Solutions obtained are eigenvalues and eigenvectors which …

Process Optimization By Flow Sheet Simulation, Larry Dale Gaines Jan 1974

Process Optimization By Flow Sheet Simulation, Larry Dale Gaines

Doctoral Dissertations

"PROPS, (Process Optimization System), has been used to simulate and optimize the Universal Oil Products solid phosphoric acid catalyst process for producing gasoline. PROPS, a modified version of CHESS (Chemical Engineering Simulation System), performs a complete design and economic evaluation of the process for each set of independent variables. The computational time during optimization was reduced by the use of a regression equation to determine K-values as a function of temperature and pressure. K-value data used for the regression was generated from the Chao-Seader correlation using mixtures of the gasoline components to be encountered during optimization. The regression equation produces …

A Systems Approach To Evaluating The Effectiveness Of Training Programs, Jesse Michael Haverstick Jan 1974

A Systems Approach To Evaluating The Effectiveness Of Training Programs, Jesse Michael Haverstick

Masters Theses

"The evaluation of the effectiveness of training programs has long been recognized as a necessity in determining the allocation of investment. However, much of industry, today, still does not use an easily administered, systematic, and reliable method for determining training program effectiveness for their salaried (managerial) personnel. It is easily seen that determining training program effectiveness is not a one-shot, one-time event, but a continual process, whose aim, ultimately, is increased productivity. For the effectiveness of a training program to be adequately monitored, these four areas should be measured: (1) trainee attitude, (2) learning, (3) behavior change, and (4) productivity …

Determination Of Oxygen Chemical Diffusion Coefficients In Single Crystal Strontium Titanate By Capacitance Manometry, Douglas Bugh Schwarz Jan 1974

Determination Of Oxygen Chemical Diffusion Coefficients In Single Crystal Strontium Titanate By Capacitance Manometry, Douglas Bugh Schwarz

Masters Theses

"The use of the tensi-volumetric apparatus to study the non-stoichiometric behavior of strontium titanate was discussed. Oxidation kinetics of reduced single crystal strontium titanate were measured with an ultrasensitive capacitance manometer as the sample absorbed oxygen in response to a changing oxygen activity.

The oxidation kinetics were found to fit a solution to Fick's second law for rectangularly shaped samples....

The procedure selected for measurement of the oxidation kinetics, and the method of obtaining diffusion coefficients from the oxidation data was discussed along with potential sources of error of the system"--Abstract, page ii.

A Digital Simulation Of The Statistical Properties Of Ionospheric Scintillation, William Frederick Deckelman Jan 1974

A Digital Simulation Of The Statistical Properties Of Ionospheric Scintillation, William Frederick Deckelman

Masters Theses

"This thesis shows that a bandlimited bivariate-normal time series is a useful model for the envelope of scintillating radio signals traversing the ionosphere. A software computer model is designed and its parameters varied to obtain good fits of the fade duration distribution of the time series generated by the model with that of an actual block of ionospheric scintillation data. The power spectrum of the actual time series corresponding to the in-phase and phase quadrature components of ionospheric scintillation is shown to lie between that of a first- and second-order Butterworth filter through comparison with model generated data"--Abstract, page ii.

The Effects Of Washout In Polydispersed Metalic Aerosols, Jerry N. Burford Jan 1974

The Effects Of Washout In Polydispersed Metalic Aerosols, Jerry N. Burford

Masters Theses

"Experimental Collection Efficiencies are presented for drops of approximately 0.1cm radius falling through aluminium, magnesium and molybdenum oxide polydispersed aerosols. The experimentation was conducted in two identical cylindrical chambers, one being used for aerosol washout, and the other for allowing the aerosol to decay normally. The Collection Efficiency data were thus determined by comparing the aerosol concentration changes in the two chambers. The rather strong effects that induced micro-turbulence and relative humidity have on aerosol collection and aerosol decay were observed and are discussed"--Abstract, page ii.

The digital recording interface described in this paper is designed to permit replacement of the strip chart recorder with an audio tape recorder. The interface will allow simultaneous recording of two analog channels which may be reproduced as …

Combined Forced And Free Convection On A Vertical Cylinder And Flat Plate, Aleksandros Mucoglu Jan 1974

Combined Forced And Free Convection On A Vertical Cylinder And Flat Plate, Aleksandros Mucoglu

Masters Theses

"In the study of fluid flow over heated surfaces, it is customary to neglect the effects of buoyancy force when the flow is horizontal. However, such a practice is not justified when the forced flow is along an inclined or a vertical surface, because under these conditions the buoyancy force modifies considerably the flow field and hence the heat transfer rate from the surface. Such a flow is termed combined forced and free convective flow.

The present study is concerned with the effects of buoyancy force on forced convection along an isothermal vertical cylinder and a flat plate. This type …

Study Of The Return-On-Investment Surface Of A Small Chemical Plant, Jose Antonio Casas Martinez-Ortiz Jan 1974

Study Of The Return-On-Investment Surface Of A Small Chemical Plant, Jose Antonio Casas Martinez-Ortiz

Masters Theses

"A study of the return-on-investment (ROI) surfaces for a single reactor chemical plant (Westbrook (8)) with a discontinuous investment function confirms its unimodality in the valid region. In both cases studied, the return-on-investment surfaces rise smoothly to the adiabatic boundary from a singular flow rate below which two of the component flow are not physically realizable. The optimum is located on the adiabatic boundary.

