Mining Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

By carrying out the cyclic dynamic compressive experiment, the dynamic compressive properties of heat-treated and pre-stressed cement mortar subjected to cyclic impact loading were obtained. The results show that under static and cyclic impact loading, the peak stress shows a nonlinear decrease trend with the increasing dynamic impact number, and the failure strength decreases as heated temperature increases. The strain rate shows a linear increase trend as impact number increases. The relationship among the strain rate, temperature and impact number obey exponential relations, which could be expressed as ε˙ = 0.64E0.00854T+4.93 X 10−3tn+0.77N+18.70. The strain rate increase factor could be …

Dielectric Permittivity Of Pzt 95/5 Ferroelectric Ceramics And 0.27pin-Pmn-0.26pt Single Crystals Under Pulsed High Electric Fields, Sergey I. Shkuratov, Jason Baird, Vladimir G. Antipov, Christopher S. Lynch

Mining Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

The dependence of the dielectric permittivity of ferroelectric materials on electric field magnitude impacts the performance of ferroelectric devices. In a ferroelectric generator, a shock wave travels through the ferroelectric element and depolarizes it, and surface charges are released from the element electrodes, resulting in the generation of a megawatt power level for several microseconds. The dielectric properties of the compressed and uncompressed zones of the ferroelectric element affect the generated voltage and energy. The results of previous studies indicate that the low-field dielectric permittivity of poled Pb0.99(Zr0.95Ti0.05)0.98Nb0.02O3 (PZT 95/5) ferroelectrics in the uncompressed zone differs significantly from the high-field …

Coal dust is a significant health hazard for coal workers, as prolonged inhalation can lead to severe diseases such as Coal Workers' Pneumoconiosis. Water spray with surfactants is commonly used as a pre-control strategy to control coal dust in underground mines. The zeta potential test is a widely used static test to evaluate surfactants with different ionicities. However, there are still some arguments about the evaluation criteria of zeta potential on surfactant performance between different researchers. Moreover, whether zeta potential can be used as an index to evaluate the surfactant suppression performance is inconclusive. To address these problems, this study …

Mining Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Local community acceptance, a key indicator of the socio-political risk of a project, is addressed through good stakeholder (community) engagement. Discrete choice modeling (DCM) enhances stakeholder analysis and has been widely applied to encourage community engagement in energy projects. However, very little detail is provided on how researchers design discrete choice experiments (DCEs). DCE design is the key step for effective and efficient data collection. Without this, the discrete choice model may not be meaningful and may be misleading in the local community engagement effort. This paper presents a framework for mining community engagement DCE design in an attempt to …

Build-in-place (BIP) refuge alternatives (RAs) are used to provide safe havens for miners unable to escape their working area after an accident like an explosion. These underground infrastructures are built over time in various locations and might expose to mining-induced stresses. The convergences related to these stress redistributions around the mine openings might change their structural integrity and, subsequently, the explosion resistivity. Studying the effect of increasing vertical load like abutment stress on such underground mine stopping for the explosion resistance is difficult because repetitive explosion experiments on these structures are perilous and challenging. This study uses two case studies …

Analyzing The Effectiveness Of The Gurney Method For Small Scale Fragmentation Propulsion Using Exploding Bridgewire Detonators, Emily M. Johnson, Rachel L. Bauer, Catherine E. Johnson

Mining Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Explosives are common in military, mining, and construction applications where the explosive properties are understood, but mechanics of how the explosive's energy fragments and throws materials are less known. Considering the type of confining material around an explosive, creates variability in fragmentation behavior due to the individual material characteristics. The most common method for assessing fragmentation behavior is the Gurney method, which eliminates any consideration of fragmenting material properties. The Gurney method assumes that, on a large scale, the inconsistencies in material are irrelevant and only the mass of the confiner need be considered. However, it is known in many …
