Assessing Risk In Iot Devices, David Levitsky
Assessing Risk In Iot Devices, David Levitsky
Master's Theses
The explosive growth of the Internet of Things ecosystem has thrust these devices into the center of our lives. Unfortunately, the desire to create these devices has been stronger than the one to secure them. Recent attacks have shown us ignoring security in Internet of Things devices can cause severe harm in both a digital and physical sense. This thesis outlines a framework for developers and managers to assess the risk of IoT devices using a weighted scoring system across five different categories. Our case studies suggest that devices with higher security considerations have a better security posture and lower …
Logging, Visualization, And Analysis Of Network And Power Data Of Iot Devices, Neal Huynh Nguyen
Logging, Visualization, And Analysis Of Network And Power Data Of Iot Devices, Neal Huynh Nguyen
Master's Theses
There are approximately 23.14 billion IoT(Internet of Things) devices currently in use worldwide. This number is projected to grow to over 75 billion by 2025. Despite their ubiquity little is known about the security and privacy implications of IoT devices. Several large-scale attacks against IoT devices have already been recorded.
To help address this knowledge gap, we have collected a year’s worth of network traffic and power data from 16 common IoT devices. From this data, we show that we can identify different smart speakers, like the Echo Dot, from analyzing one minute of power data on a shared power …
Using Low Power 5g Iot Devices Off-Network Utilizing Modified Prose Communication, John Aaron Swarner
Using Low Power 5g Iot Devices Off-Network Utilizing Modified Prose Communication, John Aaron Swarner
Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
In setups to enable IoT devices, high power radios are required in each of the devices separately. In order to reduce the power requirements for each individual device, a lower power radio could be used in order to reduce the total power requirements and size for the device and increase battery life or reduce power draws for each device. To enable this, a small change removing the application server requirements would be required. A mesh network could be used to enable communication to the main network, either to a tower that is within the range or through a larger relay …

Nb-Iot: A Network Slice For Massive Iot, Xhafer Krasniqi
UBT International Conference
Network virtualisation is a concept that has been around for some time now, but the concept of network slicing is more recent and only started to be mentioned in the context of 5G. In essence, network slicing is a specific form of network virtualisation that enables sharing of physical resources by multiple logical network slices used to serve different applications and use cases. One such a use case would be to allocate network resources to small things, e.g. sensors and very low power consumption objects. To allow these small objects access to network resources or to a slice of such …
The Analysis And Deployment Of A Fully Open Monitoring System In The Sri Lankan Deduroya Basin: The 4onse Project, Massimiliano Cannata, Daniele Strigaro, Imran Shahid, Rangajeewa Ratnayake, B.H. Sudantha
The Analysis And Deployment Of A Fully Open Monitoring System In The Sri Lankan Deduroya Basin: The 4onse Project, Massimiliano Cannata, Daniele Strigaro, Imran Shahid, Rangajeewa Ratnayake, B.H. Sudantha
Free and Open Source Software for Geospatial (FOSS4G) Conference Proceedings
The 4onse project studies non-conventional monitoring systems fully based on open technologies (hardware, standard protocols, software and data) for the management of resources and natural hazards in developing countries. After the design of hydro-meteorological stations and software for the collection, management and distribution of data, the study involves the installation of 30 stations in the Deduroya Oya river basin in Sri Lanka. The system will be analysed to fully understand the real cost of ownership, data quality and applicability in real situations. If properly validated, these systems can provide an alternative solution, effective and sustainable for the protection of property …

Free and Open Source Software for Geospatial (FOSS4G) Conference Proceedings
istSOS version 3 is a new full stack open source application framework that, implementing the Sensor Observation Service standard from the OGC and including some special features, offers the capability to manage and disseminate observation from sensors networks. istSOS3 has been redesigned with the mission to solve the problems of high loads environments and quality of service. After some recent researches that have shown that istSOS version 2 is not adequate to meet high demanding environment in terms of high concurrency, big data and performance, istSOS version 3 has been rewritten from ground up taking advantages from the latest technologies …

One of the most important Internet of Things applications is the wireless body sensor network (WBSN), which can provide universal health care, disease prevention, and control. Due to large deployments of small scale smart sensors in WBSNs, security, and privacy guarantees (e.g., security and safety-critical data, sensitive private information) are becoming a challenging issue because these sensor nodes communicate using an open channel, i.e., Internet. We implement data integrity (to resist against malicious tampering) using the secure hash algorithm 3 (SHA-3) when smart sensors in WBSNs communicate with each other using the Internet. Due to the limited resources (i.e., storage, …

A Simplified Secure Programming Platform For Internet Of Things Devices, Halim Burak Yesilyurt
FIU Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The emerging Internet of Things (IoT) revolution has introduced many useful applications that are utilized in our daily lives. Users can program these devices in order to develop their own IoT applications; however, the platforms and languages that are used during development are abounding, complicated, and time-consuming. The software solution provided in this thesis, PROVIZ+, is a secure sensor application development software suite that helps users create sophisticated and secure IoT applications with little software and hardware experience. Moreover, a simple and efficient domain-specific programming language, namely Panther language, was designed for IoT application development to unify existing programming languages. …

Recently, virtualization in wireless sensor networks (WSNs) has witnessed significant attention due to the growing service domain for IoT. Related literature on virtualization in WSNs explored resource optimization without considering communication failure in WSNs environments. The failure of a communication link in WSNs impacts many virtual networks running IoT services. In this context, this paper proposes a framework for optimizing fault tolerance in virtualization in WSNs, focusing on heterogeneous networks for service-oriented IoT applications. An optimization problem is formulated considering fault tolerance and communication delay as two conflicting objectives. An adapted non-dominated sorting based genetic algorithm (A-NSGA) is developed to …

Affective Computing For Emotion Detection Using Vision And Wearable Sensors, Alphonsus Keary
PhDs
The research explores the opportunities, challenges, limitations, and presents advancements in computing that relates to, arises from, or deliberately influences emotions (Picard, 1997). The field is referred to as Affective Computing (AC) and is expected to play a major role in the engineering and development of computationally and cognitively intelligent systems, processors and applications in the future. Today the field of AC is bolstered by the emergence of multiple sources of affective data and is fuelled on by developments under various Internet of Things (IoTs) projects and the fusion potential of multiple sensory affective data streams. The core focus of …

There has been significant research on the physiology of sweat in the past decade, with one of the main interests being the development of a real-time hydration monitor that utilizes sweat. The contents of sweat have been known for decades; sweat provides significant information on the physiological condition of the human body. However, it is important to know the sweat rate as well, as sweat rate alters the concentration of the sweat constituents, and ultimately affects the accuracy of hydration detection. Towards this goal, a calorimetric based flow-rate detection system was built and tested to determine sweat rate in real …

Asthma is a high-burden chronic inflammatory disease with prevalence in children with twice the rate compared to adults. It can be improved by continuously monitoring patients and their environment using the Internet of Things (IoT) based devices. These sensor data streams so obtained are essential to comprehend multiple factors triggering asthma symptoms. In order to support physicians in exploring causal associations and finding actionable insights, a visualization system with a scalable cloud infrastructure that can process multimodal sensor data and Patient Generated Health Data (PGHD) is necessary. In this thesis, we describe a cloud-based asthma management and visualization platform that …
