Development Of A Marine Biodegradable Target Balloon, Blake Samuel Robinson, Arash Sam Akhavi, David Leonardo Albarran-Martinez Jun 2021

Development Of A Marine Biodegradable Target Balloon, Blake Samuel Robinson, Arash Sam Akhavi, David Leonardo Albarran-Martinez

Materials Engineering

The US Navy utilizes PVC target balloons, known as Killer Tomatoes, that are inflated onboard a naval vessel then deployed into the ocean to calibrate a variety of weaponry. The Navy has requested the investigation of biodegradable polymers to replace the PVC in attempts to reduce ocean waste that is generated from the leftover PVC material. After communicating with American Pacific Plastic Fabricators (APPF), the current manufacturer of the Killer Tomatoes, we gained an understanding of the manufacturing process and the material requirements that would allow a new material to be integrated into their current process. Two proprietary, trial polymers …

Smart Packing With Qr - Improving Cal Poly's Parking System For All Users, Kelsey Bazshushtari, Andrew Lee, Christopher Ragasa Jun 2016

Smart Packing With Qr - Improving Cal Poly's Parking System For All Users, Kelsey Bazshushtari, Andrew Lee, Christopher Ragasa

Industrial and Manufacturing Engineering

Cal Poly Smart Parking, herein referred to as CPSP QR Code Initiative, is developed to reduce the wait times student, staff, and guest drivers experience when searching for a parking spot on campus. Cal Poly is currently undergoing a large growth in student population, and, as a result, is experiencing congestion in parking lots. Drivers will commonly spend frustrating amounts of time "vulturing" these parking lots for an open spot. CPSP QR Code Initiative consists of a database that is controlled by user submitted data through QR codes scanned on a user’s smartphone. This system will provide drivers with a …

Cal Poly Dining: The Avenue Redesign, Eric Calbonero, Derek Nollsch, Casey Reilly Jun 2015

Cal Poly Dining: The Avenue Redesign, Eric Calbonero, Derek Nollsch, Casey Reilly

Industrial and Manufacturing Engineering

Executive Summary

Campus Dining is planning to close VG’s Cafe during the 2015-2016 school year; as a result, the remaining restaurants on campus need to accommodate the additional student demand. The student team consisting of Eric Calbonero, Derek Nollsch, and Casey Reilly met with Campus Dining’s Director of Operations, Greg Yeo, about this issue—he directed the team toward a redesign of The Avenue Food Court. To redesign The Avenue, the project team focused on several key deliverables as follows:

  • Study current customer trends in The Avenue

  • Develop a proposed facilities layout and design

  • Perform a capacity analysis of The Avenue …

Cal Poly Chocolates, Jason Ferrel, Taylor Fitzpatrick Jun 2013

Cal Poly Chocolates, Jason Ferrel, Taylor Fitzpatrick

Industrial and Manufacturing Engineering

Our design for this project began with building a strong understanding of the current production process. A meeting with the manager, Anna Nakayama, provided a detailed overview of the entire process and outlined some areas of concern. In addition, she provided us with access to critical data such as standard operating procedures and inventory spreadsheets. From there, time studies were conducted for each of the 8 types of chocolate. These time studies helped identify three main issues facing Cal Poly Chocolates. The first issue is in the packaging area of production. The process is entirely manual and has become a …

Analyzing The Costs Of Different Energy Storage Systems For California Polytechnic State University, Christian Royer Jun 2013

Analyzing The Costs Of Different Energy Storage Systems For California Polytechnic State University, Christian Royer

Industrial and Manufacturing Engineering

The goal of this project was to analyze the different ways to release energy from an energy storage device into the grid to save money. This project was worked in conjunction with a Master’s of Science student. An entire year of Cal Poly’s energy usage was examined and multiple trends were observed about when the maximum amount of energy was used. These trends looked at the time of day, the day of the week, and season to see what would be the best way to release energy into the grid to save money. There were two different batteries sizes examined …

Polyparking, Christopher Blackmer, Michael Suttie Mar 2013

Polyparking, Christopher Blackmer, Michael Suttie

Biomedical Engineering

The purpose of this senior project is to analyze the various options for the implementation of a parking lot information system on the California Polytechnic State University, San Luis Obispo campus. This system would involve three main components: physical counting hardware, a database and analysis organization system, and a user interface for disseminating the gathered information. The project investigates and provides commentary on various available and commonplace systems, and the benefits and drawbacks of these systems. During the course of the project, a flexible database and user-interface was developed in Microsoft Access, which will allow counter output to be gathered …

Improving Cal Poly Space Systems Infrastructure, Tyler Richier Jun 2011

Improving Cal Poly Space Systems Infrastructure, Tyler Richier

Industrial and Manufacturing Engineering

The goal of this project was to increase the usable space for the club Cal Poly Space Systems to work on its projects, improve the safety for its members, and reduce the time it takes to manufacture its products. The project demonstrated the effectiveness of 5S in improving a workspace. Club members were measurably more comfortable in the work environment and spent less time looking for tools. Current rooms were made more professional by ridding the workplace of non-valued items and finding sensible locations for high-traffic items. Additional rooms were added and they should indisputably support club projects the upcoming …

The Analysis Of Electure Creation & Distribution Systems At Cal Poly, Jason Carian Jun 2011

The Analysis Of Electure Creation & Distribution Systems At Cal Poly, Jason Carian

Industrial and Manufacturing Engineering

This report details the analysis of potential eLecture creation and distributions for Cal Poly San Luis Obispo. Specifically, this project will focus on a system for the College of Engineering. This project was completed using the Systems Engineering process and concentrated more specifically on the Systems Evaluation phase, in which the specifics for potential system solutions are discussed. The first step was to define the problem that must be addressed; Cal Poly currently uses eLectures in the classroom, but with the wide variety of eLecture creator and distribution alternatives available, there is no optimal system at the University. The next …

Microfiche Digitization And Process Improvement For Cal Poly Senior Projects, Kyle Gaunt Jun 2011

Microfiche Digitization And Process Improvement For Cal Poly Senior Projects, Kyle Gaunt

Industrial and Manufacturing Engineering

This project addresses the need to digitize Senior Projects available on microfiche at the Cal Poly Robert E. Kennedy Library. Microfiche is an outdated document archival medium and is unfamiliar to most students, making Senior Project research inconvenient and frustrating to students. To make this process easier and more accessible to students, the University Library should consider digitizing its Senior Project collection and improving the current system in the mean time.

The Six Sigma DMAIC method was used to discover root cause problems of the current system, define performance metrics, and to develop data driven solutions for improving the current …

E-Waste Solutions For Cal Poly And The Central Coast, Andrea Schmidt Mar 2010

E-Waste Solutions For Cal Poly And The Central Coast, Andrea Schmidt

Industrial and Manufacturing Engineering

Executive Summary The focus of this paper is to explore the feasibility of an e-waste processing lab on the Cal Poly campus which can operate as an ongoing service to the community while maintaining an academic focus on the issues of end-of-life electronics. The result is a 30’ by 60’ lab on campus that includes 40 work stations, and 3,848 square feet of shelving. The lab can be entirely run by students with 36 hours per week of inspection and pre-production inventory activities and 6 hours of de-manufacturing activities, processing 264 e-waste units per month. Cal Poly students will train …
