MgB2 /Fe wires with 10 at. % excess Mg produced by in situ powder-in-tube processing werecompared to normal stoichiometric MgB2 /Fe wires prepared by the same method. It was found thatthe critical current density Jc and the irreversibility field (Hirr) were significantly enhanced forMgB2 /Fe wires with excess Mg. The transport Jc for 10 at. % Mg excess samples sintered at 800 degrees C, measured at a field of up to 14 T, increased by a factor of 2 compared to that for the normal MgB2 wires. The best Jc results for the 10 at. % Mg excess sample were …

Oxygen-free pyrene gas as a carbon (C) dopant was delinked and incorporated into highly dense MgB2 structure via a gas phase diffusion method. The technique offers the advantages that molecular C is homogeneously distributed into MgB2 and substituted at the boron sites without any severe deterioration of grain connectivity. The C substitution causes a significant shrinkage of the a-lattice parameter and an increase in the lattice strain, resulting in high disorder. The introduction of structural disorder as a result of C doping leads to a considerable enhancement of the in-field critical current density (Jc) and upper critical field.

Different types of superconductors have been investigated at small magnetic fields (Ba) over wide temperature (T) ranges at different Ba orientations. It has been shown that the temperature dependence of the characteristic field (B*), separating the Ba-independent critical current density (Jc) plateau (single vortex pinning regime) and the region with Jc(Ba) (collective pinning), can be attributed either to the temperature dependence of the magnetic penetration depth for Nb-film and MgB2bulk superconductors, or to thermally activated processes for Bi-based superconductors and YBa2Cu3O7−δ superconducting films. In both cases the vortex pinning influence appears to have a secondary role, affecting the effective vortex …

We report for the first time the Al and C codoping effect on the structures and superconductivity in MgB2. It was found that both the lattice parameters and the Tc decreased monotonically with increasing doping level of both Al and C. The Tc dropped to 27.5 and 7 K for x=0.2 and for x =0.4, respectively. The reduction of Tc for the codoping was found to be quicker than for individual Al doping and slower than for individual C doping at the same doping levels. First-principles calculations indicated that the observed decrease in Tc …

Correlation Between Doping Induced Disorder And Superconducting Properties In Carbohydrate Doped Mgb2, Jung Ho Kim, S X. Dou, Sangjun Oh, M Jercinovic, E Babic, T Nakane, Hiroaki Kumakura

Shi Xue Dou

A comprehensive study of the effects of carbohydrate doping on the superconductivity of MgB2 has been conducted. In accordance with the dual reaction model, more carbon substitution is achieved at lower sintering temperature. As the sintering temperature is lowered, lattice disorder is increased. Disorder is an important factor determining the transition temperature for the samples studied in this work, as evidenced from the correlations among the lattice strain, the resistivity, and the transition temperature. It is further shown that the increased critical current density in the high field region can be understood by a recently-proposed percolation model [M. Eisterer et …

Influence Of The Iron Sheath On The Local Supercurrent Distribution In Mgb2 Wires, Marie Roussel, Alexey V. Pan, Sihai Zhou, S X. Dou

Shi Xue Dou

The magnetic behavior of iron sheathed magnesium diboride (MgB2) wires was investigated. Global magnetization measurements have shown unusual critical current density variations compare to a superconductor with no magnetic environment. Local quantitative studies, through MO images, are linked to these global magnetization measurements in order to better understand the observed results. It is shown that the current distribution is affected by the soft magnetic sheath interacting with the superconducting core.

The effect of carbohydrate doping on lattice parameters, microstructure, Tc, Jc, Hirr, and Hc2 of MgB2 has been studied. In this work the authors used malic acid as an example of carbohydrates as an additive to MgB2. The advantages of carbohydrate doping include homogeneous mixing of precursor powders, avoidance of expansive nanoadditives, production of highly reactive C, and significant enhancement in Jc, Hirr, and Hc2 of MgB2, compared to undoped samples. The Jc for MgB2+30 wt% C4H6O5 sample was increased by a factor of 21 at 5 K and 8 T without degradation of self-field Jc.

Time-resolved magneto-optical studies are performed on MgB2 thin film samples grown by in situ pulsed laser deposition and in situ reactive deposition technique. The latter reveal dendritic avalanche-free flux penetration. The kinetic roughening of magnetic flux penetration is studied for applied ac current. Dynamic scaling laws determined for both static field and ac current are consistent with the directed percolation depinning model, placing the vortex dynamics in MgB2 in the same universality class as YBCO and Nb.

