Engineering faculty members at Bucknell University have established a course required for freshman engineering students and open to liberal arts students. The course has been designed to stimulate and enhance student interest in all the engineering disciplines at Bucknell. The course ranges broadly across small groups, faculty-lead recitations, laboratory experiences, student design projects, traditional lectures, and guest speakers. The exploring engineering course has completed its second year. The authors describe the course, the changes made since the initial offering and the impact on the students and faculty involved. They also present and interpret student evaluations of the course.(4 refs)

An Integrated Environment For Filter Design, J.K Andersen, Maurice Aburdene Nov 2012

An Integrated Environment For Filter Design, J.K Andersen, Maurice Aburdene

Maurice Aburdene

Analog filters and direct digital filters are implemented using digital signal processing techniques. Specifically, Butterworth, Elliptic, and Chebyshev filters are implemented using the Motorola 56001 Digital Signal Processor by the integration of three software packages: MATLAB, C++, and Motorola's Application Development System. The integrated environment allows the novice user to design a filter automatically by specifying the filter order and critical frequencies, while permitting more experienced designers to take advantage of MATLAB's advanced design capabilities. This project bridges the gap between the theoretical results produced by MATLAB and the practicalities of implementing digital filters using the Motorola 56001 Digital Signal …

Wow! Linear Systems And Signal Processing Is Fun!, Maurice Aburdene, Kundan Nepal Nov 2012

Wow! Linear Systems And Signal Processing Is Fun!, Maurice Aburdene, Kundan Nepal

Maurice Aburdene

We describe a recent offering of a linear systems and signal processing course for third-year electrical and computer engineering students. This course is a pre-requisite for our first digital signal processing course. Students have traditionally viewed linear systems courses as mathematical and extremely difficult. Without compromising the rigor of the required concepts, we strived to make the course fun, with application-based hands-on laboratory projects. These projects can be modified easily to meet specific instructors' preferences. © 2011 IEEE.(17 refs)

Parallel Vector Processing Of Multidimensional Orthogonal Transforms For Digital Signal Processing Applications, M. El-Sharkawy, W. Tsang, Maurice Aburdene Nov 2012

Parallel Vector Processing Of Multidimensional Orthogonal Transforms For Digital Signal Processing Applications, M. El-Sharkawy, W. Tsang, Maurice Aburdene

Maurice Aburdene

The performance of the parallel vector implementation of the one- and two-dimensional orthogonal transforms is evaluated. The orthogonal transforms are computed using actual or modified fast Fourier transform (FFT) kernels. The factors considered in comparing the speed-up of these vectorized digital signal processing algorithms are discussed and it is shown that the traditional way of comparing th execution speed of digital signal processing algorithms by the ratios of the number of multiplications and additions is no longer effective for vector implementation; the structure of the algorithm must also be considered as a factor when comparing the execution speed of vectorized …

Dynamic Companion Harmonic Circuit Models For Analysis Of Power Systems With Embedded Power Electronics Devices, H. Garcia, M. Madrigal, B. Vyakaranam, Rick Rarick, F. Eugenio Villaseca Jul 2012

Dynamic Companion Harmonic Circuit Models For Analysis Of Power Systems With Embedded Power Electronics Devices, H. Garcia, M. Madrigal, B. Vyakaranam, Rick Rarick, F. Eugenio Villaseca

F. Eugenio Villaseca

In this paper a methodology that extends the dynamic harmonic domain (DHD) analysis of large networks is presented. The method combines DHD analysis and discrete companion circuit modeling resulting in a powerful analytic technique called dynamic companion harmonic circuit modeling. It provides for a complete dynamic harmonic analysis of the system while preserving the advantages of discrete companion circuit models. The methodology is illustrated by its application to a three-node power system, where reactive power compensation is achieved using a fixed-capacitor, thyristor-controlled reactor (FC-TCR) and its control system.

