Design And Test Of An Apparatus For Rate Measurements Of Rapid Gas Reactions, Erich Rolaff Jan 1950

Design And Test Of An Apparatus For Rate Measurements Of Rapid Gas Reactions, Erich Rolaff

Masters Theses

"The present study on rapid gas reactions was initiated with two main goals in view. The first objective was the development of equipment and methods for the treatment of problems arising in extremely rapid gas phase reactions. In recent years, with the advent of large scale applications of gas turbines and rocket motors, the process of high speed gas reactions, especially those of combustion and oxidation have become of increasing importance...The second main goal of the work was to apply the methods and equipment developed to the investigation of chemical systems of interest"--Introduction, page 1-2.

Separation Of Copper And Zinc On Synthetic Resins, Ernest Joseph Breton Jan 1950

Separation Of Copper And Zinc On Synthetic Resins, Ernest Joseph Breton

Masters Theses

"It was desired to know whether ion exchange resins could be of value to the metallurgist in the recovery and separation of metals. The recovery and separation of copper and zinc from dilute solutions on Amberlite IRC-50, a carboxylic resin, and Amberlite IR-120, a nuclear sulfonic resin, were investigated. It was found that Amberlite IRC-50 could effectively remove copper ions from a solution of copper and zinc. Amberlite IR-120, due to the strong sulfonic acid groups, exhibited only a slight preference for copper as compared to zinc. It would seem that a judicious choice of resins coupled with appropriate chemistry …

A Study Of Mine Scraper Efficiency On Materials Of Different Specific Gravities, Kermit Guy Rowley Jan 1950

A Study Of Mine Scraper Efficiency On Materials Of Different Specific Gravities, Kermit Guy Rowley

Masters Theses

"The purpose of this study is to determine the effect that the specific gravity of the material scraped has on the power consumption and the efficiency of the common types of mine scrapers. As scraper weight, rope speed, and moisture content of the muck are important factors affecting the power consumption and efficiency, these variables are the ones considered for each type scraper. Two materials of different specific gravities are used in the study with an equal number of tests run on each material"--Introduction, Purpose of Problem, page 2.

The Theory Of Limit Design As Applied To Column Analysis, John Francis Mccarthy Jan 1950

The Theory Of Limit Design As Applied To Column Analysis, John Francis Mccarthy

Masters Theses

"In any discussion of compression members of a structure, account has to be taken primarily of the relative "slenderness" or bending weakness of the member. If the member be so short that axial loading causes very slight deflection at any point throughout the member, it is usually designated a simple compression member and no account is taken of the additional stresses due to the deflection. When, however, the ratio of the length to the least radius of gyration of the member becomes so large that bending stresses cannot be ignored, the member is usually called a column and its consequent …

Solid Solution In The Series Sodium Tungsten Bronze, Lithium Tungsten Bronze And Tungstic Oxide, Godrej F. Doctor Jan 1950

Solid Solution In The Series Sodium Tungsten Bronze, Lithium Tungsten Bronze And Tungstic Oxide, Godrej F. Doctor

Masters Theses

"The tungsten bronzes are a series of anionic substitutional solid solutions of alkali metal metatungstates and tungstic oxide. They are neither alloys nor intermetallic compounds, the term tungsten bronzes was adopted because of their remarkable metallic properties, e.g. luster, specific gravity and especially high electrical conductivity, which resembles to that of graphite. Due to its chemical inactivity and beautiful shades of color, it is used as a coating, especially in the plastic industry and for other ornamental products. The properties and the structure of these bronzes have not been investigated entirely satisfactory; within the last twenty years, only a few …

Calculations Of Maximum Sag Of A Transmission Line With An Ice Load On One Span, Rodney A. Schaefer Jan 1950

Calculations Of Maximum Sag Of A Transmission Line With An Ice Load On One Span, Rodney A. Schaefer

Masters Theses

"An important problem concerning electric power lines is the calculation of the maximum sag occurring when there is an ice load on only one span. The object of this thesis is to determine a practical method for calculating the maximum sag of a transmission line, suspended on suspension insulators, with the aforementioned loading conditions. This paper is limited to the case where the supports of the transmission line are at equal elevations and all span lengths are equal"--Introduction, page 1.

