Nonlinear Fastener-Based Modeling Of Cold-Formed Steel Shear Walls Under Lateral Loads, Fani Derveni Jan 2019

Nonlinear Fastener-Based Modeling Of Cold-Formed Steel Shear Walls Under Lateral Loads, Fani Derveni

Structural Engineering Masters Projects

As cold-formed steel (CFS) has increasingly been used in low- and mid-rise construction across United States, it becomes necessary to capture and evaluate its lateral response in both, sub-system/member level and system level. The main lateral resisting system in cold-formed steel construction is shear walls; shear walls are the focus of this work. In particular, the present study aims to shed light on the response of wood sheathed coldformed steel (CFS) shear walls exposed to earthquake events through nonlinear high fidelity fastener-based modeling. The numerical approach is fastener-oriented including nonlinear experimental-determined connector elements for steel-to-sheathing connections, orthotropic oriented strand board …

This paper presents research focused on understanding the observed behavior of cold-formed steel (CFS) metal buildings during Hurricane Harvey, which made landfall Friday, August 25, 2017 between Port Aransas and Port O’Connor, Texas. Through the Geotechnical Extreme Event Reconnaissance (GEER) association (funded by the National Science Foundation) a team of structural engineers and researchers performed rapid and detailed assessments of structural damage caused by the hurricane. The National Science Foundation gathered photographs, damage assessments sheets, and three-dimensional laser point cloud data of severely damaged cold-formed steel industrial buildings. The Port Aransas County Airport experienced severe damage to several cold-formed steel …

Failure Of Cold-Formed Steel Beams During Concrete Placement, Norbert Delatte May 2005

Failure Of Cold-Formed Steel Beams During Concrete Placement, Norbert Delatte

Civil and Environmental Engineering Faculty Publications

During a concrete placement on the second story of a building under construction, the supporting cold-formed steel beams collapsed. Four workers were injured. The collapse occurred while concrete was being placed onto steel decking on the second floor of the structure. Cold-formed steel beams, without shoring, supported the steel decking. Analysis of the steel beams under the weight of concrete and workers using the applicable American Concrete Institute and American Iron and Steel Institute documents indicated that the beams were overstressed for construction loads. After the collapse, part of the structure was rebuilt using thicker beams. For the reconstruction, the …
