A Comprehensive Review On Controlling Surface Composition Of Pt-Based Bimetallic Electrocatalysts, Binwei Zhang, Huiling Yang, Yunxiao Wang, Shi Xue Dou, Hua-Kun Liu

Australian Institute for Innovative Materials - Papers

With increasing energy demands worldwide, significant efforts have been made to develop superior electrocatalysts for efficient energy conversion systems. Among all the electrocatalysts exploited, Pt-based bimetallic nanomaterials stand out by virtue of their high catalytic activity and relatively low cost due to the introduction of a nonprecious metal component. It should be noted that electrocatalytic reactions only take place on the surface of catalysts, so investigations of the surface composition of Pt-based bimetallic nanomaterials are necessary for practical electrocatalysts. In this review, recent studies on controlling the surface composition of Pt-based bimetallic catalysts for the oxygen reduction reaction, formic acid …

Presently, lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) are the most promising commercialized electrochemical energy storage systems. Unfortunately, the limited resource of Li results in increasing cost for its scalable application and a general consciousness of the need to find new type of energy storage technologies. Very recently, substantial effort has been invested to sodium-ion batteries (SIBs) due to their effectively unlimited nature of sodium resources. Furthermore, the potential of Li/Li+ is 0.3 V lower than that of Na/Na+, which makes it more effective to limit the electrolyte degradation on the outer surface of the electrode.[1] Nevertheless, one major obstacle for the commercial application …

Review Of Modelling Air Pollution From Traffic At Street-Level - The State Of The Science, Hugh I. Forehead, Nam N. Huynh

SMART Infrastructure Facility - Papers

Traffic emissions are a complex and variable cocktail of toxic chemicals. They are the major source of atmospheric pollution in the parts of cities where people live, commute and work. Reducing exposure requires information about the distribution and nature of emissions. Spatially and temporally detailed data are required, because both the rate of production and the composition of emissions vary significantly with time of day and with local changes in wind, traffic composition and flow. Increasing computer processing power means that models can accept highly detailed inputs of fleet, fuels and road networks. The state of the science models can …

Towards The Right Ordering Of The Sequence Of Models For The Evolution Of A Population Using Agent-Based Simulation, Morgane Dumont, Johan Barthelemy, Nam N. Huynh, Timoteo Carletti

SMART Infrastructure Facility - Papers

Agent based modelling is nowadays widely used in transport and the social science. Forecasting population evolution and analysing the impact of hypothetical policies are often the main goal of these developments. Such models are based on sub-models defining the interactions of agents either with other agents or with their environment. Sometimes, several models represent phenomena arising at the same time in the real life. Hence, the question of the order in which these sub-models need to be applied is very relevant for simulation outcomes. This paper aims to analyse and quantify the impact of the change in the order of …

Metal-Oxygen Bonds: Stabilizing The Intermediate Species Towards Practical Li-Air Batteries, Yuyang Hou, Yuqing Liu, Zhen Zhou, Lili Liu, Haipeng Guo, Hua-Kun Liu, Jiazhao Wang, Jun Chen

Australian Institute for Innovative Materials - Papers

Rechargeable nonaqueous Li-air batteries are attracting much attention due to their far higher theoretical energy density than lithium-ion batteries. However, Li-air batteries suffers from poor round-trip efficiency, low rate capability and poor cycle life. To reduce charge overpotentials by understanding reaction mechanism and to operate in ambient air instead of pure oxygen are prerequisites to realization of practical Li-air batteries. Here, we demonstrate a practical Li-air battery using Mo 2 C/CNT as a potential promoter with high round-trip efficiency (∼80%) and improved cycling performance (40 cycles) because Mo 2 C stabilizes the intermediate species from reduction of both O 2 …

Raman Studies On Silicene And Germanene, Yani Liu, Jincheng Zhuang, Weichang Hao, Yi Du