Effects Of A Reverse Order Of Firing Using Millisecond Delay Electric Blasting Caps In A Quarry Operation, Reginald John Jones Jan 1950

Effects Of A Reverse Order Of Firing Using Millisecond Delay Electric Blasting Caps In A Quarry Operation, Reginald John Jones

Masters Theses

"Evidence of the steady increase in the production of quarries is a reflection of the improved blasting practices that are being used. New explosives, the new millisecond electrical blasting caps and the endless experimentation carried on by both manufacturer and operator continue to aid or better the old methods of quarry blasting. In many instances the better results were obtained from practices hitherto unknown or at least unused. This report describes the results obtained from comparing quarry rounds shot in the accepted firing order and those shot in the reverse order of firing. The purpose of the report is to …

Analytical Investigation Of Bending Effects On The Stability Of A Tube Subjected To External Pressure, Charles Young Jan 1950

Analytical Investigation Of Bending Effects On The Stability Of A Tube Subjected To External Pressure, Charles Young

Masters Theses

"The behavior of thin and moderately thick-walled tubes under various types of loadings has been a major problem of several leading industries for many years. Predominant among these, and the one for which this thesis was primarily undertaken, is the oil industry. The problem attacked in this thesis, however, is not limited to that industry alone, having ample application in industries that are sub-marine in nature, or any industry in which the application of external pressures on equipment is likely to be responsible for buckling failures...In this thesis, the problem of finding the effect of bending on the collapsing pressure …

Velocity Studies In A Vertical Pipe Flowing Full, Robert Franklin Tindall Jan 1950

Velocity Studies In A Vertical Pipe Flowing Full, Robert Franklin Tindall

Masters Theses

"The purpose of this investigation is to install a hard drawn copper pipe approximately 1/2 inch in diameter, and approximately 35 feet long in a vertical position. The copper pipe is to have pressure takeoff points at various distances along the length of the pipe. The purpose of these takeoffs is to measure the pressure of the water at the point of takeoff in the pipe. The water is to be forced into the pipe, assisted by gravity, thereby causing a pressure of some measurable quanity [sic] greater than absolute zero pressure. The discharge was to be by volumetric measurement, …

The Application Of The Relaxation Method To The Solution Of Steady-State Heat Transfer Through A Concentric Square Insulator, William Edward Simpkin

Masters Theses

"It is the object of this thesis to express the relationship between the heat transfer through a square insulator of variable inside-outside dimension ratios, in terms of a concentric round insulator of the same inside-outside diameter ration, by means of a continuous curve. Mathematically speaking, this thesis will have a plot of a variable coefficient, cs, to be used...in terms of the ratio of the width of the outside square to the width of the inside square"--Statement of Problem, page 8.

A Study Of Cast Eutectic Structures By Means Of Optical And X-Ray Microscopy, John Stanton Winston Jan 1950

A Study Of Cast Eutectic Structures By Means Of Optical And X-Ray Microscopy, John Stanton Winston

Masters Theses

"The present research is the result of interest in two rather broad, and at first thought, seemingly entirely separate topics: the structure of eutectics and x-ray microscopy. D. Hanson in 1923 in his correspondence with Albert M. Portevin in regard to his article on the structure of eutectics states, "A point that always stuck him (D. Hanson) in examining eutectics was that one of the constituents always formed a continuous phase round the other one. The orientation of one constituent was either constant or varied in a uniform manner. What, however, was the condition of the 'enveloped' constituent, which formed …

An Experimental Study Of Crystallization In Opal Glass, William C. Rous Jan 1950

An Experimental Study Of Crystallization In Opal Glass, William C. Rous

Masters Theses

"Opal glasses are well known from use in such forms as ointment jars, lighting globes, wall panelling [sic], and decorative effects in glass vases. Cryolite, fluorspar, and sodium fluosilicate are used in varying proportions in most glasses of this type. Since little is known of the mechanism of crystallization in opal glass, there is a definite need of gathering further information on this subject. This information is of particular interest to the manufacturers whose products consist of this type of glass. Further information would aid in control of the characteristics desired and perhaps would allow a more economical control"--Introduction, page …

A Comprehensive Traffic Survey Of Phelps County, Missouri, Clifford D. Muir

Masters Theses

"The purpose of this study is two fold. The first of these purposes is to serve as a pattern or guide for any county or township wishing to conduct a comprehensive traffic survey. The second purpose of this study is to provide traffic classification and other data on a typical county system of rural roads. Today, many counties in the United States are faced with the problem of inadequate roads, due to the modernization of the American farm. While they realize this problem exists, may county governments have developed no organized method of studying and determining their needs...When the author …

Effects Of Wave Action Upon The Design Of The Breakwater For Istanbul Harbor, Melih Suat Durusan Jan 1950