Biogeography-Based Optimization And The Solution Of The Power Flow Problem, Rick Rarick, Daniel J. Simon, F. Eugenio Villaseca, B. Vyakaranam Jul 2012

Biogeography-Based Optimization And The Solution Of The Power Flow Problem, Rick Rarick, Daniel J. Simon, F. Eugenio Villaseca, B. Vyakaranam

F. Eugenio Villaseca

Biogeography-based optimization (BBO) is a novel evolutionary algorithm that is based on the mathematics of biogeography. Biogeography is the study of the geographical distribution of biological organisms. In the BBO model, problem solutions are represented as islands, and the sharing of features between solutions is represented as immigration and emigration between the islands. This paper presents an application of the BBO algorithm to the power flow problem for an IEEE 30-bus test case system. The BBO solution is compared with the solution of the same problem using a genetic algorithm (GA). The results of Monte Carlo simulations indicate that the …

Low-Cost Stereo Vision On An Fpga, Chris A. Murphy, Daniel Lindquist, Ann Marie Rynning, Thomas Cecil, Sarah Leavitt, Mark L. Chang

Mark L. Chang

We present a low-cost stereo vision implementation suitable for use in autonomous vehicle applications and designed with agricultural applications in mind. This implementation utilizes the Census transform algorithm to calculate depth maps from a stereo pair of automotive-grade CMOS cameras. The final prototype utilizes commodity hardware, including a Xilinx Spartan-3 FPGA, to process 320times240 pixel images at greater than 150 frames per second and deliver them via a USB 2.0 interface.

Interactionless Calendar-Based Training For 802.11 Localization, Mark Chang, Andrew J. Barry, Noah L. Tye Jul 2012

Interactionless Calendar-Based Training For 802.11 Localization, Mark Chang, Andrew J. Barry, Noah L. Tye

Mark L. Chang

This paper presents our work in solving one of the weakest links in 802.11-based indoor-localization: the training of ground-truth received signal strength data. While crowdsourcing this information has been demonstrated to be a viable alternative to the time consuming and accuracy-limited process of manual training, one of the chief drawbacks is the rate at which a system can be trained. We demonstrate an approach that utilizes users' calendar and appointment information to perform interactionless training of an 802.11-based indoor localization system. Our system automatically determines if a user attended a calendar event, resulting in accuracy comparable to our previously published …

Evaluation And Design Optimization Of Piezoresistive Gauge Factor Of Thick-Film Resistors, Sherra E. Kerns, David V. Kerns, C Song, J. L. Davidson, W. P. Kang Apr 2012

Evaluation And Design Optimization Of Piezoresistive Gauge Factor Of Thick-Film Resistors, Sherra E. Kerns, David V. Kerns, C Song, J. L. Davidson, W. P. Kang

Sherra E. Kerns

On the basis of the analysis of all the thick- film design methodologies, the authors designed a test sample on which four different length-over-width ratios of resistors were designed. They found that the length-over-width ratio will substantially affect the gauge factor in some cases, in contrast to prior research. This can be modeled to generate a linear predictive model, The sensors designed on the insulator and the sensors underneath the insulator were also studied in order to simulate the multilayer hybrid technology and study the effects of insulator-resistor-substrate surface interaction. It is demonstrated that design techniques can affect the strain …

The Search For Design In Electrical Engineering Education, David V. Kerns, Sherra E. Kerns, Mark Somerville, Gill Pratt, Jill Crisman

Sherra E. Kerns

The importance of "design" in engineering education is well established and a cornerstone of most new engineering curricula as well as accreditation criteria Electrical and computer engineering (ECE) programs view many elements of design in ways similar to other engineering disciplines. However, in some respects other disciplines within engineering, such as Mechanical Engineering (ME), view design in broader terms, and perhaps gain value that electrical and computer engineering educators may miss. This paper describes how design is typically viewed in ECE programs, bow it's viewed in other engineering areas, particularly ME, and suggests some new possibilities for enhancing design education …

Measurement Of Metal Migration On Thick Film Piezoresistors And Their Termination, David V. Kerns, C Song, J L. Davidson, D L. Kinser Apr 2012

Measurement Of Metal Migration On Thick Film Piezoresistors And Their Termination, David V. Kerns, C Song, J L. Davidson, D L. Kinser

David V. Kerns

Metal migration from the thick-film termination can affect not only the electrical characteristics but also the gauge factor or piezoresistive coefficient of thick-film sensors. Four sets of sensors with different ratios were designed to test the influence of the terminal metal migration effects on the gauge factors and resistivity of thick-film resistors. In all the cases, the shortest resistors have a lower gauge factor and a large deviation ofresistances. The longer resistors will have better electrical parameters. SEM (scanning electron microscope) studies showed this interaction at the interface between the terminal and the resistor. The same distance of terminal diffusion …