In this work, the authors report on significant flux pinning enhancement in MgB2 that has been easily obtained using a liquid additive, silicon oil. MgB2 bulk samples with 0 up to 30 wt % silicon oil added were prepared by an in situ reaction. Results showed that the Si and C released from the decomposition of the silicon oil formed Mg2Si and substituted into B sites, respectively. Increasing the amount of the Si oil up to 15 wt % has resulted in the reduction of the lattice parameters, as well as Tc and R(300 K)/R(Tc) values, accompanied by a significant …

We present the following results. (1) We introduce a doping source for MgB2, liquid SiCl4, which is free of C, to significantly enhance the irreversibility field (Hirr), the upper critical field (Hc2), and the critical current density (Jc) with a little reduction in the critical temperature (Tc). (2) Although Si can not be incorporated into the crystal lattice, a significant reduction in the a-axis lattice parameter was found, to the same extent as for carbon doping. (3) Based on the first-principles calculation, it is found that it is reliable to estimate the C concentration just from the reduction in the …

First, by using of the conventional Rowell analysis, we demonstrated that the addition of nano BN particles can effectively eliminate MgO and pores in MgB2 resulting in a very high density and good connectivity of BN-doped MgB2. Then, another method—low-frequency dielectric impedance analysis—was introduced to characterize the properties of the grain boundaries of MgB2. A comparative impedance study was performed in the frequency range from 100 Hz to 100 MHz on pure and nano BN-doped MgB2. The study revealed some following interesting results: (1) a dielectric resonance around frequency of 108 in both samples was observed, which was argued to …

The transport and magnetic properties of 10 wt % malic acid and 5 wt % nanocarbon doped MgB2 have been studied by measuring the resistivity (p), critical current density (jc), connectivity factor (AF), irreversibility field (Hirr), and upper critical field (Hc2). The pinning mechanisms are studied in terms of the collective pinning model. It was found that both mean free path (δl) and critical temperature (δTc) pinning mechanisms coexist in both doped MgB2. For both the malic acid and nanocarbon doped samples, the temperature dependence of the crossover field, which separates the single vortex and the small bundle pinning regime, …

Flux-Pinning Mechanism In Silicone-Oil Doped Mgb2: Evidence For Charge-Carrier Mean Free Path Fluctuation Pinning, Shaban R. Ghorbani, Xiaolin Wang, S X. Dou, Sung-Ik Lee, Md S. Hossain

Flux-pinning mechanism of MgB2 doped with 10 wt % silicone-oil sintered at low and high temperatures has been investigated by magnetic measurements. The field dependence of the critical current density, jc(B), was analysed within the collective pinning model. A crossover field, Bsb, from the single vortex to the small vortex bundle-pinning regime was observed. For both types of sintered samples, the temperature dependence of Bsb(T) at low temperature is in good agreement with the δl pinning mechanism, i.e., pinning associated with charge-carrier mean free path fluctuation. At temperatures close to the critical temperature, however, there is evidence for δTc pinning, …

We investigated on microstructure and superconducting properties of high-density MgB2superconductors synthesized by a heat-treatment method combining a short period of sintering at 1100°C with a following annealing at a low temperature. The two-step sintering method was found to achieve a coexistence of a high density and broadened XRD full width at half maximum (FWHM) of MgB2 peak in the samples. The onset of diamagnetism at 5 T was approximately 2 K higher than those of the samples heat-treated by single-step sintering at high or low temperatures. Different second-step annealing temperatures were examined in this work. …

The results from magnetotransport and magnetization of nanodiamond doped MgB2-nDx are reported. Superconducting transition temperature (Tc) is not affected significantly by x up to x =0.05 and latter decreases slightly for higher x>0.05. R(T) vs H measurements show higher Tc values under same applied magnetic fields for the nanodiamond added samples, resulting in higher estimated Hc2 values. From the magnetization measurements, it was found that irreversibility field value Hirr for the pristine sample is 7.5 T at 4 K and the same is increased to 13.5 T for 3 wt % …

Magnesium diboride (MgB2) has a transition temperature (Tc) of ~40 K, i.e., about 4 times as high as that of niobium (Nb).We have been evaluating MgB2 as a candidate material for radio-frequency (RF) cavities for future particle accelerators. Studies in the last 3 years have shown that it could have about one order of magnitude less RF surface resistance (Rs) than Nb at 4 K. A power dependence test using a 6 GHz TE011 mode cavity has shown little power dependence up to ~12 mT (120 Oe), limited by available power, compared …
