Symposium on Advanced Sensors and Modeling Techniques for Nuclear Reactor Safety

The study of accident tolerant fuels is ongoing at the Transient Reactor Test Facility (TREAT) at Idaho National Laboratory. The TREAT Facility provides quick, high-energy neutron pulses that simulate various accident conditions. These neutron pulses are presently detected using an array of fast-neutron detectors called Hornyak buttons. Hornyak buttons suffer from poor detection efficiency and significant Ĉerenkov radiation contamination in the signal. A new enabling technology, the micro-layered fast-neutron detector (MLFD), is presented to monitor neutron flux changes during mild-to-severe reactor accidents. The MLFD was designed to overcome the shortcomings of the Hornyak buttons and to improve detection efficiency. The …

At the University of Kentucky Center for Applied Energy Research, recent efforts have been made to optimize and reduce the cost of a unit designed to control an automated photobioreactor system in which microalgae is grown to reduce CO2 emissions. In contrast with a previously used system based on a compactRIO controller and NI LabVIEW software, a new optimized version utilizes an inexpensive Beagle Bone panel as a microcontroller that can be programmed through the use of Python software. Notably, the cost of the new control system was 1/10th of the price of the previous unit.

This is a current issue that society faces today because nonrenewable fossil fuels hurt the environment more than they help it. There are two components that make up a heterogeneous catalyst, a support and a reduced metal active phase. Electric propulsion (EP) has been gaining popularity due to the high efficiencies and specific impulse. These thrusters all follow the same general idea of converting stored electrical potential energy to kinetic energy for the craft; typically, this is accomplished by the acceleration of gas particles through three main methods, electrothermal, electromagnetic, and/or electrostatic. The specific impulse is the change of momentum per unit of propellant expended. While chemical propulsion produces a high change in momentum, they use much more propellant mass than an electric thruster. The development goal of Project Janus is to design, fabricate, and program two robotic heads that can serve as animatronic chatbots. Each robotic head will be equipped with two USB webcams, a mono speaker within the robot’s mouth, and a pair of microphones. Understanding magnetic properties of materials allows for advances in applications such as data storage. The Magneto-Optic Kerr Effect (MOKE) displays the reflective response a magnetic material has to a magnetic field. When polarized light reflects off of a magnetic material, the polarization orientation can change. The application of an external magnetic field can affect how much this polarization changes in a non-linear manner. Hysteresis loops are created when examining the relationship between intensity of the reflected light to the applied magnetic field provide information about magnetic properties of that material, such as the coercive field and field retention. The Airline Quality Rating (AQR) is the nation’s most comprehensive study of airline performance and quality for over two decades. The AQR sets the industry standard, providing consumers and industry watchers a way to compare performance quality among different US airlines using objective performance-based data (Bowen and Headley, 2014). The quantitative weighted average is computed monthly for every airline and divided by the sum of the weight to create the index. Falls are a persistent threat to longevity and quality of life, affecting 1/3 of older adults living in the community each year. There is strong evidence suggesting that a particular pattern within our walking reflects an ability to adapt to a continually changing environment. Specifically, the stride-to-stride patterns of healthy walking have a 1/f frequency spectrum. This has been observed to degrade to varying extents with aging and pathology.
