Only two decades ago, China was a marginal player in the global aerospace industry. Today, the pace of China’s space programs is unparalleled and it has joined the sector’s leading ranks. China is the only country after the Soviet Union/Russia and the United States to independently send humans into orbit and a rover to touch down on the Moon. A Chinese station will likely soon be only the only long-term human habitat circling the Earth alongside the International Space Station. Early detection of corrosion precursor pitting and estimation of its overall dimensions directly affects the required effort and cost associated with repair and maintenance of critical aircraft structural components. The magnitude and phase of a reflected signal from a pitting are directly related to its dimensions. This paper presents a millimeter wave probe and a sizing procedure used to detect and evaluate overall pitting dimensions.

Corrosion pitting defection is a critical issue in the maintenance of aircraft. Near-field microwave nondestructive techniques have been successfully used for defection of corrosion under paint. In this paper a comparison between several different millimeter wave probes is made for the detection and evaluation of corrosion precursor pitting under paint at Ka-band and V-band. Since the pittings investigated here are very small in size, spatial resolution and sensitivity of the probes are critical issues. If is shown that modified open-ended rectangular probes namely, tapered waveguide and dielectric slab-loaded waveguide probes provide high resolution and sensitivity for the detection and evaluation …

Due to recent advances in polymers, photovoltaics, and batteries a unique type of aircraft may be feasible. This is a "solid-state" aircraft, with no conventional mechanical moving parts. Airfoil, propulsion, energy production, energy storage and control are combined in an integrated structure. The key material of this concept is an ionic polymeric-metal composite (IPMC) that provides source of control and propulsion. This material has the unique capability of deforming in an electric field and returning to its original shape when the field is removed. In this paper, adaptive critic based neural networks have been used to design a controller for a benchmark problem in aircraft autolanding. The adaptive critic control methodology comprises successive adaptations of two neural networks, namely `action' and `critic' networks until closed loop optimal control is achieved. The autolanding problem deals with longitudinal dynamics of an aircraft which is to be landed in a specified touchdown region in the presence of wind disturbances and gusts using elevator deflection as the control for glideslope and flare modes. The feasibility of training an adaptive resonance theory (ART-1) network to first cluster aircraft parts into families, and then to recall the most similar family when presented a new part has been demonstrated, ART-1 networks were used to adaptively group similar input vectors. The inputs to the network were generated directly from computer-aided designs of the parts and consist of binary vectors which represent bit maps of the features of the parts.
