Cable Analysis For Electromagnetic Compatibility Issues, Guanghua Li Jan 2016

Cable Analysis For Electromagnetic Compatibility Issues, Guanghua Li

Doctoral Dissertations

"This dissertation consists of three papers. In the first paper, a high-sensitivity resonant electric field probe was designed, consisting of an LC resonator loaded by quarter-wave transformers. At the resonant frequency of 1.577 GHz, the measured |S21| from a matched trace to the resonant probe was approximately 6.6 dB higher than that of an equivalently sized broadband probe.

In the second paper, a method for creating a simple SPICE model is proposed such that the SPICE model allows prediction of radiated emissions in component level tests. The radiation from the ground connections between the cables and return plane …

Integrated Geophysical Approach Using Electrical Resistivity Tomography And Multichannel Analysis Of Surface Wave In Assessing Wilson Spring Development, Ibrahim E. Ahmed

Doctoral Dissertations

"This research investigated fractured zones leading to preferential flow paths of Wilson Spring. In this context, electrical resistivity tomography (ERT) data and multi-channel analyses of surface waves (MASW) data were acquired at studied site with the purpose of mapping a variable depth to top of bedrock and geological structures.

Interpretation of the boreholes, MASW, and ERT data indicated that a depth to top of rock does vary significantly at the studied site due to many solution-widened fractures. Multiple near-vertical solution-widened fractures were mapped in the studied site based on the interpretation of the ERT data. The mapped solution-widened fractures appear …

Proactive Strategies In Personal Dose Monitoring, Prevention And Mitigation, Manish Kumar Sharma Jan 2016

Proactive Strategies In Personal Dose Monitoring, Prevention And Mitigation, Manish Kumar Sharma

Doctoral Dissertations

"At certain threshold, nuclear radiation (like x-rays and gamma-rays) may adversely impact the health of living tissues. The exposure to these radiations in nuclear facilities is measured by devices called dosimeters. The devices are generally worn on the torso and are monitored by health physics division to report the radiation dose received by the personnel. However, this approach is not proactive--since the dosimeters reflect the dose that has already been absorbed in the body of the wearer.

This work presents a scheme to proactively avoid large dose acquisition at radiation-prone facilities. The work was divided into three major segments: (i) …

Efficient Time-Dependent System Reliability Analysis, Zhifu Zhu Jan 2016

Efficient Time-Dependent System Reliability Analysis, Zhifu Zhu

Doctoral Dissertations

"Engineering systems are usually subjected to time-variant loads and operate under time-dependent uncertainty; system performances are therefore time-dependent. Accurate and efficient estimate of system reliability is crucial for decision makings on system design, lifetime cost estimate, maintenance strategy, etc. Although significant progresses have been made in time-independent reliability analysis for components and systems, time-dependent system reliability methodologies are still limited. This dissertation is motivated by the need of accurate and effective reliability prediction for engineering systems under time-dependent uncertainty. Based on the classic First and Second Order Reliability Method (FORM and SORM), a system reliability method is developed for multidisciplinary …

Bayesian Inference For Dynamic Pose Estimation Using Directional Statistics, Jacob E. Darling Jan 2016

Bayesian Inference For Dynamic Pose Estimation Using Directional Statistics, Jacob E. Darling

Doctoral Dissertations

"The dynamic pose of an object, where the object can represent a spacecraft, aircraft, or mobile robot, among other possibilities, is defined to be the position, velocity, attitude, and angular velocity of the object. A new method to perform dynamic pose estimation is developed that leverages directional statistics and operates under the Bayesian estimation framework, as opposed to the minimum mean square error (MMSE) framework that conventional methods employ. No small attitude uncertainty assumption is necessary using this method, and, therefore, a more accurate estimate of the state can be obtained when the attitude uncertainty is large.

Two new state …

Characterization Of An Integrated Circuit With Respect To Electrostatic Discharge-Induced Soft Failures, Benjamin J. Orr Jan 2016

Characterization Of An Integrated Circuit With Respect To Electrostatic Discharge-Induced Soft Failures, Benjamin J. Orr

Doctoral Dissertations

"This research proposal presents a methodology whereby an integrated circuit (IC) can be characterized with respect to soft-failures induced by Electrostatic Discharge (ESD)-like events. This methodology uses an exclusively "black-box" approach to determine the response of an IC in a system-level environment, thereby allowing it to be implemented without intimate knowledge of the DUT IC. Results from this methodology can be referenced during system design to raise awareness of specific vulnerabilities of the core system ICs.

During work on this methodology, several sub topics have been explored and developed in the field of system-level ESD. Sections 2 and 3 introduce …

Approximation For Single-Channel Multi-Server Queues And Queuing Networks With Generally Distributed Inter-Arrival And Service Times, Carlos Roberto Chaves Jan 2016

Approximation For Single-Channel Multi-Server Queues And Queuing Networks With Generally Distributed Inter-Arrival And Service Times, Carlos Roberto Chaves

Doctoral Dissertations

"This dissertation is divided into two papers. The first paper is related to developing a closed-form approximation for single-channel multiple-server queues with generally distributed inter-arrival and service times, which are often found in numerous settings, e.g., airports and manufacturing systems. Unfortunately, exact models for such systems require distributions for the underlying random variables. Further, data for fitting distributions is sometimes not available, and one only has access to means and variances of the underlying input random variables. Under heavy traffic, excellent approximations already exist for this purpose. In the first paper, a new approximation method for medium traffic is presented. …
