Linear Regression Models For Prediction Of Annual Heating And Cooling Demand In Representative Australian Residential Dwellings, Navid Aghdaei, Georgios Kokogiannakis, Daniel J. Daly, Timothy J. Mccarthy

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part B

This paper presents the development methodology of linear regression models that were developed for the prediction of annual thermal loads in representative residential buildings across three major climates in New South Wales, Australia, and the assessment of the impact of building envelope upgrades. A differential sensitivity analysis was undertaken for sixteen building envelope parameters, with six parameters being identified as significant. These six parameters were then explored using EnergyPlus simulation, and a number of linear regression models developed from the simulation outputs. Random values for design parameters were generated, and the results of EnergyPlus simulations using these parameters were used …

Modified Centrifugal Technique For Determining Polymer Demand And Achievable Dry Solids Content In The Dewatering Of Anaerobically Digested Sludge, Vu Hien Phuong To, Tien Vinh Nguyen, Saravanamuthu Vigneswaran, Long D. Nghiem, Sudhir Murthy, Heriberto A. Bustamante, Matthew Higgins

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A

This study aims to characterize anaerobically digested sludge (ADS) and correlate the sludge characteristics in terms of soluble organic compounds with polymer demand (PD) during sludge conditioning. The PD required to achieve maximum dewatering of the ADS studied is in the range of 8-10 kg polymer/dry ton. The commonly used capillary suction time parameter to evaluate the solid-liquid separation ability was not a reliable indicator for assessing dewatering. Instead, in this study, a modified centrifugal technique proposed by Higgins (Higgins MCT) was used to assess the maximum achievable dry solids content of the biosolids cake. The Higgins MCT is readily …

Innovations in Managing Western Water: New Approaches for Balancing Environmental, Social and Economic Outcomes (Martz Summer Conference, June 11-12)

Many aspects of western water allocation and management are the product of independent and uncoordinated actions, several occurring a century or more ago. However, in this modern era of water scarcity, it is increasingly acknowledged that more coordinated and deliberate decision-making is necessary for effectively balancing environmental, social, and economic objectives. In recent years, a variety of forums, processes, and tools have emerged to better manage the connections between regions, sectors, and publics linked by shared water systems. In this event, we explore the cutting edge efforts, the latest points of contention, and the opportunities for further progress.

Vehicle Routing Problem With Stochastic Demand (Vrpsd): Optimisation By Neighbourhood Search Embedded Adaptive Ant Algorithm (Ns-Aaa), M Nagalakshmi, Mukul Tripathi, Nagesh Shukla, Manoj Tiwari

Nagesh Shukla

Taking into account the real world applications, this paper considers a vehicle routing problem with stochastic demand (VRPSD) in which the customer demand has been modelled as a stochastic variable. Considering the computational complexity of the problem and to enhance the algorithm performance, a neighbourhood search embedded adaptive ant algorithm (ns-AAA) is proposed as an improvement to the existing ant colony optimisation. The proposed metaheuristic adapts itself to maintain an adequate balance between exploitation and exploration throughout the run of the algorithm. The performance of the proposed methodology is benchmarked against a set of test instances that were generated using …

Multi-Period Liner Ship Fleet Planning With Dependent Uncertain Container Shipment Demand, Qiang Meng, Tingsong Wang, Shuaian Wang

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A

This paper deals with a realistic multi-period liner ship fleet planning problem by incorporating stochastic dependency of the random and period-dependent container shipment demand. This problem is formulated as a multi-period stochastic programming model with a sequence of interrelated two-stage stochastic programming (2SSP) problems characterized ship fleet planning in each single period. A solution method integrating dual decomposition and Lagrangian relaxation method is designed for solving the developed model. Numerical experiments are carried out to assess applicability and performance of the proposed model and solution algorithm. The results further demonstrate importance of stochastic dependence of the uncertain container shipment demand.

Transmob: An Agent Based Simulation Of Transport Demand And Residential Mobility In South East Sydney, Pascal Perez, Nam N. Huynh, Vu Lam Cao, Rohan Wickramasuriya, Matthew J. Berryman

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A

This paper presents an agent-based simulation, called TransMob, of transport demand and residential mobility in South East Sydney, Australia. In this model, each agent represents an individual resident of the study area. Each agent is given an initial travel diary. Agents are grouped in various types of household which generate social interdependencies and additional constrains on travel diaries. This initial synthetic population is then allowed to evolve for 20 years, driven by natural growth parameters, social bonding and migration rates. A micro-simulation component calculates daily traffic conditions and individual travel times, allowing for multi-modal journeys. The transport mode choice component …

Global Optimization Method For Robust Pricing Of Transportation Networks Under Uncertain Demand, Shuaian Wang, Lauren Gardner, S.Travis Waller Jan 2014

Global Optimization Method For Robust Pricing Of Transportation Networks Under Uncertain Demand, Shuaian Wang, Lauren Gardner, S.Travis Waller