Australian Institute for Innovative Materials - Papers

Two-dimensional (2D) group IV elemental materials are expected to have similar electronic features to their lightest analogue, graphene. The favorable hybridization state of heavier group IV elements is the sp 3 state, leading to buckled structures instead of a planar one. These buckled structures could modulate the vibrational properties of these 2D materials by introducing a strain effect. In this review, the authors focus on the recent research on the Raman spectra of silicene and Germanene from both the theoretical and experimental sides. The abundant superstructures of silicene and Germanene are formed due to the different interaction strengths between silicene/germanene …

Smart surfaces with tunable wettability have aroused much attention in the past few years. However, to obtain a surface that can reversibly transit between the lotus-leaf-like superhydrophobic isotropic and rice-leaf-like superhydrophobic anisotropic wettings is still a challenge. This paper, by mimicking microstructures on both lotus and rice leaves, reports such a surface that is prepared by creating micro/nanostructured arrays on the shape memory polymer. On the surface, the microstructure shapes can be reversibly changed between the lotus-leaf-like random state and the rice-leaf-like 1D ordered state. Accordingly, repeated switch between the superhydrophobic isotropic and anisotropic wettings can be displayed. Research results …

Australian Institute for Innovative Materials - Papers

Numerous electric and gas utilities are actively pursuing "power-to-gas" technology, which involves using unwanted, excess renewable energy to manufacture hydrogen gas (H 2 ) that is then injected into the existing natural gas pipeline network in 5-10% by volume. This work reports an alkaline fuel cell that has the potential to harness such gas mixtures for downstream generation of electric power. The fuel cell, which employs novel Gortex-based electrodes layered with Pd/Pt catalysts, generates electricity remarkably efficiently when fuelled with methane (CH 4 ) containing 5% hydrogen. Methane constitutes the major component of natural gas. The fuel cell has been …

A new low-cost optimized hydrothermal process of direct synthesis of ZnO nanowires (NWs)/graphene oxide (GO) hybrid on silicon substrates at a low growth temperature (∼60°C) is reported. The careful optimization of the growth conditions and ZnO/GO relative ratios have resulted in high-density ZnO NWs formation with homogenous density and size distributions directly on GO sheets. The fabricated nanocomposites were intensively investigated by employing different structural, optical and electrical characterization techniques such as SEM, EDX, XRD, FTIR, UV-VIS and I-V. SEM analysis showed a formation of highly dense ZnO NWs on GO sheets with homogenous size di stributions with average approximate …

Australian Institute for Innovative Materials - Papers

This work reports a facile glycerol-assisted solvothermal method for synthesizing hierarchical three-dimensional (3D) wool-ball-like zinc oxide (ZnO) nanostructures and their subsequent modifications with multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) as modifiers for achieving sensitive and selective detection of toxic sulfur dioxide (SO2) gas. Structurally, the as-synthesized 3D wool-ball-like ZnO is assembled of two-dimensional (2D) plate-like structures, which themselves are arranged by numerous small nanoparticles. Furthermore, in this work we observed an interesting new phenomenon in which when a high concentration of MWCNTs is introduced, many small nanorods grew on the surface of the plate-like structures which assemble the 3D wool-ball-like ZnO nanostructures. …

Engineering Of Lithium-Metal Anodes Towards A Safe And Stable Battery, Lei Wang, Ziyue Zhou, Xiao Yan, Feng Hou, Lei Wen, Wenbin Luo, Ji Liang, Shi Xue Dou

Australian Institute for Innovative Materials - Papers

Currently, the state-of-the-art lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) are the most widely used energy storage devices and have brought a great impact on our daily life. However, even many strategies have been reported to improve the energy density, these LIBs still can not meet the rapidly growing demand from the many lately emerged devices. During the pursue of higher energy densities, lithium-metal batteries (LMBs) have been the most promising candidates of the next-generation energy storage devices. Unfortunately, the Li-metal anode usually induces severe safety concerns and inferior cycle performance, because of the dendrite growth, high reactivity, and infinite volume changes of Li …

Gradient Chemical Order In The Relaxor Pb(Mg1/3nb2/3)O3, Matthew Cabral, Shujun Zhang, Elizabeth Dickey, James Lebeau Jan 2018

