Cyber Security Incidents On Critical Infrastructure And Industrial Networks, Robert Ighodaro Ogie Jan 2017

Cyber Security Incidents On Critical Infrastructure And Industrial Networks, Robert Ighodaro Ogie

SMART Infrastructure Facility - Papers

National critical infrastructure and industrial processes are heavily reliant on automation, monitoring and control technologies, including the widely used Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) systems. The growing interconnection of these systems with corporate networks exposes them to cyber attacks, with several security incidents reported over the last few decades. This study provides a classification scheme for categorising security incidents related to critical infrastructure and industrial control systems. The classification scheme is applied to analyse 242 security incidents on critical infrastructure and industrial control networks, which were reported between 1982 and 2014. The results show interesting patterns, with key points …

Impact Of Next Generation Infrastructure On Australian Cities, Joseph J. Branigan, Fariba Ramezani Khansari Jan 2017

Impact Of Next Generation Infrastructure On Australian Cities, Joseph J. Branigan, Fariba Ramezani Khansari

SMART Infrastructure Facility - Papers

The quality of the physical infrastructure in our major cities is just as critical as human capital development in terms of driving long-run growth in productivity and rising living standards. The provision of high-quality and reliable infrastructure network services (like roads, rail and telecommunications) can have significant social, environmental and economic payoffs. Notwithstanding the obvious intuitive connection between infrastructure investment and economic growth, the link between the two is still debated. One reason is that not all infrastructure investment supports growth over the long-term. Building a road or rail line that is not used for instance lowers productivity and economic …

Assessing Infrastructure System Of Systems Integrity, Ricardo Peculis, Farid Shirvani, Pascal Perez Jan 2017

Assessing Infrastructure System Of Systems Integrity, Ricardo Peculis, Farid Shirvani, Pascal Perez

SMART Infrastructure Facility - Papers

Infrastructure refers to the fundamental facilities and systems serving a country, city, or area, including the services and facilities necessary for its economy to function. Infrastructure systems typically consist of interrelated constituent systems forming what is known as system of systems (SoS). Infrastructure systems present numerous challenges throughout their lifecycles. This paper addresses one of these challenges that is presented during operation, when managers need to report 'how well' the system is performing and finding ways to address the consequences of unexpected events that often degrade the intended performance. This state of system 'wellbeing' will be referred as system integrity …

Coping With Social Complexity Of Infrastructure Projects, Ricardo Peculis Jan 2017

Coping With Social Complexity Of Infrastructure Projects, Ricardo Peculis

SMART Infrastructure Facility - Papers

Infrastructure projects are complex and technical complexity is dwarfed when compared with the social complexity caused by the interaction of individuals and organisations that participate and influence these projects. During conception and planning, uncertainty and conflicting motivations influence decisions that drive the solution and plans that are carried out during construction, operation and finally disposal of the system. If the need is not accurately conveyed and the solution is not properly defined, estimated and planned, infrastructure projects become subject of costs overrun and schedule delays of serious consequences, including the possibility that they may not satisfy the real need. Understanding …

Infrastructure System Of Systems Integrity, Ricardo Peculis, Farid Shirvani Jan 2017

Infrastructure System Of Systems Integrity, Ricardo Peculis, Farid Shirvani

SMART Infrastructure Facility - Papers

Infrastructure systems typically consist of technical structures comprising of physical and operational components of interrelated constituent systems forming what is now known as system of systems (SOS). The complexity and uncertainty of unforeseen events that are inherent characteristic of infrastructure systems makes it impossible to predict undesirable emergent behaviours that could push the operation of such systems away from their intended purposes. Infrastructure systems present numerous challenges throughout their lifecycles. This paper addresses one of these challenges that is presented during operation, when managers need to report 'how well' the system is performing and find ways to address the consequences …
