Composite Railway Sleeper: A Cost Effective And Eco-Friendly Alternative, Wahid Ferdous, Allan Manalo, Thiru Aravinthan, Gerard Van Erp
Wahid Ferdous
High maintenance cost, huge carbon-dioxide emission from cement and steel industries and early failures of the traditional timber, concrete and steel sleepers motivated the composite sleepers as an alternative to replace those in the existing rail track. This poster presented the optimised composite railway sleeper concept and their static performance in laboratory scale. Results found that the optimised shape can reduce two-third volume of materials from the traditional rectangular shape and their behaviour is comparable with timber sleeper.

Widespread flooding with significant damage in many countries, such as the Philippines in 2013, highlights the ongoing need for effective flood risk management (FRM). This hinges on comprehensive access to and dissemination of information about the elements and the people at risk. Simulations, real-time graphs, and maps illustrate the spatial distribution of flood risks, spatial allocation and dissemination of flood effects, if flood risk reduction measures are not implemented, as well as the benefits to be derived from the effective implementation and maintenance of flood risk management measures not realized. Using precipitation, river water, and tide levels, a real-time monitoring …
Numerical Analysis Of Droplet Formation And Transport Of A Highly Viscous Liquid, Peiding Wang
Numerical Analysis Of Droplet Formation And Transport Of A Highly Viscous Liquid, Peiding Wang
Theses and Dissertations--Mechanical Engineering
Drop-on-demand (DOD) inkjet print-head has a major share of the market due to simplicity and feasibility of miniature system. The efficiency of droplet generation from DOD print-head is a result of several factors, include viscosity, surface tension, nozzle size, density, driving waveform (wave shape, frequency, and amplitude), etc. Key roles in the formation and behavior of liquid jets and drops combine three dimensionless groups: Reynolds number, Weber number and Ohnesorge number. These dimensionless groups provide some bounds to the “printability” of the liquid. Adequate understanding of these parameters is essential to improve the quality of droplets and provide guidelines for …

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A
Micro hydroforming has an ability to manufacture complex 3D micro parts at a high production rate and has drawn increasing attentions. Brief understanding of macro hydroforming, for instance, deep drawing, is necessary to understand the principle of micro hydroforming. Then, special phenomena, such as size effects, occurred at micro scale are discussed and the related theories explaining these phenomena are introduced. Based on the similarities and differences between micro and macro hydroforming, experiments and simulation which consider the size effects are reviewed.
