Problems of Architecture and Construction

Quite often, the foundations are combined with the walls of basements. Their reliable operation can be ensured only in the presence of thermal insulation of external structures in contact with the ground. The need for insulation is due to the fact that heat loss through the underground part of the building in some cases up to 20% of the total heat loss. In the presence of a heated basement, insulation will protect the walls of the basement from freezing, will help prevent condensation, dampness and mold development.

Model order reduction can help reduce the time and monetary constraints associated with building commissioning and significantly decrease overall building energy consumption through virtual commissioning. This research aimed to determine the effectiveness of using reduced order models to simulate the overall building energy consumption, and to estimate the energy savings from control-based commissioning recommendations.

Mass timber products, such as the glulam or cross laminated timber (CLT), are less frequently used construction materials at present for mid-rise and high-rise buildings. The feasibility and possible advantages of applying timber materials for constructing mid- and high-rise buildings are under investigation. One of the issues that needs to be addressed for the use of heavy timber materials is the safety of such constructions under seismic excitations. The purpose of this project is to develop a flood barrier that would resist flood water from entering through the doorways of a building. The goal is to mitigate extensive flooding within a structure. After the disastrous weather events that impacted American citizens late in the year of 2017, the team was inspired to develop a project to help disaster victims.
