Comparison Of Scaling Performance Between Sidewalks Placed Using Hot And Cold Weather Concreting Procedures, Likhitha Rudraraju

This study investigates the performance of concrete sidewalks placed using hot and cold weather concreting practices. The effect that curing methods, types of deicers, and supplementary cementitious material content have on the scaling resistance of concrete is examined in the laboratory and the field. After one winter, petrographic analysis was conducted on the cores from the sidewalk panels.

The results from field evaluation indicate that the concrete sidewalks placed using hot weather concreting showed better resistance against scaling than those placed using cold weather concreting. The results also suggest that the effect of curing method depends on the concreting procedure …

One of the most crucial research areas in wind engineering is tornadoes due to the widespread damages to infrastructure and the environment in North America and other parts of the world. The proper scaling of tornadoes in experimental facilities, generating tornado-like vortices (TLVs) is, therefore, an essential part of evaluating tornado-indued damages on engineered buildings. “Over the past 60 years, pumping concrete has gained popularity due to the economic and technical benefits that typically accompanies it. However, boom configuration and flow rate can adversely affect freeze-thaw and scaling resistance of concrete due to the effects of pressure on the air-void system. The current generation wind turbines are upscaled into multi megawatt range in terms of output power. However, the energy benefit from the turbine is offset by the increased mass and cost. Twenty MW wind turbines are now feasible with rotor diameters up to 200 m, according to a new report from the EU-funded UpWind project in 2011.
