Directional Dependent Fracture Characteristics Of 3d Printed Mechanical Metamaterials, Thomas Draper Jan 2024

Directional Dependent Fracture Characteristics Of 3d Printed Mechanical Metamaterials, Thomas Draper

Dissertations, Master's Theses and Master's Reports

Structural metamaterials, such as lattice metamaterials, are engineered cellular structures designed to achieve properties not achievable by natural materials. They enable mechanical properties unattainable by homogeneous solid materials and offer optimal properties for these materials tunable for specific applications in industries such as automotive, medical, and aerospace. Recent findings have revealed unique tunable mechanical properties such as negative Poisson's ratio, high strength-to-weight ratio, anisotropic stiffness, and much more. While the elastic and wave propogation properties of many lattice metamaterials are well investigated, the fracture properties are not well explored. However, their low fracture toughness is a bottleneck for their use …

3d Printing Of Iron Oxide Incorporated Polydimethylsiloxane Soft Magnetic Actuator, Rasoul Bayaniahangar Jan 2020

3d Printing Of Iron Oxide Incorporated Polydimethylsiloxane Soft Magnetic Actuator, Rasoul Bayaniahangar

Dissertations, Master's Theses and Master's Reports

Soft actuators have grown to be a topic of great scientific interest recently. As the fabrication of soft actuators with conventional microfabrication methods are tedious, expensive, and time consuming, employment of 3-D printing fabrication methods appears promising as they can simplify fabrication and reduce the production cost. Complex structures can be fabricated with 3-D printing such as helical coils can achieve actuation performances that otherwise would not be possible with simpler geometries. In this thesis development of soft magnetic helical coil actuators of iron-oxide embedded polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) was achieved with embedded 3-D printing techniques. Composites with three different weight ratios …

Development Of Practical Applications For Reprap Style 3-D Printers In Engineering, Benjamin T. Wittbrodt Jan 2014

Development Of Practical Applications For Reprap Style 3-D Printers In Engineering, Benjamin T. Wittbrodt

Dissertations, Master's Theses and Master's Reports - Open

The current rise in popularity of consumer level 3-D printers introduces a need to understand the application and material property capabilities of the technology. Presented here is data demonstrating the ability for the average U.S. consumer to recuperate the cost of a 3-D printer within one year of ownership. Additionally, using a consumer level 3-D printer, multiple photovoltaic (PV) racking systems were printed and produced with much lower cost compared to commercially available aluminum racking. Additionally, mechanical testing on 3-D printed components showed a temperature dependence on both percent crystallinity and ultimate tensile strength. Conclusions are drawn using the information …
