Damage Assessment In Aging Structures Using Augmented Reality, Omar Zuhair Awadallah, Ayan Sadhu

Undergraduate Student Research Internships Conference

Structural Health Monitoring (SHM) is the assessment of bridges and observation of data regarding these bridges over time to monitor their evolution and detect the presence of any possible damages. However, existing methods to perform structural inspections in bridges are high in cost, time-consuming and risky. Inspectors use expensive equipment to reach a certain area of the bridge to inspect it, and at different heights, this can pose a risk to the inspector’s safety. This study aims to find cheaper, faster, and safer ways to perform structural inspections using augmented reality and artificial intelligence. The developed system uses a machine …

Application Of Acoustic Emission Technology In Monitoring Corrosion Induced Expansion Cracks Of Reinforced Concrete, Zhen Zeng, Gang Xu, Rui Zhang, Zewen Yang

International Conference on Durability of Concrete Structures

Acoustic emission (AE) technology is used to monitor the whole process of reinforced concrete rust expanding and cracking, and the accuracy of AE technology to distinguish the location and type of cracks in concrete rust expanding and cracking is studied and verified. The results show that the protective layer is accompanied by a large number of acoustic emission signals in the process of rust expansion and cracking, Moment tensor inversion can more accurately identify crack sources such as shear source, tensile source and mixed source; In the process of corrosion-induced expansion cracking, shear source cracks appear before tensile source cracks …

Cost-Efficient Bridge Scour Health Monitoring Using Commercial Sensors, Connor Embleau, Tien Yee, Metin Oguzmert, Mahyar Amirgholy, Alan Akazemi, Dale Goff

Symposium of Student Scholars

Bridge scouring has been a major international issue regarding bridge health and the overall longevity of a bridge. A common bridge health concern such as scouring accounts for close to 60% of bridge failures in the United States and is a leading cause to a bridge being in critical condition. Traditional methods to combat this failure is to measure the scour depth to assess a bridge health. Due to safety concerns of the traditional method, this study proposes to monitor a bridge’s health using a vibration-based technique. At present, vibration-based techniques have yet to be utilized reliably in the field. …
