The Impact Of Unscheduled Maintenance To An Airline’S On Time Performance, Augusto Dalazen, Beatriz Barbi, Beatriz Ponzoni, Giovanna Simões, Lucas Kamalakian Dec 2022

The Impact Of Unscheduled Maintenance To An Airline’S On Time Performance, Augusto Dalazen, Beatriz Barbi, Beatriz Ponzoni, Giovanna Simões, Lucas Kamalakian

Student Works

Unscheduled maintenance events have a significant impact on airlines performance and network operations. Some events can have its consequences minimized by simple actions due to its simplicity and lack of influence in the safe conduction of a flight.

This study aimed on collecting data regarding the cost and consequences of ground turn back events in the Airbus A320 family. The study suggested that after the implementation of proper supporting regulation on Crew Applied MEL, money would be saved as well as network disruption consequences could be avoided.

The data presented in this study reflects current Brazilian legislation, and data from …

Business Benefits Associated With Improving Fatigue Regulations For Cargo Pilots, Arthur Chiari, Bruna De Gois E Silva, Nelson Christianini Nov 2022

Business Benefits Associated With Improving Fatigue Regulations For Cargo Pilots, Arthur Chiari, Bruna De Gois E Silva, Nelson Christianini

Student Works

The central idea of this research is to assess business-related factors in the Pilots ́ Fatigue Regulations and evaluate if a more flexible regulation would improve productivity of airline cargo pilots in Brazil.

The results of the study have indicated that Brazilian Civil Aviation Authority (ANAC) can create a regulatory environment that may lead up to 34,28% of improved productivity of pilots ́ availability in cargo operations, which may contribute for gains up to USD $3.6 million for an airline with cargo 70 pilots flying 16.500 hours per year.

Aviation fatigue regulations are an extremely important subject in the aviation …

The objective of this Research Project was to study the possible benefits of developing an improved Metering Control System. This study identified potential cost savings and reduced emissions through the greater use of a Metering Control System. The results of this research have indicated an annual cost reduction of $720,000 in fuel burn and a significant delay time reduction caused by accumulated ground traffic. In addition, during peak hours, it was concluded that savings could be potentially higher. Therefore, by optimizing the ground movement, it is also expected a lower level of CO2 emissions, an increased safety level due to …

Neutralization Of Fuel Tankering Emissions For Environmental Sustainability, Marcos Café, Diogo Coutinho, Daniel Martinelli, Alex Shigihara, Fabricio Sulzbacher Oct 2021

Neutralization Of Fuel Tankering Emissions For Environmental Sustainability, Marcos Café, Diogo Coutinho, Daniel Martinelli, Alex Shigihara, Fabricio Sulzbacher

Student Works

The strategy adopted had verified the impacts of Fuel Tankering by the total value assessment in the Brazilian aviation industry in 2019, recommending practical actions to compensate and neutralize damages caused on the environment.

The importance of sustainability has significantly increased over the past years.

The aviation industry has represented an important pillar helping society to meet their present needs, without compromising the environment and future generations.

The present research had as main objective to verify if the Brazilian aviation industry can neutralize the carbon emissions from Fuel Tankering, a practice of refueling more than necessary to gain financial leverage …

Adverse Weather Low-Probality Forecast Effects On Flight Fuel Planning, Fabio Castro, Diogo Umsza, David Louzada, Paulo Ricardo Lanzarini, Manoel Valente Oct 2021

Adverse Weather Low-Probality Forecast Effects On Flight Fuel Planning, Fabio Castro, Diogo Umsza, David Louzada, Paulo Ricardo Lanzarini, Manoel Valente

Student Works

This project aimed to improve the efficiency of flight planning of regular airlines regarding the addition of extra fuel due to weather forecasts with low probability occurrence regarding rain and thunderstorm events (30 and 40% chances).

Recommendations:

  • Expand the scope/sample of analyzed flights to include other significant strategic airports.

  • Involve Operations Control Center, Air Operations Engineering, and Safety Department in future studies in order to create an effective policy for extra fuel supply (on planning and flight execution).

  • Include in the study other meteorological phenomena and conditions that involve flights extra fuel supply, such as FOG, MIST, HAZE.

This report performed research to assess the possibility of implementing hybrid passenger terminals. The benefits would be the integrating domestic and international passengers in the same restricted area. The initial hypothesis of this study was to focus on optimization that could bring advantages in terms of efficiency, customer service, and operational safety.

The goal of this project was not to bring in-depth data on the topic, but to expose readers to the main players in the industry and understand the variables that impact the topic. Thus, although there are different perspectives on the integration of terminals, it was possible to …

Aviation Maintenance Safety Management Challenges : Thematic Analysis, Tori Kobayashi, Brent D. Bowen Feb 2020

Aviation Maintenance Safety Management Challenges : Thematic Analysis, Tori Kobayashi, Brent D. Bowen

Student Works

Aircraft maintenance is a fundamental and necessary element in any aviation operation. In order to be considered safe and airworthy, operators must be diligent in the way aircraft are maintained and how employees are performing. A safety management system (SMS) is an organized approach by management to include every employee of a company that standardizes the procedures a company will follow to improve safety. The structure of SMS was designed by the International Civil Aviation Organization in order to be standardized across different countries and types of operations. Currently, only part 121 U.S. commercial airlines are mandated by the Federal …

The implementation of safety programs in Flight Operations has been successful since the Federal Aviation Administration formally introduced Safety Management Systems (SMS) procedures in 2000. The addition of safety programs like SMS into aviation organizations has been confirmed to improve safety culture, communication, and overall hazard mitigation. This research explores the changes and improvements that are made in maintenance programs where an SMS is formally implemented. In the United States it is legal for children under the age of twenty-four months to fly in commercial aircraft on the lap of a parent or guardian, while being unsecured or unrestrained. Throughout …
