Quantifying And Mapping Induced Strain In Canvas Paintings Using Laser Shearography, Philip Klausmeyer, Matthew Cushman, Ivo Dobrev, Morteza Khaleghi, Ellery Harrington, Xiaoran Chen, Cosme Furlong

Morteza Khaleghi

Evaluation of museums’ condition standards used for the exhibition of canvas paintings requires a quantitative technique capable of measuring strain induced by changes in temperature, relative humidity, and the thermomechanical effects of light, as well as the effects of ambient vibration. This paper presents advances in developing a customized shearography system for temporal characterization of strains that occur on canvas paintings when subjected to changes in exhibition conditions. The shearography system performs measurements of displacement derivatives along two orthogonal shearing directions and is synchronized with an IR camera to provide thermal maps of the area analyzed. Innovations incorporated into the …

A Sinteractive Ni-Bazr0.8Y0.2O3-Δ Composite Membrane For Hydrogen Separation, Shumin Fang, Siwei Wang, Kyle S. Brinkman, Fanglin Chen Mar 2015

A Sinteractive Ni-Bazr0.8Y0.2O3-Δ Composite Membrane For Hydrogen Separation, Shumin Fang, Siwei Wang, Kyle S. Brinkman, Fanglin Chen

Fanglin Chen

BaZr0.8Y0.2O3−δ (BZY) is an excellent candidate material for hydrogen permeation membranes due to its high bulk proton conductivity, mechanical robustness, and chemical stability in H2O- and CO2-containing environments. Unfortunately, the use of BZY as a separation membrane has been greatly restrained by its highly refractory nature, poor grain boundary proton conductivity, high number of grain boundaries resulting from limited grain growth during sintering, as well as low electronic conductivity. These problems can be resolved by the fabrication of a Ni–BZY composite membrane with large BZY grains, which requires the development …

Low Temperature, Organic-Free Synthesis Of Ba3B6O9(Oh)6 Nanorods And Ss-Bab2O4 Nanospindles, Rui Li, Xinyoung Tao, Xiaodong Li Feb 2015

Low Temperature, Organic-Free Synthesis Of Ba3B6O9(Oh)6 Nanorods And Ss-Bab2O4 Nanospindles, Rui Li, Xinyoung Tao, Xiaodong Li

Xiaodong Li

Using a low temperature, organic-free hydrothermal technique, single-crystalline barium polyborate Ba3B6O9(OH)6 (BBOH) nanorods were synthesized. It was found that β-BaB2O4(BBO) nanospindles can be achieved by annealing the BBOH nanorods at a relatively low temperature of 810 °C. Transmission electron microscopy (TEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) techniques were used to characterize these nanomaterials. The formation mechanisms are discussed in conjunction with the crystallographic characteristics and surface energy of the BBOH nanorods and BBO nanospindles. UV-vis absorption spectra demonstrated that both BBOH nanorods and BBO nanospindles are …

Enhance Diamond Coating Adhesion By Oriented Interlayer Microcracking, Habio Guo, Xingcheng Xiao, Yue Qi, Zhi-Hui Xu, Xiaodong Li Feb 2015

Enhance Diamond Coating Adhesion By Oriented Interlayer Microcracking, Habio Guo, Xingcheng Xiao, Yue Qi, Zhi-Hui Xu, Xiaodong Li

Xiaodong Li

In this paper, we report a microcrack toughening mechanism for enhancing the adhesion of diamondcoating. The oriented microcracks were formed within the TiC interlayer to dissipate strain energy and accommodate deformation via the crack opening-closing mechanism, thus enhancing the coating/substrate interfacial toughness. The delamination of diamondcoating was effectively prevented when the parallel microcracks were confined within the interlayer and arrested at interfaces of coating/interlayer/substrate. Density functional theory calculations revealed that the highly anisotropicfracture strength of the TiC phase energetically favors crack initiation and propagation along (100) planes only, which are 54.7° away from the interface. These microcracks are constrained inside …

Self-Assembled Composite Nano-/Micronecklaces With Sio2 Beads In Boron Strings, Hai Ni, Xiaodong Li Feb 2015

Self-Assembled Composite Nano-/Micronecklaces With Sio2 Beads In Boron Strings, Hai Ni, Xiaodong Li

Xiaodong Li

Nano-/micronecklaces with SiO2 beads in boron strings were synthesized by simply sublimating the desired powders in a sealed quartz tube at high temperature. The boron strings have a rectangular cross section with width varying from 80to1000nm while the SiO2 beads bear either spindle or spherical shape with a size ranging from 100nmto5μm. The spacing between the SiO2 beads is uniform in each boron string. Both the boron strings and the SiO2 beads are amorphous and free of defects. The supersaturated vapors of silicon and oxygen induced the SiO2 bead formation.

