Auto-Utility Trailer Combinations On Rural Highways In Kentucky, Bruce S. Siria, Robert C. Deen Dec 1973

Auto-Utility Trailer Combinations On Rural Highways In Kentucky, Bruce S. Siria, Robert C. Deen

Kentucky Transportation Center Research Report

An analysis of accident records indicated that auto-utility trailer (A-UT) combinations are involved in a disproportionately high number of traffic mishaps. Locations which have a history of accidents involving A-UT vehicles indicated that differential crosswinds and unanticipated driving maneuvers contribute to the driver's loss of control. A-UT combinations contributed to the fatigue loss in pavement life approximately 50 percent as much as single-unit, two-axle, six-tire trucks (per vehicle). In general, this vehicle type constituted approximately three percent of the total traffic stream. Analysis of speed distributions indicated an equivalency factor for A-UT combinations equal to that for trucks for similar …

The Creep Response Of Cohesive Soils: A Method Of Design Using Rheological Strength Parameters, David L. Allen Dec 1973

The Creep Response Of Cohesive Soils: A Method Of Design Using Rheological Strength Parameters, David L. Allen

Kentucky Transportation Center Research Report

The creep response of four remolded soils and undisturbed soils from two landslide sites is presented. A method for obtaining the yield stress of soil from creep test data is presented and discussed. "Viscosity diagrams", showing the location of the yield stress is approximately 50 percent of peak stress, were obtained from conventional triaxial tests. There is more scatter in data from undisturbed soils than in data from remolded soils. Mohr's failure envelopes, constructed from yield stress data, give internal friction angles having values from approximately five to ten degrees. Strength data, calculated indirectly from peak relaxation modulus, are also …

Traffic Control For Maintenance On High-Speed Highways, William M. Seymour, Robert C. Deen, James H. Havens Dec 1973

Traffic Control For Maintenance On High-Speed Highways, William M. Seymour, Robert C. Deen, James H. Havens

Kentucky Transportation Center Research Report

Observations were first made at lane closures on interstate highways where yellow warning signs were erected routinely in conjunction with contract work. Later data provided direct comparison between new yellow and new orange signs. One sign scheme was used throughout the study. Driver obedience improved when new signs of either color were used; this finding implies that signs should always be maintained in good condition. Orange signs were slightly more effective than yellow signs in reducing traffic conflicts and merges near the traffic cones. Results of the study tend to support the adoption of orange as the standard color for …

Local And Overall Buckling Of Cold-Formed Compression Members, John T. Dewolf, George Winter, Teoman Peköz Nov 1973

Local And Overall Buckling Of Cold-Formed Compression Members, John T. Dewolf, George Winter, Teoman Peköz

CCFSS Library (1939 - present)

The objective of this investigation has been to develop information on the interaction between local plate buckling and overall column buckling in cold-formed compression members with a view toward possible improvement of those provisions in the American Iron and Steel Institute Specification for the Design or Cold-Formed Steel Structural Members concerned with column design. Two types of compression members were tested: two channels connected flange-to-flange to form a box section, and two channels connected back-to-back to form an I-section. For both of these shapes, the stress at which local buckling occurs and the postbuckling strength were varied by varying the …

Evaluation Of The Traffic Noise Prediction Procedure, Kenneth R. Agent, Charles V. Zegeer Nov 1973

Evaluation Of The Traffic Noise Prediction Procedure, Kenneth R. Agent, Charles V. Zegeer

Kentucky Transportation Center Research Report

Approximately 270 noise-level recordings were obtained at 39 highway sites and compared with the noise-level predictions obtained by the procedure outlined in NCHRP Report 117. The measured noise levels were computed in terms of the A-weighted L10 value (level exceeded 10 percent of time) and then compared to the predicted noise levels. A significant discrepancy was found between predicted and measured noise levels; generally, the predicted values exceeded the measured values. Average error per location was 4.8 dBA; the maximum error was 13 dBA. A nomograph was devised to correct the predicted value; this nomograph involves observer-to-roadway distances, truck …

Traffic Accident Reporting In Kentucky, Donald R. Herd Nov 1973

Traffic Accident Reporting In Kentucky, Donald R. Herd

Kentucky Transportation Center Research Report

This study reviews the organizational structure and processing procedures used in accident surveillance. Consideration was given to the techniques that various state governmental agencies use in their analysis of accident reports and statistics. It was concluded that Kentucky should enact uniform accident reporting legislation. A standard form should be prescribed for use by law enforcement agencies in complying with the reporting requirement. The creation of an Accident Records Unit to receive, process, and statistically analyze the reports is recommended.

Gaussian Light Beams In Inhomogeneous Media, Lee W. Casperson Oct 1973

Gaussian Light Beams In Inhomogeneous Media, Lee W. Casperson

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Publications and Presentations

Vector wave solutions are obtained for the propagation of beams of light in media having slow spatial variations of the gain, loss, or index of refraction. The formalism developed here is applicable to a wide range of problems, and an exa mple considered in detail is the propagation of off-axis beams in lenslike laser materials and optical waveguides. A procedure is also described for the diagnosis of localized dielectric inhomogeneities such as plasmas by means of Gaussian laser beams.

