Effects Of Transportation Hazards On High Barrier Flexible Packaging Films, Kyle Dunno Dec 2016

Effects Of Transportation Hazards On High Barrier Flexible Packaging Films, Kyle Dunno

Journal of Applied Packaging Research

Two flexible food packaging barrier material film structures were employed for this research study to evaluate the effects of over-the-road truck transport. The films containing different barrier materials, ethylene-vinyl alcohol (EVOH) or aluminum oxide (AlOx), were selected based on their abundant use within the flexible food packaging arena. Pouches were formed and filled with tomato paste before being thermally processed then palletized for shipment. Pouches were shipped over-the-road via truck transport a distance of 2,500 miles. After transport, the oxygen transmission rate (OTR) of the pouches located on the bottom and top layers of the palletized loads were obtained and …

Proposal Of Hybrid Damping Package Design, Qi Zhang, Katsuhiko Saito, Katsushige Nagaoka Sep 2016

Proposal Of Hybrid Damping Package Design, Qi Zhang, Katsuhiko Saito, Katsushige Nagaoka

Journal of Applied Packaging Research

To protect products from shock and vibration during transport, Cushioning Packaging Design is implemented. The cushioning performance and anti-vibration performance of a package is tested by a drop test and a vibration test. The effectiveness of the cushioning during a drop test is predictable because the cushioning material`s thickness and bearing area are determined by the cushion curves which are plotted based on the results of the tests. However, an effective package-design method which can predict the package vibration of all the static stresses that are suitable for cushioning package design has not been established yet.thus, it remains uncertain until …

Film Performance Of Poly(Lactic Acid) Blends For Packaging Applications, Carlos A. Diaz, Hsunpao Y. Pao, Sungyoung Kim

Journal of Applied Packaging Research

Poly(lactic acid) (PLA), a biodegradable thermoplastic derived from renewable resources, stands out as a substitute to petroleum-based plastics. PLA based films for food packaging has been an area of both commercial and research interest within the context of sustainability. In spite of its high strength, packaging applications have been limited because PLA is more brittle than traditional oil-based plastics. Because of this, films display low tear and impact resistance and produce a loud crackling sound when manipulated. Although many studies address the toughening of PLA in the bulk, little attention has been placed on the film performance. The present study …

Predicting The Effect Of Gaps Between Pallet Deckboards On The Compression Strength Of Corrugated Boxes, Matthew Baker, Laszlo Horvath, Marshall S. White Jul 2016

Predicting The Effect Of Gaps Between Pallet Deckboards On The Compression Strength Of Corrugated Boxes, Matthew Baker, Laszlo Horvath, Marshall S. White

Journal of Applied Packaging Research

The majority of corrugated boxes are transported and stored on pallets where the reduced support area due to deckboard gaps has an adverse effect on the strength of the corrugated boxes Therefore, an adjustment factor is used to adjust the box compression strength to account for the lack of support, but these factors were developed for a limited range of deckboard gaps, box sizes, and box orientations. In addition, there is no predictive model that can estimate the reduction in compression strength based on the size of the box and the size of the gap. The main objective of this …

Occurrence Of Reverse Side Effects In Corona Treatment Of Dispersion-Coated Paperboard And Its Influence On Grease Barrier Properties, Sami-Seppo Ovaska, Ringaudas Rinkunas, Tadeusz Lozovksi, Robertas Maldzius, Jonas Sidaravicius, Leena-Sisko Johansson, Monika Österberg, Kaj Backfolk

Journal of Applied Packaging Research

The uncoated side of dispersion-barrier-coated paperboards was exposed to positive and negative direct current corona treatments in order to confirm the occurrence of backside treatment and clarify its effects on the usability of the paperboard. The main component of the coating dispersions was hydroxypropylated potato starch and the effects of talc and styrene-butadiene latex additions on backside treatment were evaluated. Coatings with a high talc proportion showed excellent initial grease resistance, but corona-induced strikethroughs caused a drastic decrease in grease penetration time. The root-mean-square roughness measurements revealed moderate surface roughening at the backside, indicating thus backside treatment. The alterations in …

Fabrication Of A Mems Comb Drive Actuator, Adam Banees May 2016

Fabrication Of A Mems Comb Drive Actuator, Adam Banees

Journal of the Microelectronic Engineering Conference

Comb drives are common in many microelectromechanical systems (MEMS) applications such as gyroscopes, accelerometers and resonators in different fields such as optical communication, wireless communication, and biomedical engineering. A comb drive actuator uses electrostatic forces between the combs to create capacitive actuation. The goal of these devices was to achieve a maximum displacement of the movable combs with the lowest amount of drive voltage. Comb drive actuators were designed and then fabricated. It was found that comb fingers were not defined properly as the fingers were either too skinny or have been completely destroyed. This was due to the STS …

Process Development Challenges Associated With Gallium Nitride Materials, Eric Evangelou

Journal of the Microelectronic Engineering Conference

While attempting to fabricate low resistance Ohmic contacts to n-GaN and n-AlGaN, processing setbacks necessitated the development of new procedures within the Semiconductor and Microsystems Fabrication Lab (SMFL) at RIT. Photoresist coating recipes usable on GaN pieces were developed for OiR-620 and LOR-5A photoresists, and GaN was etched for the first time on the LAM4600 reactive ion etcher (RIE). The etch was successful, etched GaN at a rate of 187.2 Å/min, and exhibited selectivity between GaN and hard-baked photoresist comparable to an inductively coupled plasma (ICP) etch of the same chemical makeup. An Ohmic Ti to n-GaN contact was fabricated, …
