The interactive nature of web applications or “web apps” makes them a well-suited medium for conveying complex scientific concepts to lay audiences and creating decision support tools that harness cutting edge modeling techniques and promote the work of environmental scientists and engineers. Despite this potential, the technical expertise required to develop web apps represents a formidable barrier—even for scientists and engineers who are skilled programmers. This paper describes four hurdles that contribute to this barrier and introduces an approach to overcoming these hurdles. We present an open source implementation of this approach, a development and hosting environment for environmental web …

Rural Livelihood, Biodiversity And Carbon Stock In Vietnam Mountains: Agent-Based Modeling To Anticipate Trade-Offs, Quang Bao Le Jul 2016

Rural Livelihood, Biodiversity And Carbon Stock In Vietnam Mountains: Agent-Based Modeling To Anticipate Trade-Offs, Quang Bao Le

International Congress on Environmental Modelling and Software

Assessment of future multiple ecosystem services driven by alternative land-use policies is useful for supporting decisions about what and where to invest for the best overall environmental and developmental outcomes. The task faces a great challenge due to the inherent complexity of human- landscape systems and trade-offs between rural livelihood improvement, biodiversity conservation and carbon sequestration. Agent-based system models have been recognized to be well suited to simulate the co-evolutions of the community and landscape systems in response to policy interventions. The study applies the Land Use Dynamics Simulator (LUDAS) framework to a mountain watershed in central Vietnam for anticipating …

Decision Support Tools Of European Environment Agency, Jiří Hřebíček, Stefan Jensen, Chris Steenmans Jul 2016

Decision Support Tools Of European Environment Agency, Jiří Hřebíček, Stefan Jensen, Chris Steenmans

International Congress on Environmental Modelling and Software

The European Environment Agency (EEA) is an agency of the European Union. Its task is to provide sound, independent information on the environment. EEA is a major information source for those involved in developing, adopting, implementing and evaluating environmental policy, and also the general public. Currently, the EEA has 33 member countries. The paper introduces updated decision support tools of the EEA which integrate information and communication technologies (ICT) and data management. There are discussed relevant Information and Communication Technologies (ICT), databases and sharing data with the European Copernicus programme, data centres of EEA, Eurostat and the Joint Research Centre …
