Corrosion Resistance Of Enamel Coating Modified By Calcium Silicate And Sand Particle For Steel Reinforcement In Concrete, Fujian Tang

Masters Theses

"Porcelain enamel has stable chemical property in harsh environments such as high temperature, acid and alkaline, and it can also chemically react with substrate reinforcing steel resulting in improved adherence strength. In this study, the corrosion resistances of enamel coating modified by calcium silicate and sand particles, which are designed for improved bond strength with surrounding concrete, were investigated in 3.5 wt% NaCl solution. It consists of two papers that describe the results of the study.

The first paper investigates the corrosion behavior of enamel coating modified by calcium silicate applied to reinforcing steel bar in 3.5 wt% NaCl solution …

Phosphate-Doped Borosilicate Enamel Coating Used To Protect Reinforcing Steel From Corrosion, Xiaoming Cheng Jan 2014

Phosphate-Doped Borosilicate Enamel Coating Used To Protect Reinforcing Steel From Corrosion, Xiaoming Cheng

Doctoral Dissertations

"Phosphate-doped sodium borosilicate glasses were developed for enamel coatings to provide corrosion protection for reinforcing steel in concrete. Phosphates have low solubilities in borosilicate glasses, generally less than about 4 mol%, and are incorporated mainly as isolated PO43- and P2O74- anions, along with some borophosphate bonds. With the addition of P2O5, the silicate network is repolymerized and tetrahedral borates are converted to trigonal borates, because the phosphate anions scavenge sodium ions from the borosilicate network. The addition of Al2O3 significantly increases the solubility of P2O …

Development Of Third Generation Advanced High Strength Steels, Meghan C. Mcgrath Jan 2012

Development Of Third Generation Advanced High Strength Steels, Meghan C. Mcgrath

Doctoral Dissertations

"Lightweight duplex steels with combinations of either bainite, acicular ferrite, and austenite or martensite and austenite were investigated as third generation advanced high strength steels targeted for automotive applications. Large additions of manganese (>13 wt%) and carbon (

Duplex steels with different volume fractions of primary δ -ferrite were used to study the crystallography of austenite formed during the peritectic reaction. Solute profiles across the peritectic interface showed aluminum segregated near the interface which promoted bainitic ferrite formation. Thermal treatments were used to manipulate the concentration and type of oxides and the ferrite plate density was found to correlate …

Behavior Of Advanced Innovative Materials For Improved Long-Term Bridge Performance, Wei Zheng

Doctoral Dissertations

"The dissertation is to present the investigation results and comprehensive understanding of the long-term performance and behavior of innovative construction materials. The materials are applied in bridge engineering in order to either enhance the conventional materials or replace them. The dissertation consists of two major parts: structural steel coatings for corrosion mitigation and thermal behavior of concrete bridge.

In First Part, evaluation of advanced structural steel coatings was carried out through laboratory weathering tests (salt-fog resistance test and QUV weathering test), adhesion test, and electrochemical techniques. Fifteen coating systems were evaluated in this part, which covered both coating and recoating …

Web Crippling Of High Strength Cold-Formed Steel Beams, Chiravut Santaputra Jan 1986

Web Crippling Of High Strength Cold-Formed Steel Beams, Chiravut Santaputra

Doctoral Dissertations

"The structural behavior of high strength cold-formed steel beams subjected primarily to web crippling was investigated analytically and experimentally. In this study hat sections and I-beams, formed from five different types of high strength sheet steels commonly used in the automobile industry, were investigated under various loading conditions. The yield strengths of these sheet steels vary from 58 to 165 ksi.

In addition to the test data gathered in this phase of study, the experimental results obtained from the beam tests conducted at Inland Steel Company and Ford Motor Company were carefully evaluated. The evaluation indicated that the present available …

Structural Behavior Of Cold-Formed Steel Beam Webs Subjected To Partial Edge Loading, Shin-Hua Lin Jan 1984

Structural Behavior Of Cold-Formed Steel Beam Webs Subjected To Partial Edge Loading, Shin-Hua Lin

Masters Theses

"An extensive experimental investigation has been conducted to study the load-carrying capacity of cold-formed steel web elements subjected to partial edge loading which may cause web crippling or web buckling. In this experimental work emphasis was concentrated on the cold-formed steel structural members having single unreinforced webs with stiffened flanges.

