Nebraska Department of Transportation: Research Reports

The use of Rejuvenating Agents (RAs), as Recycled Asphalt Pavement (RAP) modifiers, has been increasing over the past years. However, the field performance of asphalt mixtures containing high-RAP materials and modified with RAs has raised some concerns regarding the long-term performance of RAs. This study evaluated the laboratory and field performance of high-RAP mixtures with and without bio-oil RA. Three sets of plant-produced specimens were collected: 1) laboratory-compacted; 2) field-compacted and cored after paving; and 3) field-compacted and cored after one and two years. The Hamburg Wheel Tracking (HWT) test was used to evaluate the specimens' resistance to rutting and …

Milling Of Inconel 718: An Experimental And Integrated Modeling Approach For Surface Roughness, Sadaf Zahoor, Adeel Shehzad, Muhammad Salman Habib

Mechanical, Automotive & Materials Engineering Publications

Inconel 718, a hard-to-cut superalloy is reputed for having poor machining performance due to its low thermal conductivity. Consequently, the surface quality of the machined parts suffers. The surface roughness value must fall within the stringent limits to ensure the functional performance of the components used in aerospace and bioimplant applications. One doable way to enhance its machinability is the adequate dissipation of heat from the machining zone through efficient and ecofriendly cooling environment. With this perspective, an experimental and integrated green-response surface machiningbased- evolutionary optimization (G-RSM-EO) approach is presented during this investigation. The results are compared with two base-line …

Mechanical Engineering Faculty Publications

The spectral radiative heat flux could impact the material response. In order to evaluate it, a coupling scheme between KATS - MR and P1 approximation model of radiation transfer equation (RTE) is constructed and used. A Band model is developed that divides the spectral domain into small bands of unequal widths. Two verification studies are conducted: one by comparing the simulation computed by the Band model with pure conduction results and the other by comparing with similar models of RTE. The comparative results from the verification studies indicate that the Band model is computationally efficient and can be used to …

Russell, Zongtang Fang, Pete Barnes, Lan Li, Corey M. Efaw, Allison Muenzer, Jeremy May, Kailash Hamal, I. Francis Cheng, Paul H. Davis, Eric J. Dufek, Hui Xiong

Materials Science and Engineering Faculty Publications and Presentations

The presence and stability of solid electrolyte interphase (SEI) on graphitic electrodes is vital to the performance of lithium-ion batteries (LIBs). However, the formation and evolution of SEI remain the least understood area in LIBs due to its dynamic nature, complexity in chemical composition, heterogeneity in morphology, as well as lack of reliable in situ/operando techniques for accurate characterization. In addition, chemical composition and morphology of SEI are not only affected by the choice of electrolyte, but also by the nature of the electrode surface. While introduction of defects into graphitic electrodes has promoted their electrochemical properties, how such structural …

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Publications and Presentations

Molecular excitons play a foundational role in chromophore aggregates found in light-harvesting systems and offer potential applications in engineered excitonic systems. Controlled aggregation of chromophores to promote exciton delocalization has been achieved by covalently tethering chromophores to deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) scaffolds. Although many studies have documented changes in the optical properties of chromophores upon aggregation using DNA scaffolds, more limited work has investigated how structural modifications of DNA via bridged nucleotides and chromophore covalent attachment impact scaffold stability as well as the configuration and optical behavior of attached aggregates. Here we investigated the impact of two types of bridged nucleotides, …

New Evidence For Homocysteine Lowering For Management Of Treatment-Resistant Hypertension, Merrill F. Elias, Craig J. Brown Dec 2021

New Evidence For Homocysteine Lowering For Management Of Treatment-Resistant Hypertension, Merrill F. Elias, Craig J. Brown

Maine-Syracuse Longitudinal Papers

Treatment-resistant hypertension is a topic of great importance and the subject of editorial comments in the American Journal of Hypertension. Homocysteine is an intermediate compound in the vitamin regulated One Carbon Methylation pathway which affects glutathione, methionine, and nitric oxide metabolism. Elevated homocysteine, triggered by genetic mutations or insufficient body stores of active vitamins B6, B12, folate, riboflavin, indicates oxidative stress and is associated with impaired nitric oxide synthesis causing small vessel vasoconstriction in the central nervous system. High homocysteine (defined later) is also a risk factor for hypertension.

A Simulation–Optimization Framework For Post-Disaster Allocation Of Mental Health Resources, Stephen Cunningham, Steven J. Schuldt, Christopher M. Chini, Justin D. Delorit

Faculty Publications

Extreme events, such as natural or human-caused disasters, cause mental health stress in affected communities. While the severity of these outcomes varies based on socioeconomic standing, age group, and degree of exposure, disaster planners can mitigate potential stress-induced mental health outcomes by assessing the capacity and scalability of early, intermediate, and long-term treatment interventions by social workers and psychologists. However, local and state authorities are typically underfunded, understaffed, and have ongoing health and social service obligations that constrain mitigation and response activities. In this research, a resource assignment framework is developed as a coupled-state transition and linear optimization model that …

On The Synthesis Of Optimal Control Laws, Meir Pachter, Isaac E. Weintraub

Faculty Publications

In this paper we advocate for Isaacs' method for the solution of differential games to be applied to the solution of optimal control problems. To make the argument, the vehicle employed is Pontryagin's canonical optimal control example, which entails a double integrator plant. However, rather than controlling the state to the origin, we correctly require the end state to reach a terminal set that contains the origin in its interior. Indeed, in practice, it is required to control to a prescribed tolerance rather than reach a desired end state; achieving tight tolerances is expensive, and from a theoretical point of …

Electroshock Treatment Dependent Microstructural Evolution And Mechanical Properties Of Near-Β Titanium Alloy Manufactured By Directed Energy Deposition, Haojie Guo, Pu Liu, Xunpeng Qin, Yanli Song, Dongsheng Qian, Lechun Xie, Liqiang Wang, Lai-Chang Zhang, Lin Hua

Research outputs 2014 to 2021

Effects of electroshock treatment (EST) on the microstructural evolution and mechanical properties of near-β titanium alloy (Ti-55531) formed by directed energy deposition (DED) was studied in this work. With the increase in EST time, the average hardness of specimen decreased from 426 HV to 316 HV, and the fracture strain increased significantly, which was attributed to the uniform dispersion of α phase along grain boundaries and inside the β grains. After EST, the texture intensity decreased in terms of the orientation distribution function (ODF), which was ascribed to the redistribution of α phase. Moreover, more atomic vacancies and lattice distortion …

Single-Rail Adiabatic Logic For Energy-Efficient And Cpa-Resistant Cryptographic Circuit In Low-Frequency Medical Devices, Amit Degada, Himanshu Thapliyal

Electrical and Computer Engineering Graduate Research

Designing energy-efficient and secure cryptographic circuits in low-frequency medical devices are challenging due to low-energy requirements. Also, the conventional CMOS logic-based cryptographic circuits solutions in medical devices can be vulnerable to side-channel attacks (e.g. correlation power analysis (CPA)). In this article, we explored single-rail Clocked CMOS Adiabatic Logic (CCAL) to design an energy-efficient and secure cryptographic circuit for low-frequency medical devices. The performance of the CCAL logic-based circuits was checked with a power clock generator (2N2P-PCG) integrated into the design for the frequency range of 50 kHz to 250 kHz. The CCAL logic gates show an average of approximately 48% …
