In general, a system S (that may be a company, association, institution, society, country, etc.) is formed by sub-systems Si { or P(S), the powerset of S }, and each sub-system Si is formed by sub-sub-systems Sij { or P(P(S)) = P^2(S) } and so on.

That’s why the n-th PowerSet of a Set S { defined recursively and denoted by P^n(S) = P(P^(n-1)(S) } was introduced, to better describes the organization of people, beings, objects etc. in our real world.

The n-th PowerSet was used in defining the SuperHyperOperation, SuperHyperAxiom, and their corresponding Neutrosophic SuperHyperOperation, Neutrosophic SuperHyperAxiom in order …

Measuring The Perceived Leasing Price Of Empty Container In Shipping System, Hao Hu, Bo Du, Mehrdad Amirghasemi Jan 2019

Measuring The Perceived Leasing Price Of Empty Container In Shipping System, Hao Hu, Bo Du, Mehrdad Amirghasemi

SMART Infrastructure Facility - Papers

The container shipping activity has increased significantly with the growth of world economy and global trade. However, due to the imbalance of global trade, there is always an imbalance between import and export containers, which results in that some ports have a surplus of empty containers while the others have a deficit. At a surplus port, storage cost and repositioning cost for shipping companies increase inevitably; while at a deficit port, shipping companies have to lease or purchase empty containers to meet customers’ demand. Empty container repositioning is one of the most effective ways to solve such imbalance problem, however …

Assessing Infrastructure System Of Systems Integrity, Ricardo Peculis, Farid Shirvani, Pascal Perez

SMART Infrastructure Facility - Papers

Infrastructure refers to the fundamental facilities and systems serving a country, city, or area, including the services and facilities necessary for its economy to function. Infrastructure systems typically consist of interrelated constituent systems forming what is known as system of systems (SoS). Infrastructure systems present numerous challenges throughout their lifecycles. This paper addresses one of these challenges that is presented during operation, when managers need to report 'how well' the system is performing and finding ways to address the consequences of unexpected events that often degrade the intended performance. This state of system 'wellbeing' will be referred as system integrity …

Infrastructure System Of Systems Integrity, Ricardo Peculis, Farid Shirvani

SMART Infrastructure Facility - Papers

Infrastructure systems typically consist of technical structures comprising of physical and operational components of interrelated constituent systems forming what is now known as system of systems (SOS). The complexity and uncertainty of unforeseen events that are inherent characteristic of infrastructure systems makes it impossible to predict undesirable emergent behaviours that could push the operation of such systems away from their intended purposes. Infrastructure systems present numerous challenges throughout their lifecycles. This paper addresses one of these challenges that is presented during operation, when managers need to report 'how well' the system is performing and find ways to address the consequences …

Integrating A Triplet-Triplet Annihilation Up-Conversion System To Enhance Dye-Sensitized Solar Cell Response To Sub-Bandgap Light, Andrew Nattestad, Yuen Yap Cheng, R Macqueen, Gordon G. Wallace, Timothy Schmidt Jan 2014

Integrating A Triplet-Triplet Annihilation Up-Conversion System To Enhance Dye-Sensitized Solar Cell Response To Sub-Bandgap Light, Andrew Nattestad, Yuen Yap Cheng, R Macqueen, Gordon G. Wallace, Timothy Schmidt

Australian Institute for Innovative Materials - Papers

The poor response of dye-sensitized solar cells (DSCs) to red and infrared light is a significant impediment to the realization of higher photocurrents and hence higher efficiencies. Photon up-conversion by way of triplet-triplet annihilation (TTA-UC) is an attractive technique for using these otherwise wasted low energy photons to produce photocurrent, while not interfering with the photoanodic performance in a deleterious manner. Further to this, TTA-UC has a number of features, distinct from other reported photon up-conversion technologies, which renders it particularly suitable for coupling with DSC technology. In this work, a proven high performance TTA-UC system, comprising a palladium porphyrin …

Modelling The Rejection Of N-Nitrosamines By A Spiral-Wound Reverse Osmosis System: Mathematical Model Development And Validation, Takahiro Fujioka, Stuart J. Khan, James A. Mcdonald, Annalie Roux, Yvan Poussade, Jorg E. Drewes, Long D. Nghiem

SMART Infrastructure Facility - Papers

A mathematical model was developed based on the irreversible thermodynamic principle and hydro- dynamic calculation to predict the rejection of N-nitrosamines by spiral-wound reverse osmosis (RO) membrane systems. The developed model is able to accurately describe the rejection of N-nitrosamines under a range of permeate flux and system recovery conditions. The modelled N-nitrosamine rejections were in good agreement with values obtained experimentally using a pilot-scale RO filtration system. Simulation from the model revealed that an increase in permeate flux from10 to 30L/m2h led to an increase in the rejection of low molecular weight N-nitrosamines such as N-nitrosodimethylamine (NDMA) (from31% to …

Australian Institute for Innovative Materials - Papers

In this study we present the synthesis of a new theranostic system consisting of a core-shell structured nanoceramic-drug conjugate that can potentially combine chemotherapeutic, targeting, diagnostic and radio dose enhancing features in cancer treatment. The conjugate is made of α-Bi2O3 nanoparticles (NPs) which were first coated with (3-aminopropyl)trimethoxysilane (APTMS) to form a core-shell structure and then attached with methotrexate (MTX) through amidation between the amine moieties on the shell and the carboxylic acid groups on MTX. While α-Bi2O3 NPs with high effective atomic number can serve as both contrast agent and radiosensitiser in dose enhancement radiation therapy, MTX as an …

