Freeze-Thaw Resistance Of Concrete: Insight From Microstructural Properties, Sam Adu-Amankwah, Leon Black Dr, M Zajac, J Skoceck, M Ben Haha

International Conference on Durability of Concrete Structures

Composite cements offer low carbon alternatives to conventional CEM I. These binders also generally tend to perform better than CEM I in aggressive chemical environments. However, their freeze-thaw resistance, evident through surface scaling and internal damage is usually impaired. Postulated theories on freeze-thaw induced damage do not fully explain the origin of this weakness in composite cement concretes.

This paper systematically presents the phase assemblage changes associated with the freeze-thaw of concrete specimen made from composite cements with and without limestone. The freeze-thaw test was performed on concrete according to CIF method based on CEN/TR 15177 and the corresponding cement …

Synthesis And Characterization Of Polymer-Silica Composite Hydrogel Particles And Influence Of Hydrogel Composition On Cement Paste Microstructure, Matthew J. Krafcik, B Bose, Kendra Erk

School of Materials Engineering Faculty Publications

The objective of this research is to define the fundamental structure-property relationships of water-swollen polymer hydrogel particles that are employed as internal curing agents in cementitious mixtures, in addition to reporting a novel synthesis procedure for combining pozzolanic materials with hydrogel particles. Solution polymerization was performed to incorporate amorphous nanosilica particles within acrylic-based polymer hydrogel particles of varying chemical compositions (i.e., monomer ratio of acrylic acid (AA) to acrylamide (AM)). Experiments were designed to measure the absorption capacity and kinetics of hydrogel particles immersed in pure water and cementitious pore solution, as well as determine the impact of particles on …

Using High Resolution Images To Investigate Fatigue Crack Initiation Of Alloys At The Microstructural Level, Michael P. Reinhold, Alberto Mello, Michael Sangid Aug 2017

Using High Resolution Images To Investigate Fatigue Crack Initiation Of Alloys At The Microstructural Level, Michael P. Reinhold, Alberto Mello, Michael Sangid

The Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowship (SURF) Symposium

Microstructural features within a material dictate the material’s mechanical behavior and lead to localized strains as the sample is deformed. In order to further understand structural failure, an improved understanding of how microstructural features influence failure is necessary. Fatigue is one common mode of failure for aerospace applications, and a better understanding of the conditions of crack initiation can provide information that ultimately may increase longevity of aerospace systems. This paper investigates the hypothesis that fatigue crack initiation for a cyclically loaded sample is correlated to areas of higher localized strain. The experiment was conducted using a Ti-6Al-4V sample subjected …

Numerical Simulation Of The Early Age Three-Dimensional Microstructure Development Of Cement Pastes, Yunsheng Zhang, Zhiyong Liu, Wei Sun Jul 2014

Numerical Simulation Of The Early Age Three-Dimensional Microstructure Development Of Cement Pastes, Yunsheng Zhang, Zhiyong Liu, Wei Sun

International Conference on Durability of Concrete Structures

The formation process of microstructure in cement pastes was first simulated with a numerical model CEMHYD3D. The influence of water-to-cement ratio and particles size on heat release and degree of hydration were then investigated. In addition, the mass of CH and C–S–H phases simulated have been verified by measuring values by thermogravimetry–differential scanning calorimetry (TG-DSC) and X-ray diffraction (XRD)-Rietveld analysis. The evolutions of solids phase percolation and capillary pores de-percolation were also identified by means of a three-dimensional (3D) numerical model. The results show that the simulated values are in good agreement with the available experimental data, indicating a good …

Correlating Grain Size To Radiation Damage Tolerance Of Tungsten Materials Exposed To Relevant Fusion Conditions, Sean Robert Gonderman Jul 2014

Correlating Grain Size To Radiation Damage Tolerance Of Tungsten Materials Exposed To Relevant Fusion Conditions, Sean Robert Gonderman

Open Access Theses

Tungsten remains a leading candidate for plasma facing component (PFC) in future fusion devices. This is in large part due to its strong thermal and mechanical properties. The ITER project has already chosen to use an all tungsten divertor. Despite having a high melting temperature and low erosion rate, tungsten faces a large variety of issues when subject to fusion like conditions. These include embrittlement, melting, and extreme morphology change (growth of fuzz nanostructure). The work presented here investigates mechanisms that drive surface morphology change in tungsten materials exposed to fusion relevant plasmas. Specifically, tungsten materials of different grain sizes …

Set-Up Of Digital Image Correlation Apparatus, German A. Parada, Michael Sangid Oct 2013

Set-Up Of Digital Image Correlation Apparatus, German A. Parada, Michael Sangid

The Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowship (SURF) Symposium

Digital Image Correlation (DIC) is a valuable and customizable experimental technique employed to analyze localized strain regions on materials by tracking the displacement of points on the surface of the studied material under applied stress. To investigate materials behavior, it is vital to correctly set-up the DIC apparatus so work has been done to ready the equipment to start measurements on two distinct projects. On the first project, the fatigue crack behavior of a high-strength aluminum alloy will be studied by cyclic loading, testing necessary for the safe design of aircraft parts utilizing this novel alloy. DIC will be carried …

Microstructural Evolution During Stress Relaxation Of Gold Thin Films, Luthfia Amra Syarbaini Jan 2013

Microstructural Evolution During Stress Relaxation Of Gold Thin Films, Luthfia Amra Syarbaini

Open Access Theses

Microstructure evolution in metal thin films for use in microelectronic devices was studied due to the formation of defects such as whiskers and hillocks that may cause problems in electrical circuits. Thin film stress relaxation can occur through a variety of processes. Understanding such mechanisms and the conditions under which certain mechanism dominate can potentially lead to the improved control of thin film stability. Studies of the 3D microstructural changes in Au thin films on silicon and other substrates with different thermal expansion coefficients aid us in understanding thin film relaxation phenomena such as hillock/whisker formation. Techniques such as in-situ …

Strength And Durability Of Concrete: Effects Of Cement Paste-Aggregate Interfaces, Part I: Theoretical Study On Influence Of Interfacial Transition Zone On Properties Of Concrete Materials, Yiguo Zhang, Wai-Fah Chen Jan 1998

Strength And Durability Of Concrete: Effects Of Cement Paste-Aggregate Interfaces, Part I: Theoretical Study On Influence Of Interfacial Transition Zone On Properties Of Concrete Materials, Yiguo Zhang, Wai-Fah Chen

JTRP Technical Reports

This research was based on a two-part basic research investigation studying the effects of cement paste-aggregate interfaces (or interfacial transition zones-HZ) on strength and durability of concrete. Part I dealt with the theoretical study and Part II dealt with the experimental. Part I, the theoretical part, illustrates the effect of ITZ on the concrete properties by assuming its elastic moduli to be varied continuously in the region. A four-phase composite model is employed and three functions are chosen to model the moduli variation in the ITZ. A theoretical solution for an n-layered spherical inclusion model is used to estimate the …
