Network Effects In Action, Christopher S. Yoo Nov 2020

Network Effects In Action, Christopher S. Yoo

All Faculty Scholarship

This Chapter begins by examining and exploring the theoretical and empirical limits of the possible bases of network effects, paying particular attention to the most commonly cited framework known as Metcalfe’s Law. It continues by exploring the concept of network externalities, defined as the positive external consumption benefits that the decision to join a network creates for the other members of the network, which is more ambiguous than commonly realized. It then reviews the structural factors needed for models based on network effects to have anticompetitive effects and identifies other factors that can dissipate those effects. Finally, it identifies alternative …

The Influence Of Information Technology Governance Audit Using Cobit 5 For The Development Public Library : (Case Study : Public Library In East Java ), Ilham M, Anis Eliyana, Indrianawati Usman

Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)

This study current technological developments have entered almost into the lines of people's lives. Currently, many public library have grown even bigger. And this development does not escape the good management of information technology governance. To maximize management to a better level, public library need information technology governance audits. The information technology audit used in this study uses the COBIT 5 framework which focuses on the APO04 and DSS01 domains. This study aims to improve the quality of services owned and to increase its competitiveness. The results of this study refer to the vision and mission of the public library …

Knowledge Based View Of University Tech Transfer—A Systematic Literature Review And Meta-Analysis, Clovia Hamilton, Philbin P. Simon Sep 2020

Knowledge Based View Of University Tech Transfer—A Systematic Literature Review And Meta-Analysis, Clovia Hamilton, Philbin P. Simon

Technology & Society Faculty Publications

Research and technology commercialization at research-intensive universities has helped to develop provincial economies resulting in university startups, the growth of other new companies and associated employment. University technology transfer offices (TTOs) oversee the process of technology transfer into the commercial marketplace and these organizational units can be considered in the context of enabling effective knowledge management. However, what enables productive TTO performance has not been comprehensively researched. Therefore, this research study adopted the knowledge-based view as the theoretical construct to support a comprehensive investigation into this area. This was achieved through employing a systematic literature review (SLR) combined with a …

Tech Policy And Legal Theory Syllabus, Yafit Lev-Aretz, Nizan Packin

Open Educational Resources

Technology has changed dramatically over the last couple of decades. Currently, virtually all business industries are powered by large quantities of data. The potential as well as actual uses of business data, which oftentimes includes personal user data, raise complex issues of informed consent and data protection. This course will explore many of these complex issues, with the goal of guiding students into thinking about tech policy from a broad ethical perspective as well as preparing students to responsibly conduct themselves in different areas and industries in a world growingly dominated by technology.

Industry 4.0 is the latest stage in the Industrial Revolution and is reflected in the digital transformation and use of emergent technologies including the Internet of Things, Big Data, Robotic automation of processes, 3D printing and additive manufacturing, drones and Artificial Intelligence (AI) in the manufacturing industry. The implementation of these technologies in the Shipbuilding and Ship Repair Industry is currently in a nascent stage. Considering this, there is huge potential to increase cost savings, decrease production timelines, and drive down inefficiencies in Lifecyle management of ships. However, the implementation of these Industry 4.0 technologies is hindered by a noticeable …

Congressional Committee Resources On Space Policy During The 115th Congress (2017-2018): Providing Context And Insight Into Us Government Space Policy, Bert Chapman May 2020

Congressional Committee Resources On Space Policy During The 115th Congress (2017-2018): Providing Context And Insight Into Us Government Space Policy, Bert Chapman

Libraries Faculty and Staff Presentations

Article 1 of the US Constitution assigns the US Congress numerous responsibilities. These include creating new laws, revising existing laws, funding government programs, and conducting oversight of these programs' performance. Oversight of US Government agency space policy programs is executed by various congressional space policy committees including the House and Senate Science Committees, Armed Services, and Appropriations Committees. These committees conduct many public hearings on space policy, which invite expert witnesses to testify on US space policy programs and feature debate on the strengths and weaknesses of these programs. Documentation produced by these committees is widely available to the public, …

A Sample Weight And Adaboost Cnn-Based Coarse To Fine Classification Of Fruit And Vegetables At A Supermarket Self-Checkout, Khurram Hameed, Douglas Chai, Alexander Rassau Jan 2020

A Sample Weight And Adaboost Cnn-Based Coarse To Fine Classification Of Fruit And Vegetables At A Supermarket Self-Checkout, Khurram Hameed, Douglas Chai, Alexander Rassau

Research outputs 2014 to 2021

© 2020 by the authors. Licensee MDPI, Basel, Switzerland. The physical features of fruit and vegetables make the task of vision-based classification of fruit and vegetables challenging. The classification of fruit and vegetables at a supermarket self-checkout poses even more challenges due to variable lighting conditions and human factors arising from customer interactions with the system along with the challenges associated with the colour, texture, shape, and size of a fruit or vegetable. Considering this complex application, we have proposed a progressive coarse to fine classification technique to classify fruit and vegetables at supermarket checkouts. The image and weight of …

Our paper was inspired by the recent Society 5.0 initiative of the Japanese Government that seeks to create a sustainable human-centric society by putting to work recent advances in technology: sensor networks, edge computing, IoT ecosystems, AI, Big Data, robotics, to name just a few. The main contribution of this work is a vision of how these technological advances can contribute, directly or indirectly, to making Society 5.0 reality. For this purpose we build on a recently-proposed concept of Marketplace of Services that, in our view, will turn out to be one of the cornerstones of Society 5.0. Instead of …

Connecting Offshore Floating Wind To The Western Electricity Grid: Transmission Options Decision Modeling, Bill Henry Jan 2020

Connecting Offshore Floating Wind To The Western Electricity Grid: Transmission Options Decision Modeling, Bill Henry

Engineering and Technology Management Student Projects

The purpose of this project is to obtain stakeholder views on a range of aspects relating to a proactive planning process to build transmission facilities in coordination with development of floating offshore wind (OSW) in southern Oregon and northern California. In the event that a transmission planning process to examine the potential need to assess and build transmission facilities to connect these wind resource areas is launched at a future date, the results of this study will assist planners by obtaining initial stakeholder views on the breadth of choices that should be considered, and more importantly, provide key insights on …

A Review Of Problem Structuring Methods For Consideration In Prognostics And Smart Manufacturing, Patrick T. Hester, Andrew J. Collins, Barry Ezell, John Horst Jan 2020

A Review Of Problem Structuring Methods For Consideration In Prognostics And Smart Manufacturing, Patrick T. Hester, Andrew J. Collins, Barry Ezell, John Horst

Engineering Management & Systems Engineering Faculty Publications

Successful use of prognostics involves the prediction of future system behaviors in an effort to maintain system availability and reduce the cost of maintenance and repairs. Recent work by the National Institute of Standards and Technology indicates that the field of prognostics and health management is vital for remaining competitive in today’s manufacturing environment. While prognostics-based maintenance involves many traditional operations research-centric challenges for successful deployment such as limited availability of information and concerns regarding computational efficiency, the authors argue in this paper that the field of prognostics and health management, still in its embryonic development stage, could benefit greatly …
