The Teaching/Research Nexus And Internationalisation: An Action Research Project In Radiation Physics, Susanna Guatelli, Catherine Layton, Dean Cutajar, Anatoly B. Rosenfeld

Susanna Guatelli

This paper attempts to unpack the teaching and learning experiences of academics and students when a new way of teaching radiation physics was introduced. In an attempt to articulate the University of Wollongong’s commitment to the enhancement of the teaching/research nexus and to the development of learning communities, staff of the School of Physics in the Faculty of Engineering at University of Wollongong (UOW) implemented an action research project teaching scientific computing methodologies used in radiation physics to a combined laboratory class of postgraduates and undergraduates. The design of the practical laboratory classes took account of the expected heterogeneous computing …

Simreef And Reefgame: Gaming For Integrated Reef Research And Management, Deborah Cleland, Anne Dray, Pascal Perez, Rollan Geronimo

Professor Pascal Perez

As threats to coastal and ocean systems grow in scale and complexity, the calls for new approaches to research and management grow in volume. The Modeling and Decision Support Working Group (MDSWG) of the CRTR Program has developed two participatory gaming tools that address the need for integrative approaches to coral reef management. SimReef is a regional model and role-play game aimed at policy makers and industry representatives. It simulates coastal development trajectories and trade-offs between environmental, social and economic concerns. ReefGame is a local-level model and board game that helps local people and reef managers explore interactions between livelihoods, …

A Versatile Experimental Test Rig For Gma Welding Research, Gary Dean, Dominic Cuiuri, John Norrish, Christopher David Cook Aug 2012

A Versatile Experimental Test Rig For Gma Welding Research, Gary Dean, Dominic Cuiuri, John Norrish, Christopher David Cook

Christopher Cook

Welding process research is severely hampered when adequate experimental equipment is not available. With the development of numerous welding processes and the control techniques associated with them, the need now exists for experimental equipment that offers the flexibility to control these processes and to set up parameters associated with the research. At the University of Wollongong an experimental research rig has been developed based on a digital signal processor control system that offers the researcher the facilities to study the various processes associated with GMA welding.

A Flexible Computer-Controlled Experimental Power Source For Welding Research, Dominic Cuiuri, John Norrish, Christopher David Cook

Christopher Cook

Control of the Gas Metal Arc welding process is becoming increasingly sophisticated, due to improvements in technology and a better understanding of the process itself. To effectively conduct research in this area, it is necessary to have equipment that is extremely flexible in both architecture and operation. Experimental power sources and a welding test facility have been developed at the University of Wollongong which meet these criteria. The core time-critical control functions are performed by an independent digital signal processor (DSP). Non time-critical functions such as data storage and operator interface are performed by a desktop personal computer. Both computing …

Union Advanced Educational Robot, Erik Skorina

Honors Theses

Our project was the design and construction of a medium sized (approximately 40 kg when fully loaded) mobile robot for educational and research use. This robot was designed to provide a strong baseline chassis with sensors, actuators and necessary software to allow for easy integration with existing robotic equipment, software and curricula. In particular, it was designed for use in intermediate and advanced undergraduate robotics courses and undergraduate research projects in robotics.

Fuzzy Logic For Smart Utilisation Of Storage Devices In A Typical Microgrid, Thair Mahmoud, Daryoush Habibi, Octavian Bass

Research outputs 2012

Efficient utilisation of Storage Devices (SD) among multiple sources of dispatch within a typical microgrid have a substantial impact on reducing the economic and environmental generation costs in that particular microgrid. Eventually, managing the multiple sources that supply energy simultaneously is a big engineering challenge. The complexity rises due the uncertainty of demand, generation cost, availability of renewable energy sources and (charging/discharging) time and price for the installed SD. This paper introduces a utilisation method that makes the SD more efficient in supplying the electricity within a typical medium size enterprise microgrid. The method is simply targeting the dynamic charging …

Reducing Unwarranted Variation In Healthcare Service Delivery Systems: Key Issues, Research Challenges And Potential Solutions, Nagesh Shukla, Senevi Kiridena, Nishikant Mishra

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A

There is a growing need worldwide to increase the quality and productivity of healthcare services delivery. To this end, analysing and reducing unwarranted variations in healthcare has attracted much attention in recent times. However, current modelling and simulation approaches to reduce unwarranted variations suffer from numerous limitations. Consequently, service improvement efforts have often failed to deliver expected results. This paper discusses the key issues associated with reducing unwarranted variations in hospital service delivery systems, and proposes a research framework that aims at overcoming these issues. In doing so, it highlights the need for: accurately and efficiently modelling complex service delivery …