Effects Of Wave Action Upon The Design Of The Breakwater For Istanbul Harbor, Melih Suat Durusan

Masters Theses

"The city of Istanbul is situated on the southern entrance of the Bosphorus which separates Asia from Europe; at the same time it is the only strait that leads to the Black Sea. Istanbul is the city that connects Europe-Asia highways and railways. These features show that Istanbul is a very important port. The Golden Horn and the southern end of the Bosphorus constitute a natural harbor which has been in use for many years. Although the natural harbor has served its purpose in the past, the present conditions necessitate the presence of a new harbor...One economical method of improving …

Grouting And Freezing Unconsolidated And Water-Bearing Strata, Robert Walter Heins Jan 1950

Grouting And Freezing Unconsolidated And Water-Bearing Strata, Robert Walter Heins

Masters Theses

"The process of grouting has undergone many changes in recent years. A definition must, therefore, be inclusive. "Grouting" is the process of injecting, under pressure, into soil and rock through boreholes or other openings, any solution or suspension containing materials that harden, stiffen, or swell in void spaces to produce a solid or semi-solid impermeable mass. Various cements, chemicals, asphalts and clays are the materials used in the grouting process. The use of tailings is also considered a type of grouting, since some hardening or stiffening takes place. Cement grout relies on chemical reaction to bring about setting or hardening …

The Transformation Of The Aluminum-Zinc Eutectoid Alloy At Subcritical Temperatures, Thomas Joseph Burke Jan 1950

The Transformation Of The Aluminum-Zinc Eutectoid Alloy At Subcritical Temperatures, Thomas Joseph Burke

Masters Theses

"Interest in the mechanism of the austenite eutectoid transformation in iron-carbon alloys, especially as produced by the isothermal sub-critical techniques introduced by Davenport and Bain, has resulted in the application of similar heat treatment studies to the eutectoid transformations in other alloy systems. The study of the eutectoid transformation is of both fundamental and industrial interest because past experience has shown that these studies yielded much information concerning the nature and mechanism of the changes in eutectoid alloys during the decomposition of the phase stable at high temperatures and has also contributed much toward the development of new properties to …

Safety And Health In Mining, John Philip Lacke Jan 1950

Safety And Health In Mining, John Philip Lacke

Masters Theses

"The mining industry has long been criticised severely because of its high rate of accident occurrence. Statistics, which, however, are not strictly comparable show that the accident-frequency rate in all mining is currently about three times and the accident severity rate is about seven times as great as the average for general industrial work in the United States. Figures such as these are by no means comforting to mining men. They constitute a challenge to the industry that cannot be ignored.

It must be remembered that any type of mining is more hazardous than most or the other major occupations. …

The Temperature Within A Homogeneous Plate Of Finite Thickness, Charles R. Remington Jan 1950

The Temperature Within A Homogeneous Plate Of Finite Thickness, Charles R. Remington

Masters Theses

"The object of this thesis is to determine by an analytical method the temperature within a homogeneous plate of finite thickness subjected to a constant temperature on one side and a periodic fluctuating temperature, expressible in a Fourier series, on the opposite side. This problem in periodic temperature changes has not, to the author's knowledge, been solved previously. The flow of heat in the problem is considered in only one direction, the x-direction. Flow in the other two directions is considered negligible, or zero. Periodic temperature changes in the earth are of importance. The temperature changes have been used by …

Flood Control With Retarding Basin Type Reservoirs In Meramec Basin, Missouri, Ilhan Kaya Ozbilen Jan 1950

Flood Control With Retarding Basin Type Reservoirs In Meramec Basin, Missouri, Ilhan Kaya Ozbilen

Masters Theses

"When rainfall occurs that provides more runoff than can be carried within the normal channels of existing streams a flood results. The excess water overflows the valley lands, invades developed areas, and causes destruction of property or, in extreme cases, loss of human life...Many structures are built to control water: Waterways of proper depth and width provide arteries of transportation; water controlled and discharged through water-wheels provides power; water may be caught in storage basins and distributed for irrigation or water supply; and water that is an actual or potential source of damage or danger to property or to human …

Temperature Fluctuations Within A Solid Of Finite Thickness, William Sanford Hogan Jan 1950

Temperature Fluctuations Within A Solid Of Finite Thickness, William Sanford Hogan

