Biotite-bearing, crystal-poor rhyolite magma was the predominant magma type discharged during the 1650 AD explosive eruption of Kolumbo submarine volcano, Greece. The eruption produced thick sequences of pumice deposits (~100 m) in the upper crater walls of the volcano, but also led to the formation of extensive pumice rafts that were dispersed throughout the southern Aegean Sea, and subaerial tephra fallout as far east as Turkey. Preliminary estimates of pre-eruption volatile contents have been determined using the volatile-by-difference method on plagioclase-hosted melt inclusions and yield an average value of 6.0 wt.%. This corresponds to a pre-eruption storage pressure of 180 …

Uv-Absorption Of Silica/Titania Colliods Using A Core-Shell Approach, Mark Soucek
Mark D. Soucek
Metal-oxo-colloids have been prepared using tetraethoxysilane (TEOS) oligomers with titanium tetra-i-propoxide (TIP) or titanium (di-i-propoxide) bis(acetylacetonate) (TIA) precursors. Transmission electron microscopy (TEM), FTIR, UV-Vis, and photoluminescence spectroscopy were used to investigate the composition, the size, and optical properties of the Si/Ti core–shell colloids. The presence of hetero-bonded silicate structure (Si–O–Ti) was indicated by FTIR spectroscopy. The size of Si/TIP system ranged from 55 to 120 nm and Si/TIA system ranged from 220 to 250 nm. The TEM data indicated that the size of colloids can be controlled by the TIP or TIA content. The Si/Ti system exhibited strong absorption in …

Particle Shape, Type And Amount Of Fines, And Moisture Affecting Resilient Modulus Behavior Of Unbound Aggregates, Debakanta Mishra, Erol Tutumluer, Yuanjie Xiao
Debakanta Mishra
This paper presents the application of Analysis of Variance (ANOVA) approach to study effects of different aggregate properties on the resilient modulus behavior of unbound aggregates. In a recent research project at the University of Illinois, stress-dependent resilient modulus characterization models, in the form proposed for use by the Mechanistic Empirical Pavement Design Guide (MEPDG), were established for three different aggregate types (dolomite, limestone, and uncrushed gravel) using a statistically well-formulated laboratory test matrix. Such a consistent database enabled the evaluation of the model parameter dependence on different aggregate properties, such as particle shape, type and amount of fines, and …

The Context Matters: Maritime Safety In The Vessel Traffic Service (Vts) Domain, Gesa Praetorius, Margareta Lützhöft, Karl Bruno
Gesa Praetorius
Vessel Traffic Service (VTS) is a service to the maritime community implemented to promote and improve maritime safety. In recent years VTS has become a topic of increased interest for maritime stakeholders and the general public. To derive insights on how maritime safety is constructed in the VTS domain this exploratory study was conducted. Four VTS centres were visited and 15 VTS operators were interviewed and observed at work. Further a focus group interview with 8 VTS operators with focus on decision support tools in the VTS domain was conducted. The results of the study indicate that VTS operators define …
