For many years, the Mechanical Engineering Department of the University of New Mexico has been interested in developing a more reliable and expedient method to determine octane readings of gasolines than the conventional CFR Motor Method of Test for Knock Characteristics of Motor Fuels. A summary of the development of the conventional CFR Test method and a brief discussion of the operational procedure of this method is necessary to better understand the need for a new fuel rating procedure. The general scope of the thesis investigation is limited to the engineering design and construction of a stationary-wave device for the experimental determination of the sound absorption coefficients of various building materials, the calibration of the apparatus to give comparisons with results obtained in the more expensive reverberation method, and to attempt to correlate observed results with generally accepted acoustical standards.

It was considered by the writer that characteristics of oscilloscope wave forms representing the varying pressures taking place in the CFR engine cylinder might provide an index to octane ratings of gasoline. Obtaining pressure wave forms on the oscilloscope required some medium for providing an electrical signal in response to engine cylinder pressures. A quartz pressure element was considered as the item that could fulfill this requirement.

Flood routing through reservoirs serves several major functions. It makes possible the determination of the effect of a reservoir, whether constructed for flood control purposes alone or for other purposes, on historic or predicated future floods at the reservoir site. The effect at the dam site then provides a basis for calculating the effect downstream. It also aids in obtaining the proper manipulation of gated spillways on multiple purpose reservoirs to provide the most advantageous flood control on the stream and at the same time make the best use of the water for power, irrigation, or other purposes.

Conchas Dam and Reservoir, one of the largest water resources projects in the Southwest, build under the supervision of Corps of Engineers, is located below the confluence of the Conchas River and South Canadian River, near Tucumcari, New Mexico. Although it is the source of water supply for the vast Tucumcari Irrigation Project of the U.S. Bureau of Reclamation, its main purpose is flood control. Conchas Dam exerts a tremendous influence on the economy of the northeastern portion of Texas. To a hydraulic engineer its large size and complex hydraulic features present a most challenging field for study and research