Comparison with these surfaces shows that using linear regression to obtain the parameters for an algebraic simulation of investment does not yield ROI values acceptably near the optimal. However, an heuristic approach, which assumes that minimizing …

Transformer Connection Study For 138 Kv To 12.47 Kv Substations Of The Union Electric Company St. Louis, Missouri, John Glenn Walsh Jan 1974

Transformer Connection Study For 138 Kv To 12.47 Kv Substations Of The Union Electric Company St. Louis, Missouri, John Glenn Walsh

Masters Theses

"This thesis examines the transformer connections that can be used in the new 138-12.47 kV substations on the Union Electric power system. The object is to determine if a zero phase shift transformer without a delta connected tertiary winding can be used and economically justified. Traditionally a delta winding has been automatically included for this application without taking engineering time and effort to study all ramifications including possible dollar savings available with other connections. Three transformer manufacturers supplied technical and cost data which are analyzed, based on Union Electric system conditions. Consideration of relaying, harmonics and unbalanced loading shows that …

Methods for the calculation of space charge due to ionization on the water drop has been suggested"--Abstract, page …

Laboratory Evaluation Of Dynamic Soil Properties By Ultrasonic Testing Methods, Ronald Maurice Eckelkamp Jan 1974

Laboratory Evaluation Of Dynamic Soil Properties By Ultrasonic Testing Methods, Ronald Maurice Eckelkamp

Masters Theses

"Measurement of ultrasonic compression and shear wave velocities through a soil material has been made with a pulse wave generator developed at the University of Missouri-Rolla. The variation of these velocities along with the behavior of the dynamic material parameters of the material (Young's modulus, shear modulus, Poisson's ratio) with void ratio and degree of saturation were determined. Compression wave velocity, shear wave velocity, Young's modulus and shear modulus were found to decrease with increasing void ratio; degree of saturation was of little influence. Wave attenuation could not be measured by the test procedure used"--Abstract, page ii.

Parameter Identification Of Nonuniform Distributed Rc Networks, Roger Allen Hayes Jan 1974

Parameter Identification Of Nonuniform Distributed Rc Networks, Roger Allen Hayes

Doctoral Dissertations

"The problem of the unique parameter identification of nonuniform distributed RC networks is addressed in this dissertation. Previous literature provides for the equivalence of distributed networks with respect to the terminal characteristics. Therefore, the question is whether unique parameter identification is even possible. This work settles that question by presenting the sufficient conditions to insure a unique solution to the parameter identification problem. One theorem requires the knowledge of a driving-point impedance, the knowledge of the physical length, and the constraint that the r(x)c(x) product remains constant to insure uniqueness of the parameters r(x) and c(x). Relaxation of the r(x)c(x) …

State-Space Analysis And Synthesis Of Active Rlc Networks, Wen-Pao Lee Jan 1974

State-Space Analysis And Synthesis Of Active Rlc Networks, Wen-Pao Lee

Doctoral Dissertations

"This dissertation provides theoretical foundations for the state-space analysis and synthesis of linear active RLC networks containing all four types of controlled sources. The analysis portion is concerned with an explicit representation of the state model and the order of complexity of a general linear active RLC network. The problem considered in the synthesis portion is the realization of a given A-matrix with an active nondegenerate RLC-ladder network or an active RLC network without any particular structure.

The general active RLC network state model representations are explicitly expressed in terms of the fundamental circuit submatrices, the network element submatrices, and …

Structural Behavior Of Cold-Formed Steel Members Made Of Thick Sheets And Plates, Ai-Shen Liu Jan 1974

Structural Behavior Of Cold-Formed Steel Members Made Of Thick Sheets And Plates, Ai-Shen Liu

Doctoral Dissertations

"It is well-known that the current AlSI Specification for the design of cold-formed steel structural members has been developed mainly for thin steel sections. In order to extend the applicability of the specification for the design of cold-formed steel members thicker than 1/4 in., both analytical and experimental investigations have recently been conducted with special emphases on the effects of cold work on the mechanical properties of corners and the strength of bolted connections.

For the effects of cold work, previous investigations have shown that the phenomena of strain hardening and strain aging are main factors which affect the mechanical …

The Effect Of Contact Angle, Surface Roughness, And Adsorption Of Heterogeneous Nucleation Of Condensing Water, Prafulla Chandra Mahata Jan 1974

The Effect Of Contact Angle, Surface Roughness, And Adsorption Of Heterogeneous Nucleation Of Condensing Water, Prafulla Chandra Mahata

Doctoral Dissertations

"Condensation of water vapor on various surfaces was studied experimentally. It was found that supersaturations as high as 25% were required to initiate condensation on hydrophobic surfaces. The supersaturation data agreed qualitatively with the Volmer theory of heterogeneous nucleation. The influence of adsorption of water vapor was found to be small. Surface roughness caused a little reduction in the critical supersaturation"--Abstract, page iii.
