Drainage And Irrigation Of A Thirty-Six Square Mile Tract Of Land In Louisiana, Ralph Charles Dodge Jan 1928

Drainage And Irrigation Of A Thirty-Six Square Mile Tract Of Land In Louisiana, Ralph Charles Dodge

Bachelors Theses

"Because of the fact that I was unable to secure all of the necessary data concerning the topography of the section in question I made several assumptions. However, these assumptions were not made at random, as the land lies on the coast and is subject to the same conditions as does the southern portion of Jefferson County, Texas, of which I have accurate knowledge and which lies directly across Sabine Pass"--Introduction, page iv.

The Analysis Of Stresses And Design Of Multiple-Arch Dam, Guy Robert Scott Jan 1924

The Analysis Of Stresses And Design Of Multiple-Arch Dam, Guy Robert Scott

Bachelors Theses

"The so-termed: "Multiple", or "Scallop-Arched" dam, as its name implies, is one composed of a series of arches, either semi-circular or segmental in plan. These arches were first vertical but were later inclined downstream, when the engineers recognized the value of the weight of water in increasing the resisting moment. The thrust of these arches, due to the water pressure and the weight of the arch itself, is transmitted directly to the buttresses. There are numerous advantages to this type of dam over that of the gravity type"--Introduction, page 1.

Preliminary Study Of Possible Power Development On The Gasconade River, Charles Russell Barnard, Ronald Blair Wills, Harry Wesley Zieseniss Jan 1920

Preliminary Study Of Possible Power Development On The Gasconade River, Charles Russell Barnard, Ronald Blair Wills, Harry Wesley Zieseniss

Bachelors Theses

"The location of a possible dam site on the Gasconade River as a thesis proved to be a very interesting subject. Our first trip pointed out to us that we had undertaken a large task. We also realized that our subject was too big to complete thouroughly sic in the time alloted. Due to this circumstance we tried to cover the essential facts and to eliminate as much of the detail work as possible. For instance, we made no attempt to make a complete survey of the basin, instead, we ran surveys for some distance up the river to give …

Simple Methods And Tables For Determining True Meridian, Howard Jones Teas Jan 1917

Simple Methods And Tables For Determining True Meridian, Howard Jones Teas

Bachelors Theses

"The ordinary methods of determining the true meridian by observation on either Polaris or the sun are so tedious to calculate that most surveyors and students dread making them. Observation on Polaris at either elongation or clumination sic require less calculation and are much simpler, but this simplicity is offset by the fact that they must be taken at an exact instant. If a cloud crosses the sky at the time, the surveyor has to wait until the next night. then again the observer must know the date, exact longitude and latitude and correct time for making the observation, and …

An Investigation Of Blended Cements, Byron Lee Ashdown Jan 1916

An Investigation Of Blended Cements, Byron Lee Ashdown

Bachelors Theses

"It is generally accepted to be a fact that the coarser particles of a cement are practically inert, and that it is only the finest particles that possess the cementing qualities. Exactly what percentage of the whole is active, or possesses the cementing properties, is not known. Since but few experiments pertaining to such have been performed there is consequently little data to be found"--Introduction, page 3.

A Study For Comparative Costs Of Flat, Short Span, Concrete Steel Highway Bridges, Thomas Purcell Mccague Jan 1916

A Study For Comparative Costs Of Flat, Short Span, Concrete Steel Highway Bridges, Thomas Purcell Mccague

Bachelors Theses

"The importance of steel in the construction of long span highway bridges is well understood, but it's cost and the constant heavy maintenance charges, or it's rapid deterioration, if not properly maintained, have caused builders of bridges to seek some other material, which is low is first cost and which will not require constant painting. Se we consider concrete and concrete steel"--page 2.

An Investigation In Concrete, Don H. Morgan

Bachelors Theses

"It is the purpose of this investigation to determine the effect of blending a portland cement with a fine silica sand. A blended cement such as this has been used successfully and economically in several important works. The United States Reclamation Service and the Los Angeles Aqueduct commission have made use of such a blended cement in several important structures. This dilution, so to say, of the cement results is a decrease in cost without a loss of strength. In this investigation it has been assured that the cement retained on a #200 sieve is inert and may be replaced …

The Design Of A Reinforced Concrete Arch Highway Bridge, Clinton Dewitt Smith Jan 1915

The Design Of A Reinforced Concrete Arch Highway Bridge, Clinton Dewitt Smith

Bachelors Theses

"The Subject of this theses is the Design of a Reinforced Concrete Arch Highway Bridge. In making the Design the crossing of South River Street, Austin Minn., was taken as the hypothetical location of the bridge and the design made with reference to the requirements of this location. These requirements are no more than those for an ordinary rural highway bridge. While in the city of Austin it is not in the route of travel to and from the depots and is hence not subjected to the loads due to heavy freighting. There is however a heavy rural traffic, this …

Structural Material Requirements In Municipal Building Codes, August Wilhelm Gleason Jan 1915

Structural Material Requirements In Municipal Building Codes, August Wilhelm Gleason

Bachelors Theses

"An examination of the various Building Codes and ordinances of American cities shows some little variation in requirements and specifications for structural Each writer or engineer, to whom has been assigned the task of preparing the several codes, has had individual theory or rule which he embodies in the work while holding in the main to the generally accepted provisions. It is for the purpose of comparing the variations in the different codes with the hope of deducing what might be considered as standard practice, that this investigation has been started"--page 4.

A Study Of The Economic Design Of Short Span Girder Type Concrete-Steel Highway Bridges, Enoch Ray Needles Jan 1914

A Study Of The Economic Design Of Short Span Girder Type Concrete-Steel Highway Bridges, Enoch Ray Needles

Bachelors Theses

"The general principles underlying the design of concrete-steel structures are quite well known. Concrete itself is a structural material which is sightly, permanent, very strong in compression, thoroughly reliable when made honestly, almost fool-proof when once allowed to "set" properly, adaptable to an almost unlimited number of uses, practically fire-proof as well as water-proof, and in addition its cost is always very reasonable. The great objection to concrete is its lack of tensile strength, and likewise its lack of elasticity and toughness. Thus it is a fortunate circumstance that which is one of the least expensive of metals, and which …
