Biogenic Synthesis, Photocatalytic, And Photoelectrochemical Performance Of Ag–Zno Nanocomposite, S. A. Ansari, Mohammad Mansoob Khan Dr, M. O. Ansari, J. Lee, M. H. Cho
Dr. Mohammad Mansoob Khan
The development of coupled photoactive materials (metal/semiconductor) has resulted in significant advancements in heterogeneous visible light photocatalysis. This work reports the novel biogenic synthesis of visible light active Ag–ZnO nanocomposite for photocatalysis and photoelectrode using an electrochemically active biofilm (EAB). The results showed that the EAB functioned as a biogenic reducing tool for the reduction of Ag+, thereby eliminating the need for conventional reducing agents. The as-prepared Ag–ZnO nanocomposite was characterized by X-ray diffraction, transmission electron microscopy, diffuse reflectance spectroscopy, photoluminescence spectroscopy, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. The photocatalytic experiments showed that the Ag–ZnO nanocomposite possessed excellent visible light photocatalytic activity …

Giant Interlayer Magnetoresistances And Strong Anisotropy In P-Type Sb2te3 Single Crystals, Zengji Yue, Xiaolin Wang, S Dou
Zengji Yue
Anisotropic interlayer magneto-transport properties have been studied over a broad range of temperatures and magnetic fields in p-type Sb2Te3 single crystals. Giant interlayer magnetoresistance (MR) of up to 400% was observed, which exhibits quadratic field dependences in low fields and becomes linear at high fields without any trend towards saturation. The interlayer MR displays strong anisotropy and is attributable to the anisotropy of the Fermi surface. The observed giant anisotropic interlayer MR could find applications in p-type Sb2Te3 based magneto-electronic devices.

The science and engineering community is limited when it comes to crystal viewing software tools. Each tool lacks in a different area such as customization of structures or visual output. Crystal Viewer 2.0 was created to have all of these features in one program. This one tool simulates virtually any crystal structure with any possible material. The vtkvis widget offers users advanced visual options not seen in any other crystal viewing software. In addition, the powerful engine behind Crystal Viewer 2.0, nanoelectronic modeling 5 or (NEMO5), performs intensive atomic calculations depending on user input. A graphical user interface, or GUI, …

Probabilistic Verification Of Coordinated Multi-Robot Missions, Sagar J. Chaki, Joseph A. Giampapa
Joseph Andrew Giampapa
Robots are increasingly used to perform a wide variety of tasks, especially those involving dangerous or inaccessible locations. As the complexity of such tasks grow, robots are being deployed in teams, with complex coordination schemes aimed at maximizing the chance of mission success. Such teams operate under inherently uncertain conditions -- the robots themselves fail, and have to continuously adapt to changing environmental conditions. A key challenge facing robotic mission designers is therefore to construct a mission -- i.e., specify number and type of robots, number and size of teams, coordination and planning mechanisms etc. -- so as to maximize …

Reflectance difference (RD) spectra for the a–b plane of the single crystals of Gd5Si2Ge2and b–c planes of Gd5Si2Ge2 and Tb5Si2.2Ge1.8 were obtained in the photon energy range of 1.5–5.5 eV. Several peaks were observed for these crystals in the measured spectrum range. Similar features were observed in the RD spectra for the b–c planes ofGd5Si2Ge2 and Tb5Si2.2Ge1.8, while different features were observed for the a–b plane and b–c plane of Gd5Si2Ge2. The RD spectra for the crystals arise not only from the surface anisotropy but also from the bulk anisotropy due to the monoclinic structure of the bulk crystal.

"VNx nanoparticles and nanowires have been prepared by nitrifying V2O5 nanoparticles (NP) and nanowires (NW). The V2O5 NP and NW were synthesized by a facile hydrothermal method. Magnetic susceptibility (chi) and magnetization measurements showed long range superconducting ordering (LRSO) at the temperature of 5.8 K for NW, but there was no observation of LRSO (at least down to 2 K) for the NP sample, which is a much lower temperature than for the corresponding bulk, while both NP and NW showed the absence of long range magnetic ordering, at least down to 2 K. However, the chi data showed that …

In a free viewpoint video system, the scene is captured by a number of cameras and it would be desirable to optimize the configuration of cameras, such as their location or orientation, to improve the rendering quality. This paper introduces a mathematical representation of the multi-camera geometry, called the correspondence field (CF), which can be used to quantify the suitability of a camera configuration for a given arrangement of objects in the scene. The correspondence field describes the spatial topology of the intersecting rays of cameras, arranged as a number of layers or surfaces in the field of view of …

