Group communication is a useful mechanism guaranteeing consistency among replicated objects. The existing approaches do not allow transparent plug-in of group communication protocols into CORBA. They either require modification of CORBA or OS, or provide no room for incorporating group communication transport protocols into CORBA. We thus propose a generic group communication framework that allows transparent plug-in of various group communication protocols with no modification of existing CORBA. We extend the open communications interface (OCI) to support interoperability, reusability of existing group communication, and independency on ORB and OS. Coherent M-ary amplitude-shift keying (MASK) is proposed for use in orthogonal frequency-division multiplexing (OFDM) systems. The frequency separation between subcarriers is only 1/2T instead of 1/T. With a slightly wider bandwidth, an √M-ary ASK OFDM can achieve the same bit-error rate (BER) of M-ary quadrature amplitude modulation (QAM) OFDM and a better BER than that of M-ary phase-shift keying (MPSK) OFDM. The √M-ary ASK OFDM has the same peak-to-average-power ratio as that of the M-ary QAM OFDM. The MASK OFDM can be implemented digitally and efficiently by fast cosine transform and demodulated by inverse fast cosine transform. Comparisons show that …

Recently, uniform plane wave propagation across a nonchiral-chiral interface was examined via the development of appropriate Fresnel coefficients. In this extension, propagation of focused uniform and profiled beams through a finite, planar nonreciprocal chiral slab is investigated using complex Fresnel coefficients via angular plane wave decomposition and dual transforms.

Once radioactive waste is emplaced in the repository, the challenge of monitoring the continued integrity of the excavated openings (e.g., emplacement drifts) escalates tremendously. We envision a seismic monitoring array installed on the surface at Yucca Mountain, which operates automatically to monitor repository opening stability in the long term. The objective is to monitor and validate the structural integrity of the emplacement drifts through identifying and localizing rock falls that could compromise drift access, hinder waste retrievability, and potentially reduce the effective life of waste canisters. The problem of EM wave propagation in non-reciprocal chiral media has been studied by several investigators. In a recent approach, a dual-transform technique has been developed to study the problem of such propagation under paraxial and slow-envelope variation conditions.
In this paper, we first outline some of the results obtained using the dual transform technique for arbitrary boundary conditions within the left boundary of a semi-infinite, non-reciprocal chiral medium for a uniform plane wave, and a fundamental Gaussian-profiled beam. High-speed broadband digital communication networks rely on digital multiplexing technology where clock synchronization, including processing, transmission, and recovery of the clock, is the critical technique. This paper interprets the process of clock synchronization in multiplexing systems as quantizing and coding the information of clock synchronization, interprets clock justification as timing sigma-delta modulation (TΔ-ΣM), and interprets the jitter of justification as quantization error. As a result, decreasing the quantization error is equivalent to decreasing the jitter of justification. We report the results of a pilot study that compared the computer self-efficacy construct with metacognition. While self-efficacy is primarily affective and refers to one’s beliefs about one’s ability to perform a task, metacognition is primarily cognitive and refers to one’s thoughts about one’s ability to perform a task. Given their similarity, both have been used as surrogate measures of knowledge or skill. We developed an instrument to measure both constructs and applied the instrument to a set of MIS students taking an Analysis and Design course. We introduce the Logic Foundry, a system for the rapid creation and integration of FPGA-based digital signal processing systems. Recognizing that some of the greatest challenges in creating FPGA-based systems occur in the integration of the various components, we have proposed a system that targets the following four areas of integration: design flow integration, component integration, platform integration, and software integration. Using the Logic Foundry, a system can be easily specified, and then automatically constructed and integrated with system level software.

Latent Semantic Analysis (LSA) is a matching technique capable of recognizing the semantic relationships of data that ordinary techniques such as string matching cannot. This is especially valuable for data integration applications, like those of Acxiom, where data items are usually related by context, rather than in a literal match. Even though it has been shown that LSA is 30% more effective in finding and ranking relevant pieces of information than existing string-by-string matching techniques (Deerwester et al., 1990; Dumais, 1995), the performance of the LSA seems to be affected by the presence of shared words, or “noise”, in data. …