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A

We extend the existing toll pricing studies with fixed demand to stochastic demand. A new and practical second-best pricing problem with uncertain demand is proposed and formulated as a stochastic mathematical program with equilibrium constraints. In view of the problem structure, we develop a tailored global optimization algorithm. This algorithm incorporates a sample average approximation scheme, a relaxation-strengthening method, and a linearization approach. The proposed global optimization algorithm is applied to three networks: a two-link network, a seven-eleven network and the Sioux-Falls network. The results demonstrate that using a single fixed estimation of future demand may overestimate the future system …

Co-Digestion Of Sewage Sludge And Crude Glycerol For On-Demand Biogas Production, Long Nghiem, Thanh Nguyen, Patric Manassa, Shona K. Fitzgerald, Marcia Dawson, Sarah Vierboom Jan 2014

Co-Digestion Of Sewage Sludge And Crude Glycerol For On-Demand Biogas Production, Long Nghiem, Thanh Nguyen, Patric Manassa, Shona K. Fitzgerald, Marcia Dawson, Sarah Vierboom

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A

Pilot scale experiments, biomethane potential (BMP) evaluation, and BioWin simulations were conducted to evaluate the intermittent co-digestion of sewage sludge and crude glycerol for on-demand biogas production. BMP tests revealed that both pure and crude glycerols were readily biodegradable. BioWin simulations showed that intermittent glycerol injection at a high (3% v/v) dose might lead to an increase in chemical oxygen demand of the digestate. Results from the pilot scale experiments confirmed that intermittent injection of crude glycerol at both low (0.63% v/v) and high (3%v/v) doses could be used for on-demand biogas production to match the daily fluctuation in energy …

Asymmetric Stochastic User Equilibrium Problem With Elastic Demand And Link Capacity Constraints, Qiang Meng, Zhiyuan Liu, Shuaian Wang Jan 2014

Asymmetric Stochastic User Equilibrium Problem With Elastic Demand And Link Capacity Constraints, Qiang Meng, Zhiyuan Liu, Shuaian Wang

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A

This paper focuses on model development and algorithm design for the general stochastic user equilibrium (SUE) problem with elastic demand, asymmetric link travel time functions and link capacity constraints. It first defines the generalised SUE conditions using generalised link travel time. An equivalent variational inequality (VI) model for these generalised SUE conditions is then developed and it is rigorously proven to be monotone and uniform Lipschitzcontinuous. These two properties of the proposed VI model ensure the global convergence of the self-adaptive prediction–correction algorithm incorporating cost averaging method as a solution algorithm. Finally, a numerical example is utilised to assess the …

Assessing The Influence Of Climatic Variables On Electricity Demand, Dao Hoang Vu, Kashem M. Muttaqi, Ashish P. Agalgaonkar Jan 2014

Assessing The Influence Of Climatic Variables On Electricity Demand, Dao Hoang Vu, Kashem M. Muttaqi, Ashish P. Agalgaonkar

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A

The electricity demand is significantly dependent on the weather information. Such weather information is comprised of different climatic variables such as temperature, humidity, wind speed, evaporation, rain fall and solar exposure which constantly change. Therefore, analysing the impacts of these variables on demand is necessary for predicting the future change in demand. In this paper, the cooling and heating degree days are utilised to capture the relationship between the per capita demand to temperature, which is one of the key climatic variables. In addition, Pearson correlation analysis has been employed to investigate the interdependency between different climatic variables and electricity …

Agent-Based Demand Management In A Power Distribution Network By Considering Distributed Generations, Fenghui Ren, Minjie Zhang, Danny Soetanto

Dr Fenghui Ren

A distribution network carries electricity from transmission network to consumers through facilities such as substations, buses and feeders. Distributed generations emerge as the new alternative power resource to a distribution network at a smaller and distributed scale. On one hand, distributed generations can decrease substations' load and power price. On the other hand, they will bring difficulties to substations for demand management. This paper proposes a multiagent model to represent a radial distribution network. The model includes five types of agents, which are substation agents, bus agents, feeder agents, load agents and generation agents. Through communicating with neighbouring agents, each …

Liner Shipping Fleet Deployment With Cargo Transshipment And Demand Uncertainty, S Wang, Q Meng Jan 2010

Liner Shipping Fleet Deployment With Cargo Transshipment And Demand Uncertainty, S Wang, Q Meng

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A

This paper addresses a novel liner shipping fleet deployment problem characterized by cargo transshipment, multiple container routing options and uncertain demand, with the objective of maximizing the expected profit. This problem is formulated as a stochastic program and solved by the sample average approximation method. In this technique the objective function of the stochastic program is approximated by a sample average estimate derived from a random sample, and then the resulting deterministic program is solved. This process is repeated with different samples to obtain a good candidate solution along with the statistical estimate of its optimality gap. We apply the …
