Wideband Parameter Estimation Of Overhead Transmission Lines From Terminal Measurements, Fahad J. Alqahtani Jun 2023

Wideband Parameter Estimation Of Overhead Transmission Lines From Terminal Measurements, Fahad J. Alqahtani

Dissertations

The accurate and efficient determination of electrical parameters of transmission lines is essential when performing computer-aided analyses of power systems, including power-flow, state estimation, short-circuit, transient stability, power quality, and electromagnetic transients.

In this dissertation, a novel technique for wideband parameter estimation of frequency-dependent single-phase, three-phase transposed, and three-phase untransposed overhead lines, is proposed. The proposed technique utilizes terminal measurements of transient voltages and currents and is based on an analytical approach to solve the frequency domain 2-port nodal model of the line for the series impedance and shunt conductance per unit length as a function of the frequency. The …

Optimized Insulation Design Of Power Transformer Windings Under Fast Voltage Pulses, Juan Manuel Villanueva Ramirez Jun 2021

Optimized Insulation Design Of Power Transformer Windings Under Fast Voltage Pulses, Juan Manuel Villanueva Ramirez

Dissertations

Power transformers are essential electrical power system devices. Using the principle of electromagnetic induction, they can transfer electric energy between two otherwise isolated circuits, as well as reduce or increase voltage levels without modifying the frequency. This allows reduction of power losses when electric energy is transferred between power plants and consumers. Because of their importance and widespread use, transformers failures can have a severe economic impact due to the temporary interruption of electric service.

The insulation design of power transformers is performed by considering the maximum values of voltage or current to which the device will be exposed during …

Solid State Light Conversion, Jumana Turkistani Apr 2018

Solid State Light Conversion, Jumana Turkistani

Honors Theses

Demand for innovative and energy-efficient technology has increased as an environmentally sustainable society has become priority. Technological development of solid-state light plays a part in meeting that demand. Our research has revealed that LED (Light Emitting Diode) lighting uses less energy and is a more cost effective and environmentally responsible choice than incandescent and fluorescent lighting. Converting from incandescent and fluorescent dominated lighting to LED lighting may be cumbersome but can result in a classroom milieu that is attractive, cost/energy effective, easy to manipulate as well as facilitative to learning. For this project, a small-scale mockup of the light fixtures …

Solar Tracking And Lighting Design For A Multimedia Sculpture, Alexandra Ferguson Apr 2016

Solar Tracking And Lighting Design For A Multimedia Sculpture, Alexandra Ferguson

Honors Theses

A lighting system utilizing solar energy was built to illuminate a wireframe multimedia sculpture. Increased power generation from the solar cells was achieved using a solar tracking mechanism. Color-selectable light emitting diodes were used to provide the user with unlimited customization options. A digital control system was designed using an Arduino® microcontroller to configure the color of the lights and the positioning of the solar panel. The sculpture will create a sense of community and sustainability among students at the school.

Hybrid Fuzzy-Pid Controller For Buck-Boost Converter In Solar Energy-Battery Systems, Karime Farhood Hussein May 2015

Hybrid Fuzzy-Pid Controller For Buck-Boost Converter In Solar Energy-Battery Systems, Karime Farhood Hussein

Masters Theses

In the present work, we propose a hybrid fuzzy PID control system to prevent overshoot and oscillations in DC-DC buck-boost converter for solar-battery system. We design and simulate a PID, a Fuzzy logic controller, and hybrid fuzzy PID control system to stabilize the output voltage of the buck-boost converter. The performance results using dynamic response of all of these controllers in terms of rise time, overshoot, peak time, and voltage oscillation are presented. The simulation results support the validity and advantages of the hybrid method.

An Adaptive Kalman Filter For Voltage Sag Detection In Power Systems, Hisham Odeh Alrawashdeh Apr 2014

An Adaptive Kalman Filter For Voltage Sag Detection In Power Systems, Hisham Odeh Alrawashdeh

Dissertations

The exact values of the noise covariance matrix of the Kalman filter state vector Q and the measured signal noise covariance matrix R must be obtained in order to achieve the optimal performance of the Kalman filter. There have been many techniques and assumptions made to evaluate and compute Q and R. The effects of Q and R are investigated in detail in this dissertation. Based on these investigations, the Kalman filter has been modeled to detect the fundamental signal amplitude variations of power system signals. This technique helps in evaluating voltage sags in power systems.

Two algorithms are …
