Pvd And Cvd Coatings For The Metal Forming Industry, Simon Montgomery, David Kennedy, Noel O'Dowd

Conference Papers

Metal forming applications are, by their very nature, taxing on the tools and machines used to achieve a finished component. Material degradation and wear is of critical importance in any such operation as a failing in the tool or machine has the potential to cause health hazards and/or significant monetary losses. The wear of material is due to the contact of two opposing surfaces and their subsequent motion relative to each other. It can take many forms some examples of which are: a two or three body abrasive type, a rolling fatigue type or an adhesion type.

Much research has …

Thermal Spray Coatings: Effect Of Selected Coating Parameters On Corrosion Resistance, David Culliton, David Kennedy, Tony Betts, P. Concannon Jan 2009

Thermal Spray Coatings: Effect Of Selected Coating Parameters On Corrosion Resistance, David Culliton, David Kennedy, Tony Betts, P. Concannon

Conference Papers

Thermal Spray coatings have long been adopted as a surface modification technique. Unique in their ability to mechanically bond to the surface of most substrate materials, the Thermal Spray coatings offer a generic solution to improving mechanical, corrosion or tribo-corrosion properties of the affected substrate material. Of the available systems, Flame Spray techniques offer the simplest and most cost-effective method of applying these coatings. In the current study, an investigation was conducted into the comparative performance of a selection of these coating systems – a polymer coating, with various coating thicknesses, and a metallic coating - in a number of …

Electronic Speckle Pattern Shearing Interferometry For Nondestructive Testing Of Thermal Sprayed Alloy Coatings, Qiang Xue Jan 2005

Electronic Speckle Pattern Shearing Interferometry For Nondestructive Testing Of Thermal Sprayed Alloy Coatings, Qiang Xue

Conference Papers

Thermal sprayed coatings have wide engineering applications. There now exists a wide range of destructive and nondestructive testing (NDT) methods for surface coating inspections. This paper describes an application of electronic speckle pattern shearing Interferometry (ESPI) for NDT of thermal sprayed surface coatings. In contrast to other conventional methods such as eddy current, ultrasonic or X-ray, ESPSI allows fast and large survey area inspection. Experimental results of shearographic measurements are presented. Thermal sprayed coatings were tested using ESPI. Delaminations of the coatings were detected and the fringe patterns were captured using this method. It is shown that the shearography technique can …
