Efficient Connectivity Management And Path Planning For Iot And Uav Networks, Amirahmad Chapnevis Jan 2024

Efficient Connectivity Management And Path Planning For Iot And Uav Networks, Amirahmad Chapnevis

Theses and Dissertations

This dissertation explores how to better manage resources in mobile networks, especially for enhancing the performance of Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAV)-supported IoT networks. We explored ways to set up a flexible communication architecture that can handle large IoT deployments by making good use of mobile core network resources like bearers and data paths. We developed strategies that meet the needs of IoT networks and enhance network performance. We also developed and tested a system that combines traffic from several mobile devices that use the same user identity and network resources within the core mobile network. We used everyday smartphones, SIM …

Modeling And Mitigating Power Grid Vulnerabilities: A Comprehensive Analysis Of Renewable Energy Integration, Cascading Failures, And Microgrid Resilience, Saikat Das Jan 2024

Modeling And Mitigating Power Grid Vulnerabilities: A Comprehensive Analysis Of Renewable Energy Integration, Cascading Failures, And Microgrid Resilience, Saikat Das

Theses and Dissertations

In modern power systems, rapid integration of renewable energy and the emergence of microgrid technology emphasize the necessity for a comprehensive understanding of vulnerabilities and robust defense mechanisms. The research begins with an exploration of power grid vulnerabilities to cascading failure amidst the increasing integration of renewable energy sources. A novel power balance technique is employed for cascading failure analysis and power grid vulnerability measurement. Simulation results indicate that the growing penetration of renewable energy has a proportionally higher impact on grid vulnerability to cascading failures. After a certain level of renewable energy penetration, some systems may deteriorate rapidly, necessitating …

Synthesis and Application of Redox-Active Covalent Organic Frameworks in Rechargeable Batteries

Mohammad K. Shehab

Department of Chemistry, Virginia Commonwealth University, Richmond, Virginia 23284, United States

Abstract

In recent years, lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) have been considered the dominant energy storage devices for portable electronics and electric vehicles due to their high energy density, low self-discharge rate, and long cycle life. In LIBs, the traditional positive electrodes employed are mainly derived from metal-containing inorganic compounds composed of cobalt, iron, nickel, or manganese (LiCoO2, LiMn2O4, and LiFePO4) coupled with graphite as the negative electrode. Despite …

Smart City Management Using Machine Learning Techniques, Mostafa Zaman Jan 2022

Smart City Management Using Machine Learning Techniques, Mostafa Zaman

Theses and Dissertations

In response to the growing urban population, "smart cities" are designed to improve people's quality of life by implementing cutting-edge technologies. The concept of a "smart city" refers to an effort to enhance a city's residents' economic and environmental well-being via implementing a centralized management system. With the use of sensors and actuators, smart cities can collect massive amounts of data, which can improve people's quality of life and design cities' services. Although smart cities contain vast amounts of data, only a percentage is used due to the noise and variety of the data sources. Information and communication technology (ICT) …

Improving Grid Hosting Capacity And Inertia Response With High Penetration Of Renewable Generation, Hamidreza Sadeghian Jan 2020

Improving Grid Hosting Capacity And Inertia Response With High Penetration Of Renewable Generation, Hamidreza Sadeghian

Theses and Dissertations

To achieve a more sustainable supply of electricity, utilizing renewable energy resources is a promising solution. However, the inclusion of intermittent renewable energy resources in electric power systems, if not appropriately managed and controlled, will raise a new set of technical challenges in both voltage and frequency control and jeopardizes the reliability and stability of the power system, as one of the most critical infrastructures in the today’s world. This dissertation aims to answer how to achieve high penetration of renewable generations in the entire power system without jeopardizing its security and reliability. First, we tackle the data insufficiency in …

Modeling Cascading Failures In Power Systems In The Presence Of Uncertain Wind Generation, Mir Hadi Athari Jan 2019

Modeling Cascading Failures In Power Systems In The Presence Of Uncertain Wind Generation, Mir Hadi Athari

Theses and Dissertations

One of the biggest threats to the power systems as critical infrastructures is large-scale blackouts resulting from cascading failures (CF) in the grid. The ongoing shift in energy portfolio due to ever-increasing penetration of renewable energy sources (RES) may drive the electric grid closer to its operational limits and introduce a large amount of uncertainty coming from their stochastic nature. One worrisome change is the increase in CFs.

The CF simulation models in the literature do not allow consideration of RES penetration in studying the grid vulnerability. In this dissertation, we have developed tools and models to evaluate the impact …

Load Scheduling With Maximum Demand And Time Of Use Pricing For Microgrids, Hayder O. Alwan Jan 2019

Load Scheduling With Maximum Demand And Time Of Use Pricing For Microgrids, Hayder O. Alwan

Theses and Dissertations

Several demand side management (DSM) techniques and algorithms have been used in the literature. These algorithms show that by adopting DSM and Time-of-Use (TOU) price tariffs; electricity cost significantly decreases, and optimal load scheduling is achieved. However, the purpose of the DSM is to not only lower the electricity cost, but also to avoid the peak load even if the electricity prices low. To address this concern, this dissertation starts with a brief literature review on the existing DSM algorithms and schemes. These algorithms can be suitable for Direct Load Control (DLC) schemes, Demand Response (DR), and load scheduling strategies. …

Electric Load Forecasting Using Long Short-Term Memory Algorithm, Tianshu Yang Jan 2019

Electric Load Forecasting Using Long Short-Term Memory Algorithm, Tianshu Yang

Theses and Dissertations

Abstract

Power system load forecasting refers to the study or uses a mathematical method to process

past and future loads systematically, taking into account important system operating

characteristics, capacity expansion decisions, natural conditions, and social impacts, to

meet specific accuracy requirements. Dependence of this, determine the load value at a

specific moment in the future. Improving the level of load forecasting technology is

conducive to the planned power management, which is conducive to rationally arranging

the grid operation mode and unit maintenance plan, and is conducive to formulating

reasonable power supply construction plans and facilitating power improvement, and

improve the …

Fault Classification And Location Identification On Electrical Transmission Network Based On Machine Learning Methods, Vidya Venkatesh Jan 2018

Fault Classification And Location Identification On Electrical Transmission Network Based On Machine Learning Methods, Vidya Venkatesh

Theses and Dissertations

Power transmission network is the most important link in the country’s energy system as they carry large amounts of power at high voltages from generators to substations. Modern power system is a complex network and requires high-speed, precise, and reliable protective system. Faults in power system are unavoidable and overhead transmission line faults are generally higher compare to other major components. They not only affect the reliability of the system but also cause widespread impact on the end users. Additionally, the complexity of protecting transmission line configurations increases with as the configurations get more complex. Therefore, prediction of faults (type …
