Evaluation Of The Degree Of Blending Of Reclaimed Asphalt Pavement (Rap) Binder For Warm Mix Asphalt, Luis Gaitan Nov 2012

Evaluation Of The Degree Of Blending Of Reclaimed Asphalt Pavement (Rap) Binder For Warm Mix Asphalt, Luis Gaitan

Theses and Dissertations

The paving industry in recent years has seen the emergence of a plethora of warm mix asphalt (WMA) technologies and application. With most states incorporating a recycled asphalt pavement (RAP) limit, it is necessary for WMA to not only serve as a greener technology but to work in conjunction with current RAP practices. Presently, most agencies assume a full blending condition in their mixtures which may lead to under asphalted mixtures. The purpose of this study is to develop a methodology for quantifying the degree of blending that occurs in WMA RAP mixtures at higher percentages of RAP. In addition …

Platinum Nanocatalytic Combustion Of Methanol-Air Mixture, James Applegate Sep 2012

Platinum Nanocatalytic Combustion Of Methanol-Air Mixture, James Applegate

Theses and Dissertations

Catalytic combustion's ability to release the potential energy of high energy density fuels could transform the portable electronic device market by removing the reliance on batteries. Catalytic combustion is a generally well understood combustion technique, but the effects of specific experimental conditions (catalyst loading, flow rates and substrates) on catalyst performance are not as well known. Systhesized catalytic Pt nonoparticles (dp ~ 11.6 nm) were dispersed on a cordierite substrate and were characterized using TEM, XRD and SEM. Experimental results were obtained in a miniature-scale continuous flow reactor. Subsequent studies report the effect catalyst loading and reactor flow parameters have …

Magneto-Elastic Behavior In Hard- And Soft-Mre's Including Demagnetizing Effects, Juan Roche Aug 2012

Magneto-Elastic Behavior In Hard- And Soft-Mre's Including Demagnetizing Effects, Juan Roche

Theses and Dissertations

This thesis studies the magnetic and mechanical behavior of magnetorheological elastomers (MREs) based on four possible permutations defined along particle alignment (Aligned and Unaligned) and magnetization (Hard- or Soft-magnetic) pairs. These pairs designations yield classes A-H, U-H, A-S and U-S. The last two classes comprise traditional MREs. Samples were fabricated by mixing DOW HS II silicone elastomer compound and 30% by volume of either nominally 40-micron M-type barium hexaferrite (BaM) or 325-mesh iron (Fe) particles cured with or without the presence of a magnetic field. Magnetization and density measurements were employed to help confirm fabrication of the four distinct classes. …

Schmidtea Mediterranea Planaris As A Novel Animal Model For Investigating The Dynamics Of Nervous System Development In Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder, Jesse Lowe Aug 2012

Schmidtea Mediterranea Planaris As A Novel Animal Model For Investigating The Dynamics Of Nervous System Development In Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder, Jesse Lowe

Theses and Dissertations

Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder (FASD) is a prevalent developmental disease that is caused by excess in utero exposure to ethanol. The importance of timing and dosage of ethanol has been elucidated by previous investigations conducted with humans, rodents, and other model organisms, but challenges associated with determining functional deficiencies have necessitated the introduction of a novel animal model for investigating the dynamics of FASD. In this thesis, we propose that the freshwater flatworm planarian species, Schmidtea mediterranea, has the capability to fulfill this need. Planaria have the ability to completely regenerate fragments into intact, functional animals, and in these studies, …

High Reclaimed Asphalt Pavement In Hot Mix Asphalt, Alan Norton Jr Jun 2012

High Reclaimed Asphalt Pavement In Hot Mix Asphalt, Alan Norton Jr

Theses and Dissertations

When old roads have to be replaced, the existing pavement, known as Reclaimed Asphalt Pavement (RAP) is ripped up, milled, and stockpiled and can be used in the creation of new mixes in order to save money and resources. New Jersey state specifications limit the percentage of RAP that can be used to 15% for surface courses and 25% for the intermediate and base courses; however, other states have implemented much higher RAP percentages. The limitations are placed because the interaction between the virgin and residual RAP binder is unknown, with respect to the amount of residual binder that is …

Hydrogen Silsesquioxane (Hsq) For Use In Nano Imprint Lithography, Nathaniel Clark Jan 2012

Hydrogen Silsesquioxane (Hsq) For Use In Nano Imprint Lithography, Nathaniel Clark

Theses and Dissertations

Innovations are being researched, using materials science, in the areas of sub- 100nm feature production. Current methods such as electron beam lithography (EBL), Extreme Ultra-Violet Lithography (EUV), and Nano-imprint lithography (NIL) are currently being studied to deliver a high throughput, low-cost process, and high field size for nano-lithography. EBL is a technique which can generate very small features (sub-10nm) but is a serial process which has undesirable time constraints. EUV is the latest generation of photo-lithography which can produce 35nm features, but has a limited area of exposure. NIL is a high resolution high throughput process, but still has time …

Carbon Dioxide Transfer Through Hollow Fiber Membranes, Pavlo Kostetskyy Jan 2012

Carbon Dioxide Transfer Through Hollow Fiber Membranes, Pavlo Kostetskyy

Theses and Dissertations

Studies on absorption of CO2 into an aqueous solution using hydrophobic microporous hollow fiber membranes (HFM's) were performed. The use of HFM's for CO2 transfer could significantly improve the biomass growth rate in a photobioreactor for algal biofuel production. The membrane modules were operated in a sealed-end, parallel flow configuration. Several modules were constructed that ranged in interfacial surface area from 466 to 1397 m2/m3. The mass transfer coefficients were calculated based on a model of the system that included a prediction of the internal axial gas concentrations within the fiber lumen. This model was validated by measuring bulk gas …
