Computational Fluid Dynamics Visualization For Unmanned Aerial Systems In Bridge Inspections, Kristoffer B. Borgen, John Mott Jul 2024

Computational Fluid Dynamics Visualization For Unmanned Aerial Systems In Bridge Inspections, Kristoffer B. Borgen, John Mott

Journal of Aviation Technology and Engineering

Bridge inspections are an expensive and time-consuming process, varying significantly with a bridge’s style, height, width, and length. Inspections create interruptions that interfere with bridge use, as the examination requires partial or total closure, causing traffic delays. Unmanned aerial system (UAS) use has increased significantly over the past decade, including assistance and coordination during bridge inspections. However, the impact on a UAS from high winds and turbulent airflows induced by a bridge’s structure can decrease flight safety during inspections. Visualization of these hazards is difficult for UAS operators; therefore, a process to estimate the velocity and locations of these hazardous …

104. I-69 Orx Section 3: Completing The Connection, Steven Nicaise

Purdue Road School

The I-69 Ohio River Crossing (ORX) will be a key, final connection of I-69 between Evansville, Indiana and Henderson, Kentucky. The transformational project includes three contracts, two states and one much-anticipated new river crossing. In this session, you will hear an update on the ORX project as a whole and learn about I-69 ORX Section 3.

Confessions Of A Former Vision Zero Coordinator, Maria Cantrell Mar 2024

Confessions Of A Former Vision Zero Coordinator, Maria Cantrell

Purdue Road School

Maria Cantrell, P.E. served as the City of Columbus Vision Zero Coordinator from 2019 to 2023. She lead the development of the City’s multiagency plan and program intended to eliminate fatal and serious injury crashes. Learn about what efforts and strategies worked, what didn’t, and a few pointers picked up along the way.

Work Zone Safety Fundamentals And Best Practices, Mischa Kachler Mar 2024

Work Zone Safety Fundamentals And Best Practices, Mischa Kachler

Purdue Road School

Join us for a discussion of fundamental principles and best practices of temporary traffic control (TTC) that promote work zone safety. This session will cover topics that designers should know and consider when developing TTC plans. Attendees who will most benefit from this session are designers new to TTC and experienced designers looking for a refresher.

Purple Line Bus Rapid Transit Project Overview, Michael Schneider, Rachel Wilson Mar 2024

Purple Line Bus Rapid Transit Project Overview, Michael Schneider, Rachel Wilson

Purdue Road School

The Purple Line will be Indianapolis’ second Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) Line, opening for revenue service in the fall of 2024. It will provide rapid transit service along 15.2 miles of E. 38th Street and Post Road, between Indianapolis and Lawrence, for a total cost of $188 million. This presentation will provide an overview of IndyGo’s overall capital program with a focus on the Purple Line project—its unique design features and successful project delivery—from design through construction.

Indiana Design Manual Chapter 46 Updates, Nathaniel Shellhamer, Taylor Ruble Mar 2024

Indiana Design Manual Chapter 46 Updates, Nathaniel Shellhamer, Taylor Ruble

Purdue Road School

INDOT is working on a total revision of Chapter 46 “Intersections at Grade” of the Indiana Design Manual (IDM). These revisions address numerous longstanding concerns with the way intersections are designed in Indiana and also contribute design information for alternative intersections.

Demystifying Utility Coordination: Understanding The Basics, Josshe I. Palm Mar 2024

Demystifying Utility Coordination: Understanding The Basics, Josshe I. Palm

Purdue Road School

This session will explain utility coordination to non-utility coordinators. It will help educate others about the role and responsibilities of a utility coordinator, an OSA, easy UC and design mistakes to avoid, scope and design considerations, items commonly overlooked, when to coordinate SUE, and how to work with your UC to request a letting adjustment. We will also highlight UC submittals and allow time for questions about the UC’s role in a project’s success.

Demystifying Traffic Engineering For The Rest Of Us, Nathaniel Shellhamer, David Reamer Mar 2024

Demystifying Traffic Engineering For The Rest Of Us, Nathaniel Shellhamer, David Reamer

Purdue Road School

Have you ever uttered the phrase “I’m not a traffic engineer”? When traffic engineers go off on a tangent, can it start to sound like a foreign language? This session is for you! We will break down traffic engineering concepts, such as innovative intersections, traffic analysis buzzwords and acronyms, and more. This session will be geared towards non-traffic engineers and anyone else who might explain these concepts to the traveling public.

Analyzing Video And Isobus Data To Understand Risk And Safety Practices For Roadside Mowing, Nathan Sprague, Timothy Wiegman, J. T. Evans Mar 2024

Analyzing Video And Isobus Data To Understand Risk And Safety Practices For Roadside Mowing, Nathan Sprague, Timothy Wiegman, J. T. Evans

Graduate Industrial Research Symposium

In Indiana, roadside mowing covers 11,200 miles, presenting significant risks. The Indiana Department of Transportation (INDOT) seeks safer methods, including automated evaluations and autonomous robots. Analyzing 120 hours of video and ISOBUS data, we quantify mower interactions with the road and obstacles, finding mowers on -road up to 91% of the time in rural areas and 57% on highways. Key obstacles identified include signs and posts. This research aids in developing risk assessment models and safety evaluations, aiming to improve mowing safety and efficiency, and it supports future development of autonomous mowing technologies.