Rapport: Semantic-Sensitive Namespace Management In Large-Scale File Systems, Yu Hua, Hong Jiang, Yifeng Zhu, Dan Feng
Yifeng Zhu
Explosive growth in volume and complexity of data exacerbates the key challenge to effectively and efficiently manage data in a way that fundamentally improves the ease and efficacy of their use. Existing large-scale file systems rely on hierarchically structured namespace that leads to severe performance bottlenecks and renders it impossible to support real-time queries on multi-dimensional attributes. This paper proposes a novel semantic-sensitive scheme, called Rapport, to provide dynamic and adaptive namespace management and support complex queries. The basic idea is to build files’ namespace by utilizing their semantic correlation and exploiting dynamic evolution of attributes to support namespace management. …
A Model For Calculating Acoustic Gravity Wave Energy And Momentum Flux In The Mesosphere From Oh Airglow, Gary R. Swenson, Alan Z. Liu
A Model For Calculating Acoustic Gravity Wave Energy And Momentum Flux In The Mesosphere From Oh Airglow, Gary R. Swenson, Alan Z. Liu
Alan Z Liu
Acoustic gravity and tidal waves propagating in the mesosphere/lower thermosphere (80-110 km) perturb the airglow layer intensities. The OH airglow has recently been modeled to determine the relationship between the relative perturbed atmospheric density and temperature (ρ’/ ρ, T’/T) to the OH intensity ( I’OH/IOH ) at the OH emission altitudes [Swenson and Gardner, 1997]. A model is presented here which relates wave perturbed OH airglow to the wave energy and momentum flux as they propagate through the emission layer. The model is dependent on the wave horizontal and vertical wavelengths (or phase speed as related through the dispersion relationship), …
Approximate Techniques For Dispersive Shock Waves In Nonlinear Media, Timothy R. Marchant, Noel F. Smyth
Approximate Techniques For Dispersive Shock Waves In Nonlinear Media, Timothy R. Marchant, Noel F. Smyth
Tim Marchant
Many optical and other nonlinear media are governed by dispersive, or diffractive, wave equations, for which initial jump discontinuities are resolved into a dispersive shock wave. The dispersive shock wave smooths the initial discontinuity and is a modulated wavetrain consisting of solitary waves at its leading edge and linear waves at its trailing edge. For integrable equations the dispersive shock wave solution can be found using Whitham modulation theory. For nonlinear wave equations which are hyperbolic outside the dispersive shock region, the amplitudes of the solitary waves at the leading edge and the linear waves at the trailing edge of …

Pilot Study Of Greater Boston Drinking Water Quality Changes - Impacts Of Ozonation And Distribution System, Irvine W. Wei, Xin (Cindy) Huang, Windsor Sung
Irvine W. Wei
The Massachusetts Water Resources Authority (MWRA) provides drinking water to 2.2 million people in Greater Boston. To ensure good water quality without filtration, the MWRA is about to replace chlorination with ozonation as the primary disinfection at the new Walnut Hill Water Treatment Plant, scheduled to be on-line in 2005. The objective of this study was to understand the influence of ozonation on monochloramine decay and pH change in the MWRA system. The influence of the distribution system, which consists of old cast-iron pipes, on the ozonated water was also investigated. A pilot plant, including a simulated distribution system with …
Cyclic Heating To Inhibit Bacterial Growth In Activated Carbon Point-Of-Use Treatment Devices, Irwin Silverstein, Irvine W. Wei
Cyclic Heating To Inhibit Bacterial Growth In Activated Carbon Point-Of-Use Treatment Devices, Irwin Silverstein, Irvine W. Wei
Irvine W. Wei
The effectiveness of using heat treatment on a cyclic basis as a means of inhibiting bacterial growth in activated carbon point-of-use treatment devices was examined. Heat treated and non-heat treated devices were compared in a controlled experiment with respect to parameters such as standard plate count, total organic carbon, total residual chlorine and head loss. The results of the study indicated that cyclic heat treatment can inhibit bacterial growth on the surface of granular activated carbon without compromising total organic carbon and total residual chlorine removal efficiencies or accelerating head loss. Microbiological testing verified that the control device had become …

Advanced Chemical Oxidation Of 2,4,6-Trichlorophenol By Using Fenton's Reagent - Dechlorination And Toxicity Reduction, Kuang-Wei (Stone) Chen, Irvine W. Wei
Irvine W. Wei
Chlorinated phenols are priority pollutants, regulated by stringent discharge limits. The presence of chlorine increases the toxicity of these phenolic compounds and decreases their biodegradability. This study is to examine the removal of a priority chlorinated aromatic pollutant, 2,4,6-trichlorophenol (TCP), in aqueous solution by using Fenton's Reagent (a mixture of hydrogen peroxide and fenous iron catalyst), in terms of dechlorination and toxicity reduction. Test results indicate that the higher the molar ratio of H₂O₂ to TCP, the faster the release of chloride from TCP. However, the chloride released in all runs eventually approach the same level of theoretical chloride concentration, …

Current macro- and microfluidic approaches for the isolation of mammalian cells are limited in both efficiency and purity. In order to design a robust platform for the enumeration of a target cell population, high collection efficiencies are required. Additionally, the ability to isolate pure populations with minimal biological perturbation and efficient off-chip recovery will enable subcellular analyses of these cells for applications in personalized medicine. Here, a rational design approach for a simple and efficient device that isolates target cell populations via magnetic tagging is presented. In this work, two magnetophoretic microfluidic device designs are described, with optimized dimensions and …

Oxygen Vacancy Induced Band Gap Narrowing Of Zno Nanostructure By Electrochemically Active Biofilm, Mohammad Mansoob Khan Dr, A. A. Ansari, S. Kalathil, A. Nisar, J. Lee, M. H. Cho
Dr. Mohammad Mansoob Khan
Band gap narrowing is important and advantageous for potential visible light photocatalytic applications involving metal oxide nanostructures. This paper reports simple biogenic approach for the promotion of oxygen vacancies in pure zinc oxide (p-ZnO) nanostructures using an electrochemically active biofilm (EAB), which is different from traditional techniques for narrowing the band gap of nanomaterials. The novel protocol improved the visible photocatalytic activity of modified ZnO (m-ZnO) nanostructures through the promotion of oxygen vacancies, which resulted in band gap narrowing of the ZnO nanostructure (Eg = 3.05 eV) without dopants. X-ray diffraction, UV-visible diffuse reflectance spectroscopy, x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, electron paramagnetic …
