Protective Effect Of An Ice-Breaking Structure On Offshore Structures In Shallow Waters, Ji-Wu Dong, Zhi-Jun Li, Xiang-Peng Kong, Xiao-Dong Liang Aug 2019

Protective Effect Of An Ice-Breaking Structure On Offshore Structures In Shallow Waters, Ji-Wu Dong, Zhi-Jun Li, Xiang-Peng Kong, Xiao-Dong Liang

Journal of Marine Science and Technology

In this study, an ice-breaking structure (IBS) was designed to break large ice floes into small fragments through flexural failure predominantly for protecting offshore structures in shallow waters. The protective effect of the IBS on a vertical isolated cylindrical pile (ICP), which was examined through the model tests of the crushing ice loads and collision forces on the ICP from ice pieces broken with the IBS under identical conditions, was evaluated by obtaining the relative difference between the maximum values of the horizontal crushing forces and collision loads on the ICP. The results indicated a notable protective effect of the …

Experimental Study On Hydrodynamic Performance Of A New Type Of Deep Draft Multi-Column Fdpso, Jia-Yang Gu, Yu-Lin Xie, Pei Zhang, Yu Chen, Xiang-Hong Huang, Yan-Wu Tao Jun 2017

Experimental Study On Hydrodynamic Performance Of A New Type Of Deep Draft Multi-Column Fdpso, Jia-Yang Gu, Yu-Lin Xie, Pei Zhang, Yu Chen, Xiang-Hong Huang, Yan-Wu Tao

Journal of Marine Science and Technology

This paper presents an experimental study on the hydrodynamic performance of a new type of deep draft multi-column FDPSO. The operating depth of this new type FDPSO is 1500 m. The main dimension, the special variable cross-section column and the cabin arrangement of the octagonal pontoon are introduced. As taking into account the depth limit of the water basin, the 300 m water-depth equivalent truncated mooring system is adopted. The platform’s natural period and dimensionless damping coefficient were measured out by the free decay experiment. The FDPSO's motion responses in operation condition and self-survival condition are studied. At the same …

Mechanism And Model Testing Of Pipelay Vessel Roll Affected By Large Period Swells, Jia Li, Zhen-Ming Lei, Li-Qiang Sun, Shu-Wang Yan Feb 2016

Mechanism And Model Testing Of Pipelay Vessel Roll Affected By Large Period Swells, Jia Li, Zhen-Ming Lei, Li-Qiang Sun, Shu-Wang Yan

Journal of Marine Science and Technology

Pipelay vessels, such as the Hai Yang Shi You 201, have been seriously affected by large period swells in the East China Sea, where the roll amplitude is extremely large for normal pipe lay. Two conditions that can generate dramatic rolls, namely, parametric and synchronous rolling, were analyzed theoretically in this study. Model tests were also performed on the pipelay vessel Hai Yang Shi You 201 with course angles of 0, 30, 60, and 90°in swells of varying periods and wave heights to examine the aforementioned effect. The test data proved that drastic roll is not caused by parametric rolling, …

Model Tests Of Dragging Hall Anchors In Sand, Yu-Xiao Ren, Zhen-Ming Lei, Li-Qiang Sun, Shu-Wang Yan Feb 2016

Model Tests Of Dragging Hall Anchors In Sand, Yu-Xiao Ren, Zhen-Ming Lei, Li-Qiang Sun, Shu-Wang Yan

Journal of Marine Science and Technology

Hall anchors are often used as the main anchors in great medium ships. However, the methods for determining the holding capacity of Hall anchors when being pulled in soil are rarely proposed. In this study, a series of model tests was carried out using four scaled Hall anchor models to determine the kinematic behavior, trajectory, and development rules of the holding capacity of the anchors relative to dragging distances. Moreover, the holding force coefficients of the Hall anchors in sand were identified after the tests

Truncated Model Tests For Mooring Lines Of A Semi-Submersible Platform And Its Equivalent Compensated Method, Dong-Sheng Qiao, Jin-Ping Ou Apr 2014

Truncated Model Tests For Mooring Lines Of A Semi-Submersible Platform And Its Equivalent Compensated Method, Dong-Sheng Qiao, Jin-Ping Ou

Journal of Marine Science and Technology

This study conducted a model test of 1:100 model scale of a semi-submersible platform with a 1500 m full-depth mooring system in the Joint Laboratory of Wind Tunnel & Wave Flume at Harbin Institute of Technology. A truncated mooring system of 400 m water depth was designed based on the static equivalent principle. The semi-submersible platform was tested under regular wave excitation periods that ranged from 10 s to 45 s and one year of irregular wave conditions in the South China Sea. The results validated the feasibility of using numerical simulation in the motions calculation of semisubmersible platform and …