Nanomechanical Characterization Of Cavity Growth And Rupture In Hydrogen-Implanted Single-Crystal Batio3., Young-Bae Park, Patrick Nardi, Xiaodong Li, Harry A. Atwater Feb 2015

Nanomechanical Characterization Of Cavity Growth And Rupture In Hydrogen-Implanted Single-Crystal Batio3., Young-Bae Park, Patrick Nardi, Xiaodong Li, Harry A. Atwater

Xiaodong Li

A thermodynamic model of cavitynucleation and growth in ion-implanted single-crystal BaTiO3 layer is proposed, and cavity formation is related to the measured mechanical properties to better understand hydrogen implantation-induced layer transfer processes for ferroelectric thin films. The critical radius for cavitynucleation was determined experimentally from blistering experiments performed under isochronal anneal conditions and was calculated using continuum mechanical models for deformation and fracture, together with thermodynamic models. Based on thermodynamic modeling, we suggest that cavitiesgrow toward the cracking criteria at a critical blister size whereupon gas is emitted from ruptured cavities. The main driving force for layer splitting is the …

Evaluating The Performance Of Fault Detection And Diagnostics Protocols Applied To Air-Cooled Unitary Air-Conditioning Equipment, David P. Yuill, James E. Braun Sep 2013

Evaluating The Performance Of Fault Detection And Diagnostics Protocols Applied To Air-Cooled Unitary Air-Conditioning Equipment, David P. Yuill, James E. Braun

David Yuill

Fault detection and diagnostics (FDD) tools are increasingly being applied to air-cooled unitary air-conditioning systems. However, it is not known how well these tools work because there is no standard method of measuring or evaluating the performance of FDD. In the current paper the authors describe the common faults that FDD is applied to in unitary systems, and propose a method of evaluating the performance of FDD protocols. The method involves feeding measurement data through a candidate protocol and collecting and organizing the responses based upon the fault’s impacts on performance. A library of faulted and unfaulted measurement data has …

Hydrogen Production From Biogas By Oxy-Reforming: Reaction System Analysis, Aleksandra Terlecka, Wojciech M. Budzianowski Dec 2011

Hydrogen Production From Biogas By Oxy-Reforming: Reaction System Analysis, Aleksandra Terlecka, Wojciech M. Budzianowski

Wojciech Budzianowski

Oxy-reforming is emerging as an interesting alternative to conventional methods of hydrogen generation. The current article characterises this process through analysis of individual reactions: SMR (steam methane reforming), WGS (water gas shift) and CPO (catalytic partial oxidation). Analyses relate to optimisation of thermal conditions thus enabling cost-effectivenes of the process.

Effects Of Co Nanoparticle Addition To Sn-3.8ag-0.7cu Solder On Interfacial Structure After Reflow And Ageing, Haseeb Asma Apr 2011

Effects Of Co Nanoparticle Addition To Sn-3.8ag-0.7cu Solder On Interfacial Structure After Reflow And Ageing, Haseeb Asma

Haseeb ASMA

Effects of Co nanoparticle additions to Sn-3.8Ag-0.7Cu on the structure of solder/copper interface have been studied after reflow and high temperature ageing (150 degrees C, up to 1008 h). Results show that the Co nanoparticles substantially suppress the growth of Cu(3)Sn but enhance Cu(6)Sn(5) growth. Cobalt nanoparticles reduce interdiffusion coefficient in Cu(3)Sn. It is suggested that the Co nanoparticles undergo surface dissolution during reflow and exert their influence, at least partially, through alloying effect. (C) 2011 Elsevier Ltd. Production And Purification Of Zircon Opacifier From Zircon Found In The Coastal Area Of Bangladesh, Haseeb Asma

Haseeb ASMA

In this study the potentiality of Bangladesh zircon as a raw material for opacifier was examined. Preparation of zircon flour was done by both wet and dry ball milling. Wet milling of zircon was found to be much efficient than dry milling. Zircon flour of peak size 8 mu m obtained by wet milling was purified by leaching in concentrated H(2)SO(4) acid. Leaching time was varied from 2 to 20 h and sulphuric acid concentration ranged from 10 to 80 ml/l. Both un-purified and purified Bangladesh zircon flour were tested for their performance as opacifier in a couple of local …

Laminar Flow In Mini-Fluidics Channels Assembly And Its Application In Zebra Fish Embryo Research, Radek Glaser

Radek Glaser

A Mini-Fluidics system was designed to facilitate the muscle growth of the Zebra Fish embryos. This experimental device is made of peristaltic pump, inflow/outflow manifolds, fluid storage tank, series of valves and flexible pipes and the main plate with six mini channels. These closed channels provide pathways for an extremely laminar flow. The Zebra Fish embryos are placed in the channels and exposed to the forces present in the fluid.

Development Of A Fan Airflow Station For Airflow Control In Vav Systems, David Yuill, Nathan Redmann, Mingsheng Liu Feb 2003

Development Of A Fan Airflow Station For Airflow Control In Vav Systems, David Yuill, Nathan Redmann, Mingsheng Liu

David Yuill

A fan airflow station has been developed by the authors. This station is used to determine fan airflow using fan speed and fan head as inputs. These inputs can be measured accurately in variable air volume (VAV) systems, so they can be used as a cost-effective control monitoring method for heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC) systems. Theoretical models have been developed for the flow station using both second and third order relationships between the airflow and the inputs. The theoretical model has been experimentally tested and excellent agreement between the model and the experimental values was found. The second …