Masters Theses

"The object of this thesis is to determine by analytical methods the temperatures within a homogeneous plate of finite thickness subjected to a constant temperature on one side and a periodically fluctuating temperature on the opposite side. The heat flow in the other two directions is considered negligible in this problem. Periodic changes of temperature are frequent in nature and in engineering. The surface of the earth is heated periodically by the sun in its daily and annual cycle and the periodic temperature changes below the surface and the question to which depth these changes are appreciable were dealt with …

The Effect Of Calcium Chloride On Air-Entrained Concrete, Gerard Francis Hofstaedter Jan 1950

The Effect Of Calcium Chloride On Air-Entrained Concrete, Gerard Francis Hofstaedter

Masters Theses

"The essence of the problem is not fully set forth in the title in that all aspects are not covered. In this case, the term "effect" means how the compressive strength and the modulus of elasticity vary with the addition of calcium chloride...Many pages will be found concerning the relative merits of plain concrete versus air-entrained concrete. All phases of the problem have been covered thoroughly. Investigations have been conducted on both plain and air-entrained concrete to determine the compressive strength, flexural strength, durability and workability"--Introduction, page 1.

Separation Of Cobalt From Zinc Sulfate Solutions By Synthetic Cation Exchange Resins, Wen-Hsiang Chang Jan 1950

Separation Of Cobalt From Zinc Sulfate Solutions By Synthetic Cation Exchange Resins, Wen-Hsiang Chang

Masters Theses

"The purpose of the present research is primarily to investigate the possibility of the separation and recovery of cobalt from zinc sulfate solutions by means of cation exchange resins. It is thought that such an investigation, seemingly of academic interest, might throw some light on determining the possibility of processing some industrial solutions containing both cobalt and zinc. Cobalt, for instance, has been well known as one of the most detrimental impurities in zinc electrolytic solutions. In spite of various purification treatments, small amounts of cobalt are often present in the electrolytic solution, causing a reduction in current efficiency and …

A Determination Of The Economic Feasibility Of Producing Marginal Gas Wells, Horace Tharp Mann Jan 1950

A Determination Of The Economic Feasibility Of Producing Marginal Gas Wells, Horace Tharp Mann

Masters Theses

"The purpose of this investigation is to show that it is economically feasible to produce marginal gas wells in such a manner that all the gas from the edge of the field will be captured by the first row of wells. In this problem the permeability of the sand is to be variable but known, and the effects of this variable permeability on the pressure distribution, and resulting gas production, will be discussed.

In many gas fields the point at which it is generally considered unprofitable to drill new wells is well inside the boundary of the reservoir. This is …

The Freezing Temperatures Of The System Aniline-Ortho Toluidine, Ray W. Fahien Jan 1950

The Freezing Temperatures Of The System Aniline-Ortho Toluidine, Ray W. Fahien

Masters Theses

"The purpose of this investigation was to determine the freezing temperatures of the system aniline-ortho toluidine and to speculate on the theoretical significance of these results. The properties of this system are of considerable practical engineering interest since the system falls in a class of low-freezing organic mixtures which may have value as fuels for jet propulsion devices required to operate at extreme altitudes or in Arctic regions. Since nitric acid has been found to be a very effective and convenient oxidizer, the search for a suitable fuel to be used in combination led to aniline as having the most …

The Economic Spacing Of Contraction Joints In Reinforced Concrete Pavements, Wilbert Frederick Wegener Jan 1950

The Economic Spacing Of Contraction Joints In Reinforced Concrete Pavements, Wilbert Frederick Wegener

Masters Theses

"Structurally, there are two types of joints used in concrete pavements: (a) the tied, or permanently-closed joint; and (b) the open or free type of joint. The permanently closed joint utilized tie-steel of some form to keep the joint from opening. Usually, this steel is in the form of short individual bars extending across the joint and bonded to both slabs (designated as "tie-bars") or in the form of distributed reinforcement. The remaining method of classification, that of refering [sic] to the joint purpose, gives the expansion joint, contraction joint, and warping joint. An expansion joint is, as the name …

Principles And Practices Controlling The Use Of Earthmoving Equipment, Woodrow John Latvala

Masters Theses

"The purpose of this study is to show how the efficiency in earthmoving projects can be increased by the application of engineering principles. Efficiency can be increased by choosing equipment to fit the given set of conditions; and, having chosen the equipment, operate it at its maximum efficiency. In order to choose the right equipment it is necessary to study the conditions under which the equipment must operate. It is then necessary to study the machine in order to ascertain its adaptability to the existing conditions"--Introduction, page 1.
