The paper presents the results of many years of complex research issues related to the emission of fluorine compounds of iron and steel processes. They allowed to examine these processes used in raw materials in terms of the fluorine content and their impact on the amount of emissions of fluorine compounds to the air. Were determined by measuring the levels of concentration in flue gases and stack emissions of fluorine in the form of gaseous and solid compounds, including water-soluble components (considered to be toxic).

English title: Analysis of emission sources of fluorine compounds from the processes of ferrous metallurgy.

The article describes the problem of the presence of sulfur in the blast furnace process and identifies emission sources of sulfur compounds in this process. On the basis of the measurements and calculations, the types and quantities of these compounds emitted to the air were determined. It was found that pig iron smelting in a blast furnace causes emissions of COS, SO2 and H2S. These emissions occur by losses of blast furnace gas (COS and SO2), transport of blast furnace slag inside the furnace hall (SO2) and treatment of the slag by granulation (H2S). However, the most important are only …

The paper presents a review of emissions of main gaseous pollutants (including acidic constituents), some organic compounds (including dioxins and furans), particulates and heavy metals from cement kilns burning waste fuels.

A widely employed method to reduce the cost of cement production is the substitution of traditional fuels used in cement kilns with alternative and waste-derived fuels. Cement industry offers the most acceptable method of waste (especially hazardous waste) thermal treatment and disposal at much lower cost than commercial incinerators. Characteristic for cement kilns high temperatures and long residence time of exhaust gas ensure almost complete destruction of organic compounds …

Conditions occurring in cement rotary kilns assure high destruction and removal efficiency (DRE) of the most stable substances, efficacious dry sorption of acid gases in the alkaline raw meal and heavy metals bounding in the clinker. Adequate operation of hazardous waste incineration in the process connected with cement clinker production does not cause increasing air pollutant emissions. Magnitude of the emissions often does not depend of this if there are using wastes in the cement kiln at all. The work presents a review of DRE levels and stack emissions for selected flue-gas constituents during hazardous waste co-combustion in cement kilns …

A widely employed method of reducing cement production costs is the substitution of traditional fuels with alternative and waste-derived fuels to heat the cement kiln. Cement industry offers the most acceptable method of hazardous waste incineration and co-combustion with significantly lower cost in comparison to incinerators. The high temperatures and long residence times inherent in the operation of cement kilns ensure the almost complete destruction of the organic compounds introduced together with waste fuels. This part of the article presents general characteristic of sort of waste incinerated in cement kilns, way of their charging, advantages and limitations of waste co-combustion …

The paper presents the results of research related to the modeling of physicochemical phenomena occurring in the ground-layer of the atmosphere in terms of ozone formation. For this purpose, the box model was used, in which the computational area is defined as a space designated by a steady surface and a variable height. Conducted in Nowy Sącz (Poland) experiment confirmed the possibility of using this type of model to diagnose and possibly forecasting ozone concentrations in any area of calculation. The study also showed that the quality of the results depends mainly on accuracy in preparing of input data, especially …

Charge-Correlation Effects In Calculations Of Atomic Short-Range Order In Metallic Alloys, F. J. Pinksi, J. B. Staunton, Duane D. Johnson Jun 1998

Charge-Correlation Effects In Calculations Of Atomic Short-Range Order In Metallic Alloys, F. J. Pinksi, J. B. Staunton, Duane D. Johnson

Duane D. Johnson

The “local” chemical environment that surrounds an atom directly influences its electronic charge density. These atomic charge correlations play an important role in describing the Coulomb and total energies for random substitutional alloys. Although the electronic structure may be well represented by a single-site theory, such as the coherent potential approximation, the electrostatic energy is not as well represented when these charge correlations are ignored. For metals, including the average effect from the charge correlation coming from only the nearest-neighbor shell has been shown to be sufficient to determine accurately the energy of formation. In this paper, we incorporate such …

