The Effect Of Streamwise Vortices On The Frost Growth Rate In Developing Laminar Channel Flows, Brian Storey, Anthony Jacobi

An experimental study is presented to assess the influence of streamwise vortices on frost growth in a steady, developing, laminar channel flow. Using a simple model and scale analysis, frost growth rate (ablimation) data are normalized with respect to temperature, humidity and time. Measurements from baseline experiments in a rectangular channel are found to be accurately correlated using the proposed scaling relation. Upon introducing streamwise vortices in the channel flow, frost growth still follows the scaling relation, but local growth rates were observed to increase by more than 7% in regions where the streamwise vortices induce a surface-normal flow toward …

Electroplated Ni/Au over Cu is a popular metallization for printed circuit board finish as well as for component leads, especially wire-bondable high-frequency packages, where the gold thickness requirement for wire bonding is high. The general understanding is that less than 3 wt% of Au is acceptable in SnPb solder joints. However, little is known about the effect of Au content on the reliability of SnAgCu solder joints. In April 2010, the New York Times reported that Vattenfall AB, an energy company owned by the Swedish government, had built one of the first coal-fired power plants designed to capture ~90% of the CO2 it produced, with plans to sequester that CO2 underground in geologic repositories near its plant in Brandenburg, Germany (Voosen, 2010). By most measures, if the plant's operations were proven to be successful, it could have served as a model for other carbon capture and sequestration plants worldwide.

Rapid prototyping techniques for CNC machining have been developed in an effort to produce functional prototypes in appropriate materials. One of the major challenges for rapid machining is to develop an automatic fixturing system for securing the part during the machining process. The method proposed in this paper is the use of sacrificial fixturing, similar to the support structures in existing rapid processes like Stereolithography. Project work is increasingly used to help engineering students integrate, apply and expand on knowledge gained from theoretical classes in their curriculum and expose students to `real world' tasks. To help facilitate this process, the department of Design, Manufacture and Engineering Management at the University of Strathclyde has developed a web-based groupware product called LauLima to help students store, share, structure and apply information when they are working in design teams. Insisting On Truth At The Expense Of Conceptualization: Can Engineering Portfolios Help?, Ozgur Eris

Teaching and promoting conceptual thinking in engineering education is challenging. Two recently introduced design thinking models are compared in order to explore the reasons behind this challenge. The comparison results in key distinctions between divergent and convergent thinking, and between concept and knowledge domains. The differentiating principle is shown to be a common principle of the two models, truth-value, or logical status, of the propositions that engineers make. Building on this insight, divergent thinking by inquiry is identified as a mechanism for promoting conceptual thinking, and a specific implementation of engineering portfolios is proposed as a pedagogical tool.