Australian Institute for Innovative Materials - Papers

Layered rare earth compounds in the RMn2X2 series (R = rare-earth; X = Ge, Si) are of interest for potential cooling applications at lower temperatures as they enable the structural and magnetic behavior to be controlled via substitution of R, Mn, and X atoms on the 2a, 4d, and 4e sites respectively. We continue investigations of the Pr1−xYxMn2Ge2 magnetic phase diagram as functions of both composition and Mn-Mn spacing using X-ray and neutron diffraction, magnetization and differential scanning calorimetry measurements. Pr1−xYxMn2Ge2 exhibits an extended region of re-entrant ferromagnetism around x ∼ 0.5 with re-entrant ferromagnetism at inline image for Pr0.5Y0.5Mn2Ge2. …

Cost Effectiveness Of Recycling: A Systems Model, David J. Tonjes, Sreekanth Mallikarjun Jan 2013

Cost Effectiveness Of Recycling: A Systems Model, David J. Tonjes, Sreekanth Mallikarjun

Technology & Society Faculty Publications

Financial analytical models of waste management systems have often found that recycling costs exceed direct benefits, and in order to economically justify recycling activities, externalities such as household expenses or environmental impacts must be invoked. Certain more empirically based studies have also found that recycling is more expensive than disposal. Other work, both through models and surveys, have found differently. Here we present an empirical systems model, largely drawn from a suburban Long Island municipality. The model accounts for changes in distribution of effort as recycling tonnages displace disposal tonnages, and the seven different cases examined all show that curbside …

Improved Dehydrogenation Properties Of The Combined Mg(Bh4) 2·6nh3-Nnh3bh3 System, Xiaowei Chen, Feng Yuan, Qinfen Gu, Yingbin Tan, Hua-Kun Liu, S X. Dou, Xuebin Yu Jan 2013

Improved Dehydrogenation Properties Of The Combined Mg(Bh4) 2·6nh3-Nnh3bh3 System, Xiaowei Chen, Feng Yuan, Qinfen Gu, Yingbin Tan, Hua-Kun Liu, S X. Dou, Xuebin Yu

Australian Institute for Innovative Materials - Papers

A combined strategy via mixing Mg(BH4)2·6NH3 with ammonia borane (AB) is employed to improve the dehydrogenation properties of Mg(BH4)2·6NH3. The combined system shows a mutual dehydrogenation improvement in terms of dehydrogenation temperature and hydrogen purity compared to the individual components. A further improved hydrogen liberation from the Mg(BH4)2·6NH3–6AB is achieved with the assistance of ZnCl2, which plays a crucial role in stabilizing the NH3 groups and promoting the recombination of NHδ+⋯HBδ−. Specifically, the Mg(BH4)2·6NH3–6AB/ZnCl2 (with a mole ratio of 1:0.5) composite is shown to release over 7 wt.% high-pure hydrogen (>99 mol%) at 95 °C within 10 min, thereby …

A Novel Multiferroic System: Rare Earth Chromates, Zhenxiang Cheng, Xiaolin Wang, S X. Dou, Hideo Kimura, Kiyoshi Ozawa

Australian Institute for Innovative Materials - Papers

In this work, we report on our studies on the multiferroic properties of two rare earth chromates, GdCrO3 and YCrO3. Polycrystalline bulks and thin films have been fabricated using conventional solid state reaction and pulsed laser deposition. Magnetic measurements have revealed that both compounds show weak ferromagnetism below the antiferromagnetic Neel temperature, TN, of 170 and 140 K for GdCrO3 and YCrO3, respectively. However the well-developed ferroelectric polarization electrical field loop was not successfully measured for both samples due to their low resistance. The high conductivity of the samples at room temperature is related …

A Fiber Bragg Grating Sensor System For Train Axle Counting, Chu-Liang Wei, Chun-Cheung Lai, Shun-Yee Liu, W.H. Chung, T. K. Ho, Hwa-Yaw Tam, S. L. Ho, A. Mccusker, J. Kam, K. Y. Lee

SMART Infrastructure Facility - Papers

Railway signaling facilitates two main functions, namely, train detection and train control, in order to maintain safe separations among the trains. Track circuits are the most commonly used train detection means with the simple open/close circuit principles; and subsequent adoption of axle counters further allows the detection of trains under adverse track conditions. However, with electrification and power electronics traction drive systems, aggravated by the electromagnetic interference in the vicinity of the signaling system, railway engineers often find unstable or even faulty operations of track circuits and axle counting systems, which inevitably jeopardizes the safe operation of trains. A new …

Australian Institute for Innovative Materials - Papers

RFID is taking the world by storm but lowering the price of the tag is a necessity in order to completely replace barcode systems with RFID systems. Researchers around the world have been working on chipless RFID systems. In this paper we present a novel chipless RFID system for barcode replacement. The system can be effectively used in conveyor belt applications. It uses spectral signatures to encoded data and hence provide a unique ID for every tagged object. The chipless tag is fully passive and planar.

A Task Model Of Software Intensive Acquisitions: An Integrated Tactical Avionics System Case Study, Ricardo Peculis, Derek Rogers, Peter Campbell Jan 2007

A Task Model Of Software Intensive Acquisitions: An Integrated Tactical Avionics System Case Study, Ricardo Peculis, Derek Rogers, Peter Campbell

SMART Infrastructure Facility - Papers

The acquisition of complex software intensive systems is fraught with significant risks and often incurs schedule delays, cost overruns and reduced functionality when the product is finally delivered. This paper presents a model to assess the effectiveness of software intensive acquisitions, founded on the premise that the solution depends on a series of transformations that transform input products in one domain into output products in another domain. Transformations are performed by people, and require knowledge and skills pertinent to both input and output domains. Ideally, products should be transformed without distortions resulting into the desirable solution. In reality, distortions occur …
