Shape Effects Of Gold Coated Silica Nanoparticles For Localized Plasmonic Resonance Based Biosensing, Russell Beckerman Jun 2019

Shape Effects Of Gold Coated Silica Nanoparticles For Localized Plasmonic Resonance Based Biosensing, Russell Beckerman

ENGS 88 Honors Thesis (AB Students)

Gold coated silica (Au@SiO2) nanoparticles are promising optical transducers for biosensors due to localized surface plasmonic resonance (LSPR) sensitivity to changes in refractive index. This study investigates the effects of shape, size, and structure on LSPR sensitivity of Au@SiO2 nanoparticles of spherical, rod, and ellipsoid geometries. Finite-difference time domain simulations in CST were used to examine these key parameters of interest and guided particle synthesis. Simulation and experiments show rod-shaped Au@SiO2 nanoparticles had maximum sensitivity of 969nm/RIU, an improvement over most particles in current literature. This study examines a method for enhanced LSPR-biosensors that leverages advances …

Compositional Optimization Of Amyloid-Graphene Oxide Nanohybrids For Biomaterials, Claire L. Drewery Jun 2019

Compositional Optimization Of Amyloid-Graphene Oxide Nanohybrids For Biomaterials, Claire L. Drewery

Materials Engineering

Amyloid nanofibrils are natural materials capable of self-assembling into precise structures with tunable functionalities, while exhibiting excellent mechanical properties. In combination with highly conductive graphene oxide (GO), the 1-D amyloid nanofibrils and 2-D nanosheets of GO can produce a robust and bio-functional nanohybrid, hypothesized to exhibit multi-domain functional properties useful for enzyme sensing, water purification, drug delivery, and tissue scaffolding applications. Here, we examine the properties of an amyloid-graphene oxide nanohybrid film made with amyloids derived from hen egg white lysozymes in an attempt to explore the diverse toolbox of amyloid derivatives and establish ideal fabrication methods and formulations of …

Optical Enhancement In Periodic Plasmonic Gratings For Sers And Metal-Semiconductor-Metal Photodetectors (Msm-Pds) Applications, Ahmad Aziz Darweesh May 2019

Optical Enhancement In Periodic Plasmonic Gratings For Sers And Metal-Semiconductor-Metal Photodetectors (Msm-Pds) Applications, Ahmad Aziz Darweesh

Graduate Theses and Dissertations

This dissertation is aimed to numerically study the effect of plasmonic grating electrodes on the efficiency of metal-semiconductor-metal photodetectors (MSM PDs) and the sensitivity of Surface Enhanced Raman Spectroscopy (SERS). This research can benefit many areas of nanoscience and optics, including plasmonic applications, such as, super lenses, nano-scale optical circuits, optical filters, surface plasmon enhanced photo-detectors solar cells, imaging sensors, charge-coupled devices (CCD), and optical-fiber communication systems. Several parameters, wire widths and thickness, gap space, taper angle, and the incident wavelength and angle, were investigated. The goal of this research is to utilize the plasmonic phenomenon by using plasmonic gratings …
