Behavior Of Larger-Diameter Strands In The Disturbed Region Of Prestressed Concrete Girders, John Verlin Cabage Jr. Dec 2014

Behavior Of Larger-Diameter Strands In The Disturbed Region Of Prestressed Concrete Girders, John Verlin Cabage Jr.

Doctoral Dissertations

Traditionally, the Tennessee Department of Transportation has been using American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials – Prestressed/Precast Concrete Institute Bulb Tee (AASHTO-PCI BT) sections for its prestressed concrete bridges. These sections have limited bottom flange widths where the prestressing strands are located. To increase span capacities of these sections, other States have adopted new sections with a wider flange width. Producers in Tennessee have raised concerns about the cost of the new steel forms to accommodate these new sections. As an alternative, this research examines the use of larger diameter strand in conjunction with high-strength concrete and standard …

Behavior Of Externally Fiber-Reinforced Polymer Reinforced Shrinkage-Compensating Concrete Beams, Qi Cao Aug 2011

Behavior Of Externally Fiber-Reinforced Polymer Reinforced Shrinkage-Compensating Concrete Beams, Qi Cao

Doctoral Dissertations

The major cause of cracking in bridge decks, concrete pavements, as well as slabs on grade, is restrained shrinkage of the concrete. The resulting steel corrosion problem causes tremendous increase of maintenance and replacement cost. Shrinkage-compensating concrete (SHCC) and fiber-reinforced polymer (FRP) are explored to develop a hybrid slab system as one possible method of delaying the cracking and eliminating corrosion. To achieve the objective, a hybrid FRP reinforced SHCC structural system was developmed, and short-term and long-term behavior of this hybrid FRP-SHCC beams were investigated in this dissertation.

In the first-stage development, a series of “coffee can” tests were …
