Determination Of The Lithium Ion Diffusion Coefficient In Graphite, Ping Yu, Branko Popov, James Ritter, Ralph White

A complex impedance model for spherical particles was used to determine the lithium ion diffusion coefficient in graphite as a function of the state of charge (SOC) and temperature. The values obtained range from of 1.12 × 10–10 to 6.51 × 10–11 cm2/s at 25°C for 0 and 30% SOC, respectively, and for 0% SOC, the value at 55°C was 1.35 × 10–10 cm2/s. The conventional potentiostatic intermittent titration technique (PITT) and Warburg impedance approaches were also evaluated, and the advantages and disadvantages of these techniques were exposed

High power-conversion efficiencies (PCEs) from polymer solar cells with a low-temperature-annealed sol–gel-derived molybdenum oxide (S-MoOx) thin film as a buffer layer demonstrate that the S-MoOx (i.e., solution-processed) thin film can serve as the hole extraction layer in polymer solar cells in the quest for high performance.

Simulated Effects Of Measurement Noise On Contact Measurements Between Rough And Smooth Surfaces, Caprice Gray, Robert White, Vincent Manno, Chris Rogers

To test the accuracy of optically measuring contact, we examined the height distribution histogram of a simulated rough surface contacting a smooth surface. We qualified the technique sensitivity as a function of the inverse signal-to-noise ratio having values ranging from 0 to 0.3. An explanation of how the analysis technique can be applied to Dual Emission Laser-Induced Fluorescence (DELIF) measurements is provided.

Ni₀.₂₃Fe₂.₇₇O₄ (NFO)/Pb(Zr,Ti)O₃ (PZT) multiferroic composites were synthesized by spin-spray deposition of NFO film onto PZT at 90°C. Strong interface adhesion between NFO and PZT was observed, which was verified by high resolution transmission electron microscopy indicating excellent wetting between the NFO and PZT, and by the strong magnetoelectric coupling in the NFO/PZT multiferroic composite showing an electric field induced remnant magnetization change of 10%. This strong interface adhesion and low-temperature spin-spray synthesis of multiferroic materials provide an alternative route for novel integrated multiferroic materials and devices.

Strong magnetoelectric (ME) coupling was demonstrated in Fe₃O₄/PZN–PT (lead zinc niobate–lead titanate) multiferroic heterostructures obtained through a sputter deposition process. The dependence of the magnetic anisotropy on the electric field (E-field) is theoretically predicted and experimentally observed by ferromagnetic resonance spectroscopy. A large tunable in-plane magnetic anisotropy of up to 600 Oe, and tunable out-of-plane anisotropy of up to 400 Oe were observed in the Fe₃O₄/PZN–PT multiferroic heterostructures, corresponding to a large ME coefficient of 100 Oe cm/kV in plane and 68 Oe cm/kV out of plane, which match well with predicted results. Fibrous materials have morphological similarities to natural cartilage extracellular matrix and have been considered as candidate for bone tissue engineering scaffolds. In this study, we have evaluated a novel electrospun chitosan mat composed of oriented sub-micron fibers for its tensile property and biocompatibility with chondrocytes (cell attachment, proliferation and viability). Scanning electronic microscope images showed the fibers in the electrospun chitosan mats were indeed aligned and there was a slight cross-linking between the parent fibers. The electrospun mats have significantly higher elastic modulus (2.25 MPa) than the cast films (1.19 MPa). Viability of cells on the electrospun mat was 69% …

Next generation magnetic microwave devices require ferrite films to be thick (>300 μm), self-biased (high remanent magnetization), and low loss in the microwave and millimeter wave bands. Here we examine recent advances in the processing of thick Ba-hexaferrite (M-type) films using pulsed laser deposition (PLD), liquid-phase epitaxy, and screen printing. These techniques are compared and contrasted as to their suitability for microwave materials processing and industrial production. Recent advances include the PLD growth of BaM on wide-band-gap semiconductor substrates and the development of thick, self-biased, low-loss BaM films by screen printing.

Under solar radiation, however, this approach does not receive adequate photons for catalyst activation, as the solar spectrum comprises mostly visible light (46%). In this study, we applied the dye-sensitization technique to prepare visible-light-active catalyst and used it under visible solar light generated from a solar simulator with a UV cutoff filter (λ > 420 nm) for phenol degradation. In the fluidised bed granulation process the effect of nozzle air pressure and binder spray rate on key aggregate quality attributes were studied. The experimental results show that a decrease in nozzle air pressure leads to larger mean granule size. The combination of lowest nozzle air pressure and lowest binder spray rate results in granules with the highest levels of hardness and crispness. The combination of low nozzle air pressure and low binder spray rate results in the least distribution span. Granola hardness was affected by nozzle air pressure.