Sediment Control At Water Intakes Along Sand Bed Rivers, Fred L. Ogden May 1998

Sediment Control At Water Intakes Along Sand Bed Rivers, Fred L. Ogden

Fred L. Ogden

Results from five physical hydraulic model studies of riverside water intakes situated along the Missouri River reach between Sioux City, Iowa, and St. Louis, Missouri, are presented. Movable-bed, undistorted Froude-scale models are used to determine the effectiveness of structural modifications in the vicinity of the intake to limit the influx of bed-load sediments. Solutions developed in each case include a series of submerged flow-turning vanes located on the riverward side of the intake. A sediment-barrier wall between the vanes and intake ...

Friction Anisotropy And Asymmetry Of A Compliant Monolayer Induced By A Small Molecular Tilt, Nancy Burnham, M Liley, D. Gourdon, Dimitrios Stamou, U Meseth, T Fischer, C Lautz, H Stahlberg, H Vogel, C Duschl Apr 1998

Friction Anisotropy And Asymmetry Of A Compliant Monolayer Induced By A Small Molecular Tilt, Nancy Burnham, M Liley, D. Gourdon, Dimitrios Stamou, U Meseth, T Fischer, C Lautz, H Stahlberg, H Vogel, C Duschl

Nancy A. Burnham

Lateral force microscopy in the wearless regime was used to study the friction behavior of a lipid monolayer on mica. In the monolayer, condensed domains with long-range orientational order of the lipid molecules were present. The domains revealed unexpectedly strong friction anisotropies and non-negligible friction asymmetries. The angular dependency of these effects correlated well with the tilt direction of the alkyl chains of the monolayer, as determined by electron diffraction and Brewster angle microscopy. The molecular tilt causing these frictional effects was less than 15 degrees, demonstrating that even small molecular tilts can make a major contribution to friction.

Cyclic Deformation Behavior Of High-Purity Titanium Single Crystals: Part Ii. Microstructure And Mechanism, Xiaoli Tan, H. Guo, H. Gu, C. Laird, N. D. H. Monroe Feb 1998

Cyclic Deformation Behavior Of High-Purity Titanium Single Crystals: Part Ii. Microstructure And Mechanism, Xiaoli Tan, H. Guo, H. Gu, C. Laird, N. D. H. Monroe

Xiaoli Tan

Strain-controlled cyclic tests have been conducted on high-purity titanium single crystals with different orientations. The fatigue mechanisms of the titanium crystals were studied by means of a scanning electron microscope (SEM) and a transmission electron microscope (TEM). It was found that single slip lines, wavy slip lines, double slip lines, twins, and associated slip lines occurred in differently oriented single crystals. A new type of fractographic morphology, parallel traces, was observed. Dislocation patterns and cyclic twins, as well as the mechanical response, were analyzed. The dependence of the deformation mechanisms on the orientations of the single crystals is discussed.

Cyclic Deformation Behavior Of High-Purity Titanium Single Crystals: Part I. Orientation Dependence Of Stress-Strain Response, Xiaoli Tan, H. Gu, C. Laird, N. D. H. Monroe Feb 1998

Cyclic Deformation Behavior Of High-Purity Titanium Single Crystals: Part I. Orientation Dependence Of Stress-Strain Response, Xiaoli Tan, H. Gu, C. Laird, N. D. H. Monroe

Xiaoli Tan

Randomly oriented single crystals of high-purity titanium were prepared by strain annealing and were subjected to multiple-step fatigue testing under strain-controlled conditions, in order to determine their cyclic stress-strain curves (CSSCs). These were found to fall into three groups, depending on orientation and the extent of slip and twinning. For those crystals oriented for single prismatic slip, a plateau was observed in the CSSCs, persistent slip bands (PSBs) occurred, and the plateau stress was 38 MPa. In a second group, oriented for prismatic slip but for which cross-slip and twinning was favored, the plateau was suppressed and the flow stresses …
