Tin tetrachloride (SnCl4 ) as a coagulant and rubber seed (Hevea brasiliensis) (RS), and polyacrylamide (PAM) as the coagulant aid were investigated in this work to treat matured and stabilised landfill leachate rich in COD and colour. A standard jar test was conducted at different pH values and dosages of coagulant/coagulant aid. When SnCl4 acted as the primary coagulant, the optimum conditions occurred at pH 8 and 10,000 mg/L dosages, with 97.3% and 81% reductions of colour and COD, respectively. Both RS and PAM were not effective when used alone. When RS was used as the coagulant aid, the dosage …

Enhancement Of Power Generation And Organic Removal In Double Anode Chamber Designed Dual-Chamber Microbial Fuel Cell (Dac-Dcmfc), Ganjar Samudro, Tsuyoshi Imai, Yung-Tse Hung Oct 2021

Enhancement Of Power Generation And Organic Removal In Double Anode Chamber Designed Dual-Chamber Microbial Fuel Cell (Dac-Dcmfc), Ganjar Samudro, Tsuyoshi Imai, Yung-Tse Hung

Civil and Environmental Engineering Faculty Publications

One of the important factors in enhancing the performance of microbial fuel cells (MFCs) is reactor design and configuration. Therefore, this study was conducted to evaluate the regressors and their operating parameters affecting the double anode chamber–designed dual-chamber microbial fuel cell (DAC-DCMFC) performance. Its primary design consists of two anode chamber compartments equipped with a separator and cathode chamber. The DAC-DCMFCs were parallelly operated over 8 days (60 days after the acclimation period). They were intermittently pump-fed with the different organic loading rates (OLRs), using chemically enriched sucrose as artificial wastewater. The applied OLRs were adjusted at low, medium, and …

Composting Processes For Food Processing Wastes: A Review, Yung-Tse Hung, Kevin P. Holloman, Howard Paul, Christopher Huhnke Jul 2021

Composting Processes For Food Processing Wastes: A Review, Yung-Tse Hung, Kevin P. Holloman, Howard Paul, Christopher Huhnke

Civil and Environmental Engineering Faculty Publications

Composting of food processing waste was analyzed as a biological process and an engineered system. The goal is to establish fundamental principles and design criteria that would aid its adoption as waste management practice. Characteristics of the inflow, reactor, and outflow were evaluated. Success of the bioreactor was found to be largely dependent on microbial community structure, physical properties of biodegradable waste (BW), aeration, heat transfer, and time required for maturation. Static piles were the primary focus of this article for cost and energy efficiency.

Utilization Of Agro-Based Adsorbents In Binary Wastewater Treatment, Abhiram Siva Prasad Pamula, Yung-Tse Hung, Howard H. Paul Jun 2021

Utilization Of Agro-Based Adsorbents In Binary Wastewater Treatment, Abhiram Siva Prasad Pamula, Yung-Tse Hung, Howard H. Paul

Civil and Environmental Engineering Faculty Publications

The application of agro-based adsorbents is growing in the tertiary stage of the wastewater treatment process during the presence of hazardous pollutants. Dye and coffee industries are among the major wastewater pollutant sources negatively affect aquatic ecosystems and human health. The current study attempts to treat a binary mixture of crystal violet (CV) and coffee wastewater using agro-based adsorbents such as peanut hull and onion peel. The performance and efficacy of low-cost adsorbents were evaluated using parameters, including transmittance and non-purgeable organic carbon (NPOC). Batch adsorption studies were conducted to optimize both the adsorbent size and dosage that affect the …

Synthetic Wastewater Treatment Using Agro-Based Adsorbents, Saisantosh Vamshi Harsha Madiraju, Yung-Tse Hung, Howard Paul May 2021

Synthetic Wastewater Treatment Using Agro-Based Adsorbents, Saisantosh Vamshi Harsha Madiraju, Yung-Tse Hung, Howard Paul

Civil and Environmental Engineering Faculty Publications

This study was undertaken to determine the treatment a binary mixture of dye wastewater (containing Naphthol Green B) and the sugar industry wastewater for removal of color. The specific treatment in the current research consists of adsorption using low-cost adsorbents and microfiltration using Whatman-41 microfilters. Considerations of this treatment process are to take the samples using batch adsorption and avoid coagulation with further dilution. Numerous runs are made, with the ideal waste samples prepared in the laboratory. As a 1st step in the study, different dye concentrations are considered using different concentrations of sugar wastewater. Samples are treated with 3 …

Pharyngeal Constriction As A Cause For Late Acquisition And Speech Sound Disorders Of Rhotic Sounds In English, Spanish, And French, Connor Mahon May 2021

Pharyngeal Constriction As A Cause For Late Acquisition And Speech Sound Disorders Of Rhotic Sounds In English, Spanish, And French, Connor Mahon

The Downtown Review

This paper attempts to explain why rhotic sounds are cross-linguistically late developing among the sound inventory of children. Included is a summary of the current literature regarding classification of rhotic sounds, an examination of the articulatory movement of the tongue root, and an overview of the clinical implications on the field of speech-language pathology. The evidence presented supports the hypothesis that pharyngeal constriction is characteristic of rhotic sounds in many languages, and that it is related to the relative late acquisition and higher rate of speech sound disorders, as seen in English, Spanish, and French.

A Model-Based Approach To Predict Neuromuscular Control Patterns That Minimize Acl Forces During Jump Landing, Dieter Heinrich, Antonie J. Van Den Bogert, Robert Csapo, Werner Nachbauer May 2021

A Model-Based Approach To Predict Neuromuscular Control Patterns That Minimize Acl Forces During Jump Landing, Dieter Heinrich, Antonie J. Van Den Bogert, Robert Csapo, Werner Nachbauer

Mechanical Engineering Faculty Publications

Jump landing is a common situation leading to knee injuries involving the anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) in sports. Although neuromuscular control is considered as a key injury risk factor, there is a lack of knowledge regarding optimum control strategies that reduce ACL forces during jump landing. In the present study, a musculoskeletal model-based computational approach
is presented that allows identifying neuromuscular control patterns that minimize ACL forces during jump landing. The approach is demonstrated for a jump landing maneuver in downhill skiing, which is one out of three main injury mechanisms in competitive skiing.

Combined Coagulation-Microfiltration Process For Dye Wastewater Treatment, Alexander Ekenatanse Eguagie, Yung-Tse Hung, Howard Hao-Che Paul Jan 2021

Combined Coagulation-Microfiltration Process For Dye Wastewater Treatment, Alexander Ekenatanse Eguagie, Yung-Tse Hung, Howard Hao-Che Paul

Civil and Environmental Engineering Faculty Publications

The performance of combined coagulation-microfiltration process for the removal of dyes in a binary mixture of dye wastewater of varied concentrations and fruit drink wastewater at three different strengths; low (10ppm), medium (50ppm) and high (100ppm) was investigated. Synthetic dye wastewater was prepared in the laboratory while fruit drink wastewater was purchased from the grocery store. Color removal efficiency was also investigated for the three coagulants; Ferric Chloride, Aluminum Sulfate and Ferrous Sulfate. Transmittance and Absorbance values were used as indices to measure the efficacy of the combined coagulation- microfiltration process.

Transmittance and absorbance values of 99.8% and 0.001 respectively …
