Self Consistent Bathymetric Mapping Using Sub-Maps: Survey Results From The Tag Hydrothermal Structure, C. Roman, R. Reves-Sohn, H. Singh, S. Humphris

Christopher N. Roman

The spatial resolution of microbathymetry maps created using robotic vehicles such as ROVs, AUVs and manned submersibles in the deep ocean is currently limited by the accuracy of the vehicle navigation data. Errors in the vehicle position estimate commonly exceed the ranging errors of the acoustic mapping sensor itself, which creates inconsistency in the map making process and produces artifacts that lower resolution and distort map integrity. We present a methodology for producing self-consistent maps and improving vehicle position estimation by exploiting accurate local navigation and utilizing terrain relative measurements. The complete map is broken down into individual "sub-maps'', which …

Water Intrusion In Base/Subgrade Materials At Bridge Ends, Priyantha Jayawickrama, Phil Nash, Michael Leaverton, Debakanta Mishra Sep 2005

Water Intrusion In Base/Subgrade Materials At Bridge Ends, Priyantha Jayawickrama, Phil Nash, Michael Leaverton, Debakanta Mishra

Debakanta Mishra

Departments of transportation spend considerable time and money repairing pavement failures that occur in the base or subgrade materials near bridge ends. Investigation of these failures often reveal saturated base/subgrade materials. The objectives of this research were to determine all possible sources for water intrusion, develop methods to recognize in-the-field causes of water collection at bridge approaches, and to develop new repair methods that can be economically implemented in the field to minimize water intrusion or remove water from soils.

Research focused on existing bridge approaches, concentrated on maintenance techniques to prevent water intrusion at bridge ends, and included an …

Improved Vehicle Based Multibeam Bathymetry Using Sub-Maps And Slam, Christopher Roman, Hanumant Singh Jul 2005

Improved Vehicle Based Multibeam Bathymetry Using Sub-Maps And Slam, Christopher Roman, Hanumant Singh

Christopher N. Roman

This paper presents an algorithm to improve sub-sea acoustic multibeam bottom mapping based on the simultaneous mapping and localization (SLAM) methodology. Multibeam bathymetry from underwater water vehicles can yield valuable large scale terrain maps of the sea door, but the overall accuracy of these maps is typically limited by the accuracy of the vehicle position estimates. The solution presented here uses small bathymetric patches created over short time scales in a sub-mapping context. These patches are registered with respect to one another and assembled in a single coordinate frame to produce a more accurate terrain estimate and provide improved renavigation …

A Minimal Model For The Helix-Coil Transition Of Worm-Like Polymers, Gustavo Carri Mar 2005

A Minimal Model For The Helix-Coil Transition Of Worm-Like Polymers, Gustavo Carri

Gustavo A. Carri

We present a geometric approach to the simulation of the Helix-Coil transition in wormlike polymers. In our model, the polymer is treated as a Freely Rotating Chain with hard-core repulsion between beads. The conformational state (helix or coil) of each bead is determined by the value of its torsion. If the difference between the torsion of a bead and the one of the perfect helix is less than a cutoff value, then the bead is part of a helical domain and carries a negative energy, otherwise it is part of a random coil. We have simulated these concepts using the …

Inkjet Printing Of Viable Mammalian Cells, Tao Xu, Joyce Jin, Cassie Gregory, Jay Hickman, Thomas Boland Dec 2004

Inkjet Printing Of Viable Mammalian Cells, Tao Xu, Joyce Jin, Cassie Gregory, Jay Hickman, Thomas Boland

Thomas Boland

The purpose of this study was to explore the use of a commercial thermal printer to deposit Chinese Hamster Ovary (CHO) and embryonic motoneuron cells into pre-defined patterns. These experiments were undertaken to verify the biocompatibility of thermal inkjet printing of mammalian cells and the ability to assemble them into viable constructs. Using a modified Hewlett Packard (HP) 550C computer printer and an HP 51626a ink cartridge, CHO cells and rat embryonic motoneurons were suspended separately in a concentrated phosphate buffered saline solution (3 x). The cells were subsequently printed as a kind of "ink" onto several "bio-papers" made from …