Gradient Chemical Order In The Relaxor Pb(Mg1/3nb2/3)O3, Matthew Cabral, Shujun Zhang, Elizabeth Dickey, James Lebeau

Australian Institute for Innovative Materials - Papers

Here, we apply aberration-corrected scanning transmission electron microscopy to quantify chemical ordering in the relaxor Pb(Mg 1/3 Nb 2/3 )O 3 (PMN). We find that contrary to the prevailing model of a binary distribution of chemically ordered regions within a disordered matrix, the degree of ordering smoothly varies within an ordered domain and approaches a minimum at anti-phase boundaries. These results provide direct insight into the nature of cation ordering in this important prototypical relaxor material.

Australian Institute for Innovative Materials - Papers

Apolipoprotein-E (apoE) is a glycoprotein highly expressed in the brain, where it appears to play a role in lipid transport, β-amyloid clearance, and neuronal signaling. ApoE proteolytic fragments are also present in the brain, but the enzymes responsible for apoE fragmentation are unknown, and the biological activity of specific apoE fragments remains to be determined. Here we utilized SK-N-SH neuroblastoma cells differentiated into neurons with all-trans-retinoic acid (ATRA) to study extracellular apoE proteolysis. ApoE fragments were detectable in culture supernatants after 3 days, and their levels were increased for up to 9 days in the presence of ATRA. The concentration …

Australian Institute for Innovative Materials - Papers

A novel mathematical approach has been developed to complete the inversion of the Biot-Savart law in one- and two-dimensional cases from measurements of the perpendicular component of the magnetic field using the well-developed Magneto-Optical Imaging technique. Our approach, especially in the 2D case, is provided in great detail to allow a straightforward implementation as opposed to those found in the literature. Our new approach also refines our previous results for the 1D case [Johansen et al., Phys. Rev. B 54, 16264 (1996)], and streamlines the method developed by Jooss et al. [Physica C 299, 215 (1998)] deemed as the most …

Graphene-Tailored Thermodynamics And Kinetics To Fabricate Metal Borohydride Nanoparticles With High Purity And Enhanced Reversibility, Hongyu Zhang, Guanglin Xia, Jian Zhang, Dalin Sun, Zaiping Guo, Xuebin Yu

Australian Institute for Innovative Materials - Papers

Due to their ultrahigh theoretical capacity, metal borohydrides are considered to be one of the most promising candidate hydrogen storage materials. Their application still suffers, however, from high operating temperature, sluggish kinetics, and poor reversibility. Designing nanostructures is an effective way of addressing these issues, but seeking suitable approaches remains a big challenge. Here, a space-confined solid-gas reaction to synthesize Mg(BH 4 ) 2 nanoparticles supported on grapheme is reported, which serves as the structural support for the dispersed Mg(BH 4 ) 2 nanoparticles. More notably, density functional theory calculations reveal that graphene could weaken both the MgH bonds of …

Australian Institute for Innovative Materials - Papers

Na2Ti3O7 is considered as a promising anode material for sodium ion batteries (SIBs) due to its excellent high-rate performance compared with hard carbons. However, the electrochemical performance of Na2Ti3O7 is heavily limited by its low electrical conductivity. In this study, we synthesized a series of lanthanide (Ln = La, Ce, Nd, Sm, Gd, Er, and Yb) doped microsized Na2Ti3O7 anode materials and systematically studied the electrochemical performance. Compared with pristine Na2Ti3O7, all the doped samples show superior electrochemical performance. Especially, the Yb3+ doped sample not only delivers a high reversible capacity of 89.4 mA h g−1 at 30C, but also …

