Label-Free Mapping Of Near-Field Transport Properties Of Micro/Nano-Fluidic Phenomena Using Surface Plasmon Resonance (Spr) Reflectance Imaging, Iltai Kim

Doctoral Dissertations

My doctoral research has focused on the development of surface plasmon resonance (SPR) reflectance imaging technique to detect near-field transport properties such as concentration, temperature, and salinity in micro/nano fluidic phenomena in label-free, real-time, and full-field manner. A label-free visualization technique based on surface plasmon resonance (SPR) reflectance sensing is presented for real-time and full-field mapping of microscale concentration and temperature fields. The key idea is that the SPR reflectance sensitivity varies with the refractive index of the near-wall region of the test mixture fluid. The Fresnel equation, based on Kretschmann’s theory, correlates the SPR reflectance with the refractive index …

An Adaptive Neuro-Fuzzy Inference System For Modeling Mechanical Properties Of Tapioca Starch-Poly(Lactic Acid) Nanocomposite Foams, Siew-Yoong Lee, Milford Hanna, David D. Jones Mar 2008

An Adaptive Neuro-Fuzzy Inference System For Modeling Mechanical Properties Of Tapioca Starch-Poly(Lactic Acid) Nanocomposite Foams, Siew-Yoong Lee, Milford Hanna, David D. Jones

Department of Agricultural and Biological Systems Engineering: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

Tapioca starch, poly(lactic acid) and Cloisite 30B nanocomposites foams, with clay contents of 1, 3, 5 and 7% (w/w), were prepared by a meltintercalation method. Multiple inputs single output models were developed to predict radial expansion ratio, unit density, bulk compressibility and spring index of the nanocomposite foams. An individual ANFIS model was developed for each mechanical property using clay content, temperature, pressure and torque as input parameters. All models preformed well with R2 values > 0.71. All models had very low root mean squared error values.

A Kinetics Study Of Selected Filtration Media For Nutrient Removal At Various Temperatures, Elizabeth Henderson Jan 2008

A Kinetics Study Of Selected Filtration Media For Nutrient Removal At Various Temperatures, Elizabeth Henderson

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

In recent years the nutrient levels of the Upper Floridan aquifer have been increasing (USGS, 2008). An example of this is found in Ocala, Florida where Silver Springs nitrate concentrations have risen from 0.5 mg/L in the 1960 s to approximately 1.0 mg/L in 2003 (Phelps, 2004). Because stormwater is a contributor to surficial and groundwater aquifer recharge, there is an increasing need for methods that decrease nitrogen and phosphorus levels. A laboratory column study was conducted to simulate a retention pond with saturated soil conditions. The objectives of the column studies reported in this thesis were to investigate the …

Performance Comparison Of Thermal Insulated Packaging Boxes, Bags And Refrigerants For Single-Parcel Shipments, S. P. Singh, Gary J. Burgess, Jay Singh Jan 2008

Performance Comparison Of Thermal Insulated Packaging Boxes, Bags And Refrigerants For Single-Parcel Shipments, S. P. Singh, Gary J. Burgess, Jay Singh

Industrial Technology and Packaging

A range of packaging solutions exists for products that must be kept within a specific temperature range throughout the supply-and-distribution chain. This report summarizes the results of studies conducted over a span of 2 years by the Consortium for Distribution Packaging at Michigan State University. Thermal insulation packaging materials such as expanded polystyrene, polyurethane, corrugated fibreboard, ThermalCor® and other composite packaging such as thermal insulating bags were studied. Phase change materials such as gel packs were also evaluated. Properties such as R-value, melting point and heat absorption were examined and are reported.

Reduction Of Superconducting Transition Temperature And Flux Pinning In Al And C Codoped Mgb2 With Insight From First-Principles Calculations, Aihua Li, Xiaolin Wang, S X. Dou, Qiwen Yao, Zhenxiang Cheng, Saeid Soltanian, J M. Yoo, P Munroe Jan 2008

Reduction Of Superconducting Transition Temperature And Flux Pinning In Al And C Codoped Mgb2 With Insight From First-Principles Calculations, Aihua Li, Xiaolin Wang, S X. Dou, Qiwen Yao, Zhenxiang Cheng, Saeid Soltanian, J M. Yoo, P Munroe

Australian Institute for Innovative Materials - Papers

We report for the first time the Al and C codoping effect on the structures and superconductivity in MgB2. It was found that both the lattice parameters and the Tc decreased monotonically with increasing doping level of both Al and C. The Tc dropped to 27.5 and 7 K for x=0.2 and for x =0.4, respectively. The reduction of Tc for the codoping was found to be quicker than for individual Al doping and slower than for individual C doping at the same doping levels. First-principles calculations indicated that the observed decrease in Tc …

A New Method Of Synthesizing Black Birnessite Nanoparticles: From Brown To Black Birnessite With Nanostructures, Marcos A. Cheney, Pradip K. Bhowmik, Shizhi Qian, Sang W. Joo, Wensheng Hou, Joseph M. Okoh Jan 2008

Okoh

Mechanical & Aerospace Engineering Faculty Publications

A new method for preparing black birnessite nanoparticles is introduced. The initial synthesis process resembles the classical McKenzie method of preparing brown birnessite except for slower cooling and closing the system from the ambient air. Subsequent process, including wet-aging at 7° C for 48 hours, overnight freezing, and lyophilization, is shown to convert the brown birnessite into black birnessite with complex nanomorphology with folded sheets and spirals. Characterization of the product is performed by X-ray diffraction (XRD), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), and N(2) adsorption ( BET) techniques. Wet-aging and lyophilization times are …

Metal-Insulator Transition And Electroresistance In Ianthanum/Calcium Manganites La1-Xcaxmn03 (X=0-0.5) From Voltage-Current-Temperature Surfaces, Jonathan C. Knott, Daniel Pond, Roger A. Lewis Jan 2008

Of the perovskites, ABX3, a subset of special interest is the family in which the A site is occupied by a lanthanide ion, the B site by a transition metal and X is oxygen, as such materials often exhibit a large change in electrical resistance in a magnetic field, a phenomenon known as "colossal" magnetoresistance (MR). Two additional phenomena in this family have also drawn attention: the metal-insulator transition (MIT) and electroresistance (ER). The MIT is revealed by measuring resistance as a function of temperature, and observing a change in the sign of the gradient. ER – the dependence of …