Accidents On Rural Interstate And Parkway Roads And Their Relation To Pavement Friction, Rolands L. Rizenbergs, James L. Burchett, Cass T. Napier

Kentucky Transportation Center Research Report

Friction measurements were made with a skid trailer at 70 mph (31 m/s) on 770 miles (1240 km) of rural, four-lane, controlled-access routes on the interstate and parkway systems in Kentucky. Each construction project was treated as a test section. Accident experience, friction measurements, and traffic volumes were obtained for each. Various relationships between wet-weather accidents and skid resistance were analyzed. The expression of accident occurrence which correlated best with skid and slip resistance was wet-weather accidents per 100 million vehicle miles. Accidents increased greatly as Skid Numbers (70 mph or 31 m/s) decreased from 27 ± 1. Analysis of …

In Situ Shear Strength Parameters By Dutch Cone Penetration Tests, C. Thomas Gorman, Tommy C. Hopkins, Vincent P. Drnevich Sep 1973

In Situ Shear Strength Parameters By Dutch Cone Penetration Tests, C. Thomas Gorman, Tommy C. Hopkins, Vincent P. Drnevich

Kentucky Transportation Center Research Report

Dutch cone penetration testing was performed and undisturbed samples were collected at four Kentucky highway sites. Shear strength, as determined by consolidated, undrained triaxial testing of the undisturbed samples, was correlated with friction resistance as measured by the Dutch friction cone. Statistical analysis of all data showed shear strength to be about 80 percent of friction resistance. Recommendations for the use of the Dutch cone penetration test in Kentucky soils were also made.

Vehicle Noise Survey In Kentucky, Kenneth R. Agent, Rolands L. Rizenbergs Sep 1973

Vehicle Noise Survey In Kentucky, Kenneth R. Agent, Rolands L. Rizenbergs

Kentucky Transportation Center Research Report

Individual noise measurements were obtained on 10,500 motor vehicles operating on Kentucky highways. The roadways were selected to represent varied geometric and environmental conditions and posted speed limits. Percentages of automobiles and trucks exceeding a given level of noise were determined. As expected, noise levels of trucks were significantly higher than for automobiles, and larger trucks produced higher noise levels than smaller trucks. For any vehicle type, noise increased with an increase in speed limit.

Minimum Cost Design Of Water Distribution Systems, Don J. Wood, C. O. Charles Sep 1973

Minimum Cost Design Of Water Distribution Systems, Don J. Wood, C. O. Charles

KWRRI Research Reports

The objective of this study was to develop the analytical tools and procedures for minimum cost design of water distribution systems. Both analog and digital means of carrying out pressure and flow calculations were developed. As a result of this effort, digital programs for pressure and flow calculations in water distribution systems were written and have been widely distributed to practicing engineers. One procedure is based on a direct solution of the basic system equations using a linearization scheme and has several advantages over conventional techniques such as the Hardy Cross method. These include avoiding the need to initially balance …

Symmetry-Forbidden Resonant Raman Scattering In Cu2O, S. P. S. Porto, P. F. Williams Aug 1973

Symmetry-Forbidden Resonant Raman Scattering In Cu2O, S. P. S. Porto, P. F. Williams

P. F. (Paul Frazer) Williams Publications

We have observed resonant Raman scattering from the two longitudinal branches of the Raman-forbidden F1u modes of Cu2O. The agreement between our measured scattering cross section as a function of excitation frequency and a calculated cross section which assumes an intraband Frohlich electron-phonon interaction is good. This represents a quantitative confirmation of the resonant-Raman-scattering theory proposed by Martin.

Buckling Of Diaphragm-Braced Columns Of Unsymmetrical Sections And Application To Wall Studs Design, Amir Simaan, George Winter, Teoman Peköz Aug 1973

Buckling Of Diaphragm-Braced Columns Of Unsymmetrical Sections And Application To Wall Studs Design, Amir Simaan, George Winter, Teoman Peköz

CCFSS Library (1939 - present)

Lateral bracing has a significant effect on increasing the buckling load of compression members. In the case of wall stud construction, such bracing is provided by wallboards directly attached to the stud along its length and results in increasing the load carrying capacity significantly. The objective of this investigation is to study the behavior of singly symmetric sections braced by shear diaphragms and to apply the theoretical findings verified by experimental results to the design of wall studs. In the present investigation the shear rigidity as well as the rotational restraint of the diaphragm are considered. Using an energy approach, …

Generalized Feedback Shift Register Pseudorandom Number Algorithm, Theodore Gyle Lewis, W. H. Payne Jul 1973

Generalized Feedback Shift Register Pseudorandom Number Algorithm, Theodore Gyle Lewis, W. H. Payne

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

The generalized feedback shift register pseudorandom number algorithm has several advantages over all other pseudorandom number generators. These advantages are: (1) it produces multidimensional pseudorandom numbers; (2) it has an arbitrarily long period independent of the word size of the computer on which it is implemented; (3) it is faster than other pseudorandom number generators; (4) the "same" floating-point pseudorandom number sequence is obtained on any machine, that is, the high order mantissa bits of each pseudorandom number agree on all machines— examples are given for IBM 360, Sperry-Rand-Univac 1108, Control Data 6000, and Hewlett-Packard 2100 series computers; (5) it …

Process Control Of Activated Sludge Treatment, Richard I. Kermode, Robert W. J. Brett, Kenneth A. Debelak, John J. Davis Jul 1973

Process Control Of Activated Sludge Treatment, Richard I. Kermode, Robert W. J. Brett, Kenneth A. Debelak, John J. Davis

KWRRI Research Reports

General feed forward controllers, conforming to standard control modes, have been derived for an activated sludge process. The analysis indicated that the appropriate controllers are proportional control with measurement of substrate flow rate, and derivative control with measurement of inlet substrate concentration, and manipulation of the rate of return sludge by both controllers.

The performance of these controllers was tested by computer simulation of five dynamic aerator models with and without sludge storage, and with two settling basin models. In all cases significant reduction of the maximum exit substrate concentration was achieved. Additional improvement resulted from the use of sludge …