Australian Institute for Innovative Materials - Papers

Constructing one-dimensional (1D) hierarchical photocatalysts is deemed to be central to promoting photocatalytic capacity. In this paper, 1D hierarchical structures composed of CdS nanosheets/nanoparticles on Ag nanowires (denoted as 1D Ag@CdS core-shell hierarchical hetero-nanowires) have been fabricated via a wet-chemistry approach at low temperature. The optimization of the synthetic parameters indicates that the amounts of Cd(NO 3 ) 2 ·4H 2 O and thiourea play important roles in the construction of the 1D hierarchical structures. The as-prepared 1D hierarchical Ag@CdS core-shell hetero-nanowires exhibit efficient photocatalytic performance in both methyl orange (MO) degradation (degrade 96% of MO within 240 min) and …

Australian Institute for Innovative Materials - Papers

By a combination of microstructure analysis techniques, we reveal the structural origin of the extremely high supercurrent (up to the practical level of 0.1 MA/cm 2 at 10 T, 4.2 K) in Sr 0.6 K 0.4 Fe 2 As 2 (122) tape. Transmission Kikuchi diffraction analysis reveals that hot pressing promotes a very high fraction of low-angle grain boundaries and texturing of the crystals, which is beneficial for the intergrain physical properties. Moreover, the unique characteristics of low-angle grain boundaries favor both long-range dislocations and short-range dislocations that totally change the pinning mechanism of the bulk 122 system. These defects …

Magnesium Hydride Nanoparticles Self-Assembled On Graphene As Anode Material For High-Performance Lithium-Ion Batteries, Baoping Zhang, Guanglin Xia, Dalin Sun, Fang Fang, Xuebin Yu

Australian Institute for Innovative Materials - Papers

MgH 2 nanoparticles (NPs) uniformly anchored on graphene (GR) are fabricated based on a bottom-up self-assembly strategy as anode materials for lithium-ion batteries (LIBs). Monodisperse MgH 2 NPs with an average particle size of ∼13.8 nm are self-assembled on the flexible GR, forming interleaved MgH 2 /GR (GMH) composite architectures. Such nanoarchitecture could effectively constrain the aggregation of active materials, buffer the strain of volume changes, and facilitate the electron/lithium ion transfer of the whole electrode, leading to a significant enhancement of the lithium storage capacity of the GMH composite. Furthermore, the performances of GMH composite as anode materials for …

Australian Institute for Innovative Materials - Papers

Metal organic framework (MOF)-derived nanoporous carbons (NPCs) have been proposed as promising electrode materials for energy storage and conversion devices. However, MOF-derived NPCs typically suffer from poor electrical conductivity due to the lack of connectivity between these particles and a micropore-dominated storage mechanism, which hinder mass and electron transfer, thereby leading to poor electrochemical performance. In recent years, one-dimensional (1D) MOF-derived carbon nanostructures obtained using an electrospinning method have emerged as promising materials for both electrochemical energy storage (EES) and energy conversion applications. In this mini review, the recent progress in the development of MOF-derived 1D porous or hollow carbon …

Australian Institute for Innovative Materials - Papers

We report a thermally stable high-performance lithium battery using an electrochemically synthesized three-dimensional porous molybdenum disulfide/graphene composite electrode and a phosphonium-based ionic liquid (IL) electrolyte. Benefiting from the structural merits of the chosen electrode and the thermal stability of the electrolyte, the cell coupled with a Li foil exhibits excellent rate performance and cycling capability at room temperature; and that is retained with an even better rate capability at an elevated temperature of 50 8C. This work may provide a new avenue for the development of safe and high performance lithium-ion batteries at high temperature.

Nanoalloys with anisotropic morphologies of branched and porous internal structures show great promise in many applications as high performance materials. Reported synthetic approaches for branched alloy nanostructures are, however, limited by the synthesis using a seed-growth process. Here, we demonstrate a conveniently fast and one-pot solution-phase thermal reduction strategy yielding nanoalloys of Pt with various solute feed ratios, exhibiting hyperbranched morphologies and good dispersity. When Pt was alloyed with transition metals (Ni, Co, Fe), we observed well-defined dendritic nanostructures in PtNi, PtCo and Pt(NiCo), but not in PtFe, Pt(FeNi) or Pt(FeCo) due to the steric hindrance of the trivalent Fe(acac)3precursor …
