The report evaluates the fire protection features of a K-12 classroom building (Bldg. B) in San Bernardino County, California. Bldg. B is a two-story Type V-A light timber frame construction. At the time of this report’s composition, Bldg. B is undergoing modernization construction. The fire protection analysis of this building consists of prescriptive and performance portions.

The prescriptive analysis verifies the compliance of building egress, passive, and active protection features with the 2019 edition of California Codes of Regulations Title 24 (Title 24) and Title 24-adopted National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) standards. This Fire Hazards Analysis (FHA) was written using modern fire protection engineering principles to characterize the Applied Chemistry Management and Enrichment (ACME) Building at the Pacific Northwest National Research Area (PNNRA) using both a prescriptive-based and performance-based analysis to ensure the building and occupants can be safe in fire conditions. Recommendations are made as part of this analysis to improve the survivability of this structure if a fire were to occur.

This building was found to be compliant with the prescriptive code requirements from the 2018 International Building Code except for a few minor issues that are currently being repaired. …

The purpose of this project was to analyze and compare the existing fire protection systems in “LA UNIVERSAL” building to current applicable codes and standards. Both prescriptive based analysis and performance-based analyses were performed.

The prescriptive based analyses included analyzing the structural fire protection, fire suppression, fire alarm, and egress systems. There are many fire protection features that do not meet the requirements established by the NFPA standards. This report analyzes the impact of a fire located in the atrium at the Air National Guard Readiness Center (ANGRC) located at Joint Base Andrews, Maryland. The fifth floor is an enclosed penthouse used to enclose mechanical and electrical equipment. International Building Code (IBC) 2006 and 2005, section 506.1, excludes elevator penthouses of this type from the height and area calculations. The four occupied floors are used for office areas with the three- story atrium opening onto the balcony of the second- and the third-floor office area, and the second-floor conference center.

Fire Protection Engineering: Culminating Experience Project Reports

This report analyzes the fire protection features of the Warren J. Baker Center for Science and Mathematics on the Cal Poly San Luis Obispo campus in San Luis Obispo, CA. The prescriptive analysis of the structural fire protection, egress, fire suppression, and fire alarm, detection, and communication systems shows that the building meets the requirements of current codes and standards. The performance based analysis includes simulating design fire scenarios in the atrium using computer modeling (CFAST, FDS) and the results of these models show that the atrium meets the tenability criterion for the calculated evacuation time of occupants.