In 1980, American Iron and Steel Institute (AISI) revised its "Specification for the Design of Cold-Formed Steel Structural Members.” For the design of beam webs, Section 3.5.1 of the AISI Specification provides the design criteria for web crippling. This thesis discusses the experimental work including some specimens with small length-to-depth …

Mechanical Properties Of High Strength Sheet Steels, M. Brad Parks Jan 1983

Mechanical Properties Of High Strength Sheet Steels, M. Brad Parks

Masters Theses

"In recent years fuel economy has become one of the major criteria for the design of automobiles. In order to improve the efficiency of their vehicles many automotive designers are substituting high strength sheet steels for traditional materials of lower strength. This thesis discusses experimental work which was done to determine the representative mechanical properties and stress-strain relationships of a select group of high strength sheet steels with nominal yield strengths ranging from 80 to 140 ksi. The results show that high strength sheet steels are quite anisotropic with the variation in measured properties depending on the type of sheet …

Web Crippling Strength And A Combination Of Bending And Web Crippling Of Cold-Formed Steel Beams, Nipon Hetrakul Jan 1978

Web Crippling Strength And A Combination Of Bending And Web Crippling Of Cold-Formed Steel Beams, Nipon Hetrakul

Doctoral Dissertations

"The web crippling strength of cold-formed steel beams was investigated experimentally. In this investigation, due consideration was given to the possible influence of bending moment and shear force on the web-crippling loads.

For the subject of web crippling strength, the study involved the testing of 140 built-up beams having single unreinforced webs and 152 I-beams having double webs. In addition, 66 beam tests were conducted for the case of combined bending moment, shear and web crippling.

The experimental results obtained from the beam tests conducted at the University of Missouri-Rolla and the early tests performed previously at Cornell University were …

Strength Of Cold-Formed Steel Beam Webs In Bending, Shear, And A Combination Of Bending And Shear, Roger A. Laboube Jan 1977

Strength Of Cold-Formed Steel Beam Webs In Bending, Shear, And A Combination Of Bending And Shear, Roger A. Laboube

Doctoral Dissertations

"An extensive experimental investigation has been conducted to study the load-carrying capacity of cold-formed steel web elements subjected to bending stress, shear stress, and a combination of bending and shear stresses. Emphasis has been concentrated on the instability and postbuckling strength of beam webs.

In the study of beam webs subjected only to bending, the postbuckling strength of web elements and the effect of the compression flange on the moment capacity have been carefully evaluated for beams having stiffened and unstiffened flanges. Based on 84 test results, formulas have been developed to predict the ultimate moment capacity of cold-formed steel …

Structural Behavior Of Cold-Formed Steel Members Made Of Thick Sheets And Plates, Ai-Shen Liu Jan 1974

Structural Behavior Of Cold-Formed Steel Members Made Of Thick Sheets And Plates, Ai-Shen Liu

Doctoral Dissertations

"It is well-known that the current AlSI Specification for the design of cold-formed steel structural members has been developed mainly for thin steel sections. In order to extend the applicability of the specification for the design of cold-formed steel members thicker than 1/4 in., both analytical and experimental investigations have recently been conducted with special emphases on the effects of cold work on the mechanical properties of corners and the strength of bolted connections.

For the effects of cold work, previous investigations have shown that the phenomena of strain hardening and strain aging are main factors which affect the mechanical …

The Effect Of Combined Torsional And Bending Loads On A Channel Beam With One End Restrained From Warping, David M. Schaeffer Jan 1966

The Effect Of Combined Torsional And Bending Loads On A Channel Beam With One End Restrained From Warping, David M. Schaeffer

Masters Theses

"Channel beams have been designed with the main purpose of giving large resistance to bending while the torsional strengths are known to be relatively small. In this experiment, a cantilevered channel beam was loaded with a concentrated load at the free end, first through the experimentally determined shear center and then through the centroid of the cross section. For each loading condition, the strains were measured with the aid of SR-4 strain gages placed at intervals along the length of the beam. With the aid of a computer, the strains were converted into longitudinal stresses and these stresses were compared …
